I usually take a shower at night due to the hot summer season in our place. This way, I can somehow comfortably get myself to sleep. One time, my mother-in-law reminded me to first let my hair dry before going to sleep. She said its bad for the health if I do sleep while it's still wet, I may go blind or worst, never woke up at all.... This makes me feel scared so I do follow her advice, I make sure that my hair's all dry before going to bed. But on the back of my mind, I have some questions. Is it really bad for the health? are there scientific explanation about this?

No it isn't bad for your health. There is no scientific basis that you get blind sleeping with a wet hair. If you do, you only would get a wet pillow and a funky hair- do the following day. So there is no reason to be alarmed by this.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts sweet_pea! I never sleep with my hair wet anyway, and if I did, its only accidental; falling asleep while waiting for my hair to dry

hello wheng, I also have this kind of thinking before since my grandma always tells me not to sleep while hair still wet. But as i grow up i've learned that there is not scientific evident that sleeping with wet hair can make us blind of can kill us (hehehe) I always have my bath before sleeping due to this hot weather, and of course, usually fall into sleep with wet hair. And nothing serious happens to me ...so far. have a great day

Hi! jaiho, Yeah, I experienced that too, falling asleep while waiting for my hair to dry. So in order to make it more quicker, I used electric fan. Anyway, maybe our oldies are just concerned about us so they pass on whatever they believed is goodfor us

Me too, I often take a short bath every night before I sleep but sometimes to avoid sleeping with my hair still wet, what I am doing is I'm just washing all my body except my hair. That way, I feel fresh and I can also sleep right away, without waiting my hair to get dry. I have also tried to sleep with my hair still wet and the result was I had a headache when I woke up. That's why I also believe that sleeping while your hair still wet is really not advisable. Have a nice day!

I'm not comfortable leaving my head dry when I take a shower because I feel the heat of my body goes up to my head.....it's still much better to include your head, that way you will feel more refreshed

That one is an old tale. It's not true and has no scientific basis on it. But i don't go to sleep with wet hair though. My hair will have ugly bends when i do that. So, whenever i take a bath before sleeping i would have it dried with an electric fan. That way, i can be sure that i will have a straighter and well kept hair in the morning .

When I was akid, I was also told by my mom and aunt not to sleep with your hair wet. Yes it might be an old tale that you can go blind. But there is nothing wrong if we just follow what they say. It won't harm us. An old folktale or whatever for as long as I don't get blind is fine with me.

In this age of advance technologies, medical myths and misconceptions still abound and endure, Dr. Protacio explains that sleeping with wet hair results to blindness is false belief. Modern Filipinos may not longer believe in such medical folklore but a big number still do. When I was a child, I always heard that statement from my gradma also nothing to lose if we follow them. But if we think it over, maybe they are implying that when our hair is wet and we sleep on it, the heat that comes from our body absorbs by the eyes so resulted to blindness. This is just my opinion.

Yeah, I think what you've said is true, there's nothing to loose if we follow our oldies beliefs. They remind us because they're just concern about us

My grandmother has the same warnings for me. She tells me that I might go crazy if I sleep while my hair is wet. I don't really believe it, but I don't know if there's a rationale behind it.

Dear friend, I do have short hair and mostly after bath I just make my hair dry. At times it is too hot so I just keep my head cool without drying it. But never had slept with my hairs wet.

As for me I sometimes fell asleep while waiting my hair to dry so what I do now is to use an electric fan so my hair will dry quickly

im not sure. my mom always said it makes your hair sparse and not good for the hair. also, in winter or if the air conditioning is on it can give you a bad cold. even in summer probably dont hurt to either wait till it dries or blow it out.

I have gone to sleep many times with my hair wet, especially when I was younger, so I can attest that this is completely false. Just think of it. How would your wet hair do anything adverse to your health? Make you blind or kill you? Really? No. The worst this can do is make your hair kinda wavy and make your pillow wet.

I heard about that words, friend. They say that when it is bad to sleep with wet hair. I don't if there is a scientific explanation about it but I feel pain in my head when I wake up... so I need to make dry first my hair before going to sleep

I try not to sleep with wet hair. If I do it will be a mess in the morning. I don't think it can affect your health though. It used to be really long and I would wash & set it at night. It would take all night for it to dry, so I used to sleep with it wet all the time. Now that it is shorter, I wait for it to dry.

I don't know whether it will cause an effect to your health. Most of the time I sleep with my hair dry rather than let it wet and sleep. But tell you what? I feel really cool and easy to fall asleep with my hair wet but I don't like to let it wet when I sleep cause it will make my pillow wet wet as well and make sure you rpillow dry after that or it will give a smell to it.

I don't think so. I do it especially now that the weather is really hot. If you are really afraid, you can just dry it before going to sleep. I don't see any explanation why it is bad to sleep while your hair is wet.

hmmm ........ maybe just because if we sleep in a state of wet hair, can make our hair bad smell the next morning, and maybe can also make our hair becomes thinner or branched and having hair loss.

If I have taken a bath before going to sleep, I make sure that my hair are not wet. I make my hair dry and then go to sleep. It is not good for us to sleep with wet hair and this could be injurious to our health.

This is just an old wives' tale! I could not count on my hands and feet how many times I went to bed with a wet head in curlers when I was young and at home! It isn't going to make you blind or kill you or endanger your health.

I highly doubt it, I'm no expert, but I've never heard of this. This reminds me of parents saying "don't sit to close to the television or you'll go blind" this is a false statement I think everybody should know. Growing up this was what I considered the truth and was also fearful to do this. Another is "washing your hair and going outside, you'll catch a cold" I've seen a number of people oppose my race doing this. My co worker actually did this today. Never understood why, but it is what it is. So the answer to you question I would have to say thats false. Maybe your mother-in-law grew up thinking the same thing as well, but never looked for the truth? Because this just sounds unreasonable to me.

there's nothing really wrong with sleeping with your hair wet. i guess the only bad thing about it is that you'll get a wet pillow which is not comfortable at all.. LOL.. anyway,i do sleep with my hair wet sometimes and nothing's really going on. i've asked the same question with my mentors in med school and they say there's no scientific basis on going blind or never waking up again after sleeping with a wet hair.
