chemo 3 and allergic reaction

Hi everyone! I had my third round of chemo Monday and had a little problem. Everything went ok until the last drug finished running. I had been a little itchy toward the end and after it was finished, I became red all over. Several nurses came into the room and started asking all kinds of questions. At first apparently, just around my lips and nose was red. Then it started affecting my whole face and head (I'm bald now). Then it spread to my arms and legs. They kept asking me if I had trouble breathing. I don't know if I did or not, but apparently they thought that I did. A doctor came in and directed them to give me benedryl and something else to counteract the reaction. They called for an ambulance to take me to the hospital for observation overnight. When the ambulance took me away, my brother took my computer and everyone forgot about my shoes which were on the floor under the bed. I didn't realize it until after I was in the hospital room. About two hours after the reaction started, I was totally back to normal, but they already had me admitted for observation so I got to sleep there. I had to have my brother go back and bring my laptop back since I had some stuff I needed to get done that night. I had trouble sleeping so I finished reading a book and then I was on the computer until the medical staff came to check on me. I found out when the gyn/onc came through that it is not unusual for people to have an allergic reaction to carboplatin during the second or third round of treatment of a recurrence. Now they have to decide if they are going to change to another platinum-based drug, try to desenitize me to the carboplatin or take me off that one all together. Hopefully they will have an answer to that one by the next treatment. The joint pain started up again this afternoon so now I get to be miserable for another week. Oh well...at least I haven't felt overly nauseous yet. Have a great day!!!

Ho Deb, I´m sorry you had this extra problem. I just saw your post as I´ve been dedicating a lot of my time to working on my winter veggies and part time with health issues that make me go to med centers and have all sorts of examinations. Up to now, there´s no explanation for some health problems. We´ll see. Did you make those seed blankets for your joints? Warming joints do help out. Take care, friend.

I haven't made the seed blankets for my joints. I should really look into it before the next cycle so that maybe I can have an easier time of it. I guess it is mostly a matter of I am just plain lazy. I don't know how to make it and I don't have a lot of materials. I have been doing much better this week than I had been doing before so maybe the worst is over. Thanks for the response!

Any old flannel torn from an old nightie, will do. And you can sew it by hand and put rice inside. Mine is made of rice. But I know it is easier to say what to do than actually do it. My favorite sentence lately is "I should do this or that..." A warm shower or bathtub would help too.

As I said in the comment I left on your recent blog entry, I'm sending you gentle hugs, and am hoping you get a break from the joint pain.

Unfortunately, the joint pain started up last night. I still need to find something to make it not so bad because nothing I have tried has worked. Thanks for the response!

I have something you can try, it sounds really strange, but it will at least make you feel a little better. First, get a jar of vicks vapo rub. Put some wherever it hurts, and then get a cloth and get it as warm as you can stand. once the cloth is warm, put it right on top of where you put the vicks. The heat will release the vaopors from the vicks and help the pain ease somewhat.

Wow what an experience for you. Sorry it made you react that way but glad they were able to clear a.s.a.p. Hope the joint pain is not as bad as the last time. Make note now that now you are allergic to this so that they or some other treatment involving the carboplatin does not get administered. Feel better.

Hopefully whatever goal they decide next won't cause problems like that again. I bet that was real scary. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with the aching again. Hopefully it isn't as painful and doesn't last.

I think the pain is the hardest part of all of this to deal with. I'm over the hair loss. But the pain comes for up to a week after each treatment. I'm just glad that treatments aren't more often than once every three weeks. Thanks for the response!

You're brave. A woman in our church has stage 4 cervical cancer (she's only 60). She was accepted into a clinical trial because they really had nothing to lose the doctor said. The chemo has sent her to the hospital several times already. She is getting ready to get out of ICU right now and go to a regular room. I guess this is a new deadlier kind of chemo she is doing. Although, isn't any kind of chemo deadly? I really hope this is the last time the chemo surprises you with side effects. You deserve a break already!
