My 8-year-old has another tough theology question

He asked me whether or not God knew he was going to have a son when He created the world. I am really not sure of the answer (or what answer I should give to him). Any thoughts?

Well maybe He did know. After all they say God is Omniscient. Maybe from the very beginning when He gave man freewill, He knew man would sin, and He knew He needs to sacrifice a son to save as all men...

It is very possible. . .and yes, he is very smart, and curious. Thanks for the compliment about him--nice to hear on Mother's Day!

By the way, your son is really smart. Very promising, hehe...

well... just tell him yes, God knew about getting a Son. if he asks why then just answer him that God is more powerful than all the marvel heroes combined and Superman. just knowing if he's getting a Son is just like wolverine cleaning his nails with his claws. he'll get the idea of how almighty God is.

I don't think he'll fall for it. . .he's pretty quick. It's the "why" part of the question that is the tough one.

yes, i think he would have known this is going to happen anyway. but God did try to still not do it perhaps because he has somehow tried to teach the people their lessons... several times in egyt through moses, and even through the ruins of sodom and gomorrah and even through noah. but we are hard headed people... we just never learned and we never would have really taken him seriously... maybe God did try to save the son himself by not sending him over as a sacrifice but it has come to a point that he had no choice... well that is my opinion... but i'd like to ask that to a friend who is studying theology. =)

Your opinion is a good one, and makes a lot of sense. I am curious to hear what your friend has to say. Let me know!

Just like any question about god or otherwise, tell him what you think the possibilities are and let him make his own guess and beliefs. When my kids ask me if there is a god or other questions I always ask what they think. And I always tell my kids that anything is possible. I can't answer what I don't know for sure about.

That's what I usually try to do, but this question --and the possible answers--has so many possible pitfalls. Why would God want to harm his own son? Or why, if God is all-powerful, did he make man knowing he would sin? How did he decide when Jesus would be born if he knew all along that he was coming? And many more, I'm sure! It gets very tricky!

I believe God has made a wonderful and unique plan for each one of us even before the time we were born, even before the time we were formed. He wants us to live a good life, which can only be achieved if we do His will, if w do things His way not ours. If we let God's will prevail over ours, surely, we'll have that wonderful life that has long been entitled for us.
