Is it better to eat when you're hungry? or when it's time to eat?

I am confused over something today. It seems my idle time has caught up with me. It's lunch time now but I don't feel like eating yet. I'm not really hungry, neither am I full.
Are there scientific studies which prefers eating when hungry rather than eating because it's time to eat?
How do you do it? Do you eat because you are hungry? or do you eat because it's time to eat?
Which do you think I should do? hehe..

It is always good to eat when you are hungry rather than setting a perfect time frame for each time you eat. It is good if you eat when you are hungry, that too in a systematic manner. For instance, most food items take some 4 to 5 hours to digest (Fruits, juices, bread etc take much lesser time though - when taken in less quantity). So you can maintain a time and still eat only when you are hungry by doing it regularly. I always suggest to eat when you are hungry.

If you are going to eat when you're hungry then you'd tend to eat a lot more. Why? because as you said it takes 4-5hours for the stomach to digest. Therefore, it would also take a lot before you realize you're full. :) By the time your realize you're already full, you have overeaten.

No, its not what I meant, 4-6 hours means - you can set a time table and stick to it.. and still manage to eat only when you are hungry. Also, you can eat a lot more when you are really hungry, our capacity is restricted when we are not hungry as some space is occupied by the half digested food.It is not because we realize it late that we can eat more, but we can eat more. Also the time required for complete digestion and induce hunger will decrease if your stomach was empty when you had your food.

Generally I think it's best to eat when you are hungry, this is your stomach actually giving you a physical message saying something along the lines of "Hey, amigo! rub a dub dub, it's time for some grub, give me some food!" I think for the majority of people though it's a built in habit to eat at the proper meal times whether it be breakfast or dinner!
Aside from the main meals there's always the snacking aspect and that is quite difficult to turn away from. I'm trying to lose some exercise around my waist so I'm trying to cycle as much as possible on a daily basis and this definitely keeps the hunger at bay. I'm trying to have smaller portions at meal times now as well, I think this is important rather than filling a dinner plate to capacity. Andrew

I eat when it's time to eat and when I'm hungry. the problem is, I would gain weight in no time! So what I do is still eat 3-6 times a day but in smaller portions and I drink lots of water.

I tend to eat only when I am hungry, and even then, just eat enough to fill me up. My sister used to get so annoyed with me, she would eat at the right time and everything in front of her.
Some-days I may not eat hardly anything at all, others I might eat several meals or just 'pig out' on cakes and biscuits.
I have learned over the years that your body tells you when to eat and to some extent what to eat. I never ignore this.
When working, my times are set, but no one worries if you sneak a peppermint during breaks.
My advice, listen to your gut, and you won't go far wrong.

I say eat when you are hungry, not because the clock tells you it's time. It's important to get the proper nutrition so if you are not hungry when mealtime comes perhaps a glass of milk or something small would be the best for you.
I find to lose a couple of pounds after I have gained, I have to put up with some hunger. Milk is helpful for hunger pains too.

In general I am of the opinion that you should eat when you're hungry.Yet must follow certain rules.I understand that you are hungry at any time you are eating something.Yes sometimes to me so.But I try to refrain because it is not very useful.

Lucky is the one who can eat when hunger demands it but in a home this is not possible as if everyone walked in and ate while they were hungry what would be the plight of the one who manages the food but as I am putting down these thoughts because of the microwave era it just occurred to me perhaps it will not be much of a problem but eating together keeps a family together.

When at home during week-ends, i would usually eat when i am already hungry. I would finish first what i am doing , rest , and eat when i am already hungry.
But when i am at the office, i have to eat during lunch breaks because the next break will be in mid afternoon. I would already be too hungry when that time comes.
Although, sometimes during lunch break when i am still too full to eat already, i would just eat a little and the rest, i will eat during our snack time.

I think that it is better to eat when it's time to eat, unless you're already hungry by that time, or you think you're still full.

Our body has its own clock or scheduler, that is the reason why we get hungry at 12 noon and sleep and wake up at roughly the same time each day. sometimes this body clock gets messed up. If you no longer feel hungry at lunchtime then that would be okay if you are not employed. but if you work in an office where the only alotted time for eating lunch is around 12 noon, then thats the problem. just continue eating at your normal lunch time even if you are not hungry, soon your biorythm will go back to normal.

I don't think that there's a specific time when you have to eat. The time we eat depends on when we get hungry. For a lot of people dinner may be at 7pm or something, but for me and my family it's around 5-6 pm. The time we choose to eat depends on when we're hungry.

there are only two things that comes unto my mind.....
Dinner and Supper..... their difference....
do you want to know?
Dinner:
if you go outside and in the city and eat foods that are served in the fast food chains....
Supper:
if you served foods that are cooked by your mom or parents.....

This question or rather problem might crop up when one does not have food at fixed hours of the day. Also, if you have inadequate food, or overeat, you find feel hungry when its time for food. If everything is perfectly balanced, you automatically feel hungry st the right time, which you have already defined as the time for your food. This will also help in keeping your metabolic rates normal, and you stay healthy.

Hi laydee
Long time no see, but of course that is my fault.
I have always heard that you need to eat breakfast lunch dinner and small snacks inbetween them those meals. This suspose to keep you from being hungry. So I guess you should eat anyways. As for me I have the other problem. I want to eat all day long when Im bored or being in a lazy mode..LOL
Cute discussion and have a great day. Keep smiling.

Hi laydee: In my case I prefer toe at when it's time to do it because if I eat whenever I want I'll be really, really fat. I feel the need toe at specially when I don't have anything else to do or when I am feeling worried about something.

Actually i no nothing about such scientific studies. According to me, eat when you are hungry..... I know eating nothing wen u r hungry creates stomach as well as intestinal problems. But if u don't take food at the time to eat, i presume there wont be any problems as you have already eaten.... I eat when I am hungry. I won't consider the time. And eating too much may lead to obesity.....hahaha

I usually eat the normal meals on time, but I eat snacks when im hungry. Eating snacks is bad. Especially since i eat chips and sweets. These are not very healthy.
