I understand that everything changes daily, but this one baffles me!!!
It has been determined by the "so-called" experts that we are INSULTING & DEGRADING our animals when we refer to them as "pets". I don't know about you, but I feel "pet" is a term of ENDEARMENT (much like Sweetheart or Honey)!!! We are to NO longer call ourselves "owners" as that means our animals are our "possessions". That one makes a little bit of sense to me, but I most definitely DON'T treat my furbabies like a possession!!!!
So, now, let's make this a discussion...
After reading what the experts think, what do you think???

I've ALWAYS wanted to come back as my friend's pet. She cooks her dog steak & feeds her children bologna sandwiches. Now that you've mentioned it, I think coming back as a dimwitted researcher might not be a bad job!!!!

It has been my experience that most people treat their furbabies BETTER than they treat their children!!! I really do NOT understand how the word "pet" is degrading???

Those are not "experts", they are nuts with an agenda.
I have always been taught, since I was very small, to allow animals dignity and to treat them as I would treat a friend. My family did not teach animals tricks but rather gave them jobs to do, such as fetching wood or herding cattle to give them purpose and pride.
The Bible says men were given authority over the animals of the earth. That's because man was the one with the biggest brain and, presumably, the most compassion. Unfortunately, that may have been true thousands of years ago but men have become so perverted that it is no longer true and many time the animals are the better creature.
These people in that article need to get a life. How about them going to a shelter and adopting or taking an active role in stomping out animal cruelty or working to make cruelty to animals punishable by actual prison time? People like that are wasting our oxygen.

Everybody in the vicinity wishes that they came to our house as a pet in their next life. My pet is the most important part of our life. Everyone bothers about her when she does not eat, or sulks or sleeps for long hours. There cannot be a better companion than a well behaved pet.

What a BEAUTIFUL baby you have there!!! I can understand why everyone wants to come back as your pet!!! I have a friend like that. She feeds her children bologna sandwiches as she cooks her dog a steak. I'm always telling her that if I can't come back as one of her pets, I want to be invited to have dinner with her dog...NOT her kids!!!!

Not many know what pets can do to bring happiness in their life. You are cordially invited to have a meal with Preiti. She too has pressure cooked chicken legs, cut into tiny pieces, chicken soup, rice and that is her afternoon meal which she eats in small portions right through the night. Then she has pedigree, and a bowl of milk. Her favourite is her biscuits.
We always had a craze for pedigree but then I vouched that I would go for a stray and after our experience with pedigree - we had a dalmatian, an alsatian, and a bull terrier, and a couple of mixed breeds, this little one literally walked into our life when she was may be a month old. She is 4 years old now.

many years ago i was told by my mother to take our dog,old yella, after many years of loyalty to the vet to be put down.
when i got there i told the vet to put down the dog. so he looked at old yella and said "you are a flea ridden mangy son of a b!tch!" to this day it remains the finest piece of putdownmanship i have ever heard.
old yella lived another seven happy years but he never liked going back to the vet after that.

Some people have too much time on their hands, and not enough brains in their head!
They've said this before, we are to call our dogs "Canine Companions", what utter nonsense. Not only is such drivel insulting to the owners, (yes. I went there :) ), but to the pets, (Man, I'm a potty mouth today :) ), themselves.
Such EXPERTS, obviously do not understand the deep emotions that people invest in their pets, and vice - versa.
Take no notice of them, they'll soon go away :)

WELCOME TO MYLOT!!!
Actually, I would be insulted that my pet is insulted; but I'm sure the "expert" would NOT care!!! My 5 babies have a WONDERFUL home!!! They NEVER go hungry. They NEVER go thirsty. My 2 cats & 1 of the dogs sleeps in my home. The other 2 dogs prefer to be outside, so I built them their own home!!! They have a small condo in my back yard. My yard is fenced so they can run & play ALL day without fear of being hit by a car or captured by the dog warden & put in the pound. Several of my neighbors have requested to come back as one of my pets!!!

What a lot of rubbish. I hope that no taxes have been spent "researching" this rubbish. I absolutely agree with you that the word "pet" is a term of endearment. Who exactly will be offended by the terminology? We anthropomorphise our animals enough without having to apply pseudo-scientific attributes to a group that is mostly dependent on humans for their existence. My "pet" is just that. My responsibility to be nurtured and cared for. In whatever way that II may have acquired the animal, that brings responsibilities and obligations in their turn. However, if I can't call my pet "pet" to spare its feelings and those of human onlookers; please don't watch me in my vegetable garden because I am going to be extremely offensive to the point of murder wirh the mice that eat my peas and the slugs that act similarly towards my lettuces. Perhaps the same people that did the "pet" study might care to develop compulsive eating disorder programmes to combat such beastly antisocial activities!!

Yes, My pet, it IS ridiculous!!! Since the link I referenced came via the University of Illinois website, I can only assume that there was some kind of government grant money involved!!! Now to your desire to murder ... maybe we can apply for some of that grant money & ascertain how such a sweet man can have such a murderous heart???

This is stupid. These experts have too much time on their hands. I agree with you in that "pet" is a term of endearment. That's why we call words like sweetheart and honey PET names. In fact, some people use the word pet as a term of endearment for other humans.
I'm quite certain that when I refer to my animals as pets, they don't think anything like, "Oh how insulting. I can't believe that human would call me something like that." Duh. It's just ridiculous.

Hey LadyM! First of all, I like the idea of the "name changing" especially
for "wild animals". It's not their fault that they live the way they do!
That is what they are "born into". As for "pets", I've never thought of
my "furbabies" as anything but parts of my family! They are my "children"
and anyone who knows me and doesn't understand how I feel about them better
learn quick (my bf was a slow starter, but has eventually come around)! It
is love me, love my cats! When my bf moved in with me he was definitely not
an "animal lover". He hated my cat "Star" sleeping with me in the bed. He
tried everything(scaring, harrassing, flicking his ear) to get him out! And
whatever he did to hurt my "baby Star" he got right back! He didn't like getting
his ear flicked! Too damn bad! He finally took to "Luna" who used to hiss at him!
Now Luna is in love with his "daddy". When Lonnie (bf) comes home Luna "dances
on his back" and waits for "daddy" to pay attention to him! Far cry from hissing!
Now if I could just get him to do that with Star. For some reason he doesn't
like him! He still hates him sleeping in the bed and still tries to get him upset
so he leaves! I tell him he's "predjudice", but the fact is their both all black!

Good morning Leslie...
I have 5 furbabies & 4 of them are solid black...2 black cats & 2 Black Labs. The other one is white, brown & black...she's a Jack Russell Terrier. Before dating anyone, I invite them over to my house & see how well my babies like them. If they don't like him, he's outta here!!! If they like him, I go on the date!!! The ONLY time this didn't work was with my first husband & my cat at the time just loved him. As it turned out, he could charm the pants off ANY female he met & my cat was a female!!! I've been using this system for over 40 years & it has ONLY failed me once!!!!

whether we like it or not, some people will still see animals as pets. i dont have a problem with this term because they will always be defined as pets. but the owner thing kinda causes some sort of discomfort. i do own my dogs and im proud of it. im the owner and no one else... well except for my girlfriend and God. we treat our dogs like our siblings from the furry side of the family. lol! i dont degrade them by calling them pets. hey! these are dogs, they cant understand the English language. call them whatever you want... just treat them like real people and you wont have any problems.

Maybe it's because it's a term I grew up with, but I prefer the word "pet" to "animal companion"!!! I also prefer the word "owner" to "carer" as my mouth gets all twisted just trying to say "carer"...It just doesn't flow!!!
Thinking more about it, I don't think I usually say "I own". I think I usually say "I have". I do NOT treat my babies as slaves...they are SPOILED ROTTEN & eat BETTER than I do!!!

hello!
I don't think anyone could take this seriously. It's just...blah. Such a hassle to call them "animal companions" than the more easily said "pets".I don't think it's primitive to call them as such. Like you, I don't treat my dogs as possessions, but my babies. We know we're not primitive, and I think my dogs wouldn't mind it, as long as I give them their needs, and love them.
:)
