Friends like its name; "Akshaya" means the never diminishing in Sanskrit. It is a “Symbol of Bringing Prosperity within the Family”.
It falls on the third lunar day of Bright Half of Hindu month – ‘Vaishakha’ every year.
This is beginning of summer here. This year it is falling on 6th May, 2011 so this day can be considered the most auspicious day to perform all auspicious occasions, like marriage, tonsuring of head hair, ear piercing, nose piercing, home construction, pilgrimage.
Akshaya Tritiya as the name suggests, gives permanence and immortality of the desire that we wish to get fulfilled. If it is wealth or if it is love, let it be permanent and not transitory. This day is ruled by the preserver-God in the Hindu Trinity, Lord Vishnu and is celebrated as the birthday of his sixth avatar, sage Parashurama.
The day is particularly considered auspicious for buying long term assets like gold and silver, including ornaments , diamond and other precious gem stones.
The legend states that any venture initiated on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya shall continue to grow and bring prosperity.
The foundation stone for my third building will be laid tomorrow 9.20am IST, most auspicious time as per my horoscope
As per our tradition we send earthen pitches full with cool water, homemade sweets, juicy fruits like water melon, mango, cucumber, jackfruit etc and a fan made from bamboo leaves to homes of our married sisters, daughters.
This is kept ready for my only sister who lives 2 blocks away from my home. I will go with our maid servant to give in the early morning tomorrow.
My only daughter lives 50 kilometers away, my son will go and give these things to her.
Such act makes the family bond tight.
I am sure my friends will like this information on our faith and believes .
What is your thinking and views on this?
Do you have similar festivals?
Share your thoughts and views.
Thanks in advance.

I also celebrated Akshaya Tritiya like most of the Indians by buying Gold in the form of ETF. With the change of time now a days Gold buying tradition has taken many forms as earlier it was only limited to physical form of Gold i.e. coins, bars, jewellery, etc. but now a days people are buying bullion gold from commodities market and Gold ETF from stock exchange in paper form.
It is also right that the investment made on this auspicious day will prove to be best investment made by person. Hindus celebrate this festival to enjoy the prosperity in their life specially till Goddess Lakshmi arrives at their home on Diwali.

Hi Professor, Thank you once again for sharing some of your traditions with us. It is fascinating to learn of other faiths and cultures and the Internet has helped so much. Please don't stop this sharing as it is people like you who help others come to learn and understand customs that would otherwise remain foreign to them. Blessings.

Hi Professor, Yes Akshaya tritiya is famous and considered auspicious. And on this day buying gold is believed to bring all good and prosperity. My family usually buy gold but since gold rate is too high, they will still buy but at less rates for sure. Happy Akshaya Tritiya to you and family!
