Hello myLotters! Turning the lights off especially at night and you are still using the computer is really a bad habit. Well, I cannot say that I don't do this but every time when my brother sleeps, I have to switch off the lights and still use the computer. What I usually do is to roll or blink my eyes so that it would not cause further eye strain. And I know it's a bad habit. Do you like to turn the lights off while you're still using the computer?

If your doing any stressful work or playing games you shouldn't turn the lights off. Its not only a bad habit its like hell for your eyes. I only turn of lights while I watch movie because I can enjoy movie from a relatively fair distance. So when I play games or do some work as I am sitting closely to my screens I really don't turn it off. Exceptions I only turn of lights in close proximity while playing horror games :)

I know it is a terrible habit for the eye cuz when I play games I play about 10-12 hrs a day and in case of horror games I play 2-3hrs at a stretch at night without lights on so it is difficult but you can piss ur pants.

I too know that its a bad habit. And it goes same for me too. I also use my laptop or computer while my mother turns the lights off was i still have my works left to do at that time , when she sleeps. It really is a very bad habit as it gives more strain to our eyes. Although i have abnormal powers in my eyes. i have negative power of -7.5 in my both eyes. But still i can't do anything as work is too important !

Wow. A negative power? So I guess you can see more clearer than the normal vision of a person? Or is it just my weird thinking? Wow, that's the first time I've met a person with a negative degree. I'm speechless. Anyway, yes, work is really important. It has to be on time and no matter what happens, you just have to keep working on it.

Well it depends on the computer screen using. I'm using a 20" inch (wide screen) Apple iMac. Lights 'off' or 'on' the iMac screens are not too sharp or too bright for my eyes to get strains or irritations. At night time, I'm just only using my desk lamp for relaxing, soothing and ambience effects. Though my screen brightness are not adjusted to full100% but only just for a half brightness adjustments, the screen still crisp and easy for the eyes.

Yes you right about that. The iMac's screen displays actually literally pops-out depending on the shades or shadows of the graphics, it is almost like a 3D display screen. What I don't have on my iMac is the Automatic Ambient screen display effects. When I bought my iMac then just a couple of few months they came up new sets of Apple Macs (not include the Mac Mini and Mac Pro) that has these Ambient effects and also they are equipped with lower consumption, less heat, more environmental friendly LED Displays. The Ambient effects technology are just like with those on the MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, it automatically adjust the brightness or just blend at the surrounding depending either on a day-time or a night-time.

Guilty! Same goes with me. I have no choice but to turn off the lights while using the computer since my roommates are already fast asleep. Yes, I had eye strain and even headaches but eversince I had this anti radiation glasses, somehow it kept me from further problems.

We are really in the same boat in this kind of situation yeah? I also have my glasses but I do not know if it is anti-radiation. Wearing glasses could really help though. Now, I'm forcing myself to stop using the computer whenever my brother (in my house) or any of my roommates (in my dorm) would go to sleep.

If you choose to buy the protective or anti-radiation screen, you could minimize the bright lights shining to your eyes. It is possible that computers do not emit those kind of lights. Just either adjust the brightness at the CMOS or at the regular screen.

It is a bad habit. I have a light over the screen. If I don't feel like having the overhead light on, I turn it on. I wouldn't use it in the dark anyway, because of how my keyboard is set up, I couldn't see the keys.

I touch type also, but there are some keys that I need to look at. Like most of the number keys.

I never want to hurt my eyes by using my computer in an insufficient light environment.
I believe the symptom of our eyesight will be obviously shown once we reach certain age if we keep on watching television, books, computer and so on under such bad environment.
Many truck drivers whom I know are having eyesight problems after driving the trucks during the night for so many years.
After the eye surgery, their eyesight are still not fully recovered yet.
I hope you should take care of your eyes carefully.
Once the light is off, you should rest too.
Take care.

I sometimes do it, maybe with a soft light from the outside that enters the room, but with no real light where I am. I know, it's bad, it causes a lot of eye strain and maybe a headache. I do that less and a less now, I've learned my lesson by now.
But it gives a great environment to watch a video or movie, if I place the screen away from me, and with the lowest bright, it's not that bad really.

As much as I want to, I want to use the PC with lights on at night. However, the PC in the house is in my mom's room, and she ALWAYS wants me to shut the lights off. No wonder why my eyesight is getting blurry each day.

Yeah I do that sometimes. Actually it's like this. I'll be using my computer but the day turns dark and because I'm so very lazy to get up and turn on the lights, I'll be using computer in the dark. Then my dad comes along with his lectures and turns on the light
I know it's bad and my eyesights are getting worst day by day

i think it is a bad habit. especially when your computer monitor is still CRT (you know this, of course). but even though it is LCD, it still isn't a good idea. this is because the sorrounding area is already dark. which gives more glare coming from your screen. which strains the eye even more. which is dangerous in the long run.
i remember reading an article before regarding the "ambient lighting" when staring into a monitor- tv or computer or anything else.

I agree with you. It is a strain on the eyes and can effect your sight. Lights on please.

Using the computer with all the lights off definitely damages our eyes. It strain our eyes a lot.
For me, i do not like to turn off all the lights when using the computer because my eyes will hurt after a while.
DO you want to try going to another location to use your computer when your brother starts sleeping?

It's really a bad habit because it could harm our eyes. We usually do that only when watching online movies. It would be nicer to watch movies if the lights are off, the resolution I think is much better. My husband would like to tease the kids when watching scary movies by turning off the lights so that they would hug him, that is a lot of fun for the family though.
In case when I need to type, I don't turn off the lights because I have a hard time with the keyboard.

Yes, it's okay if we are watching movies while the lights are turned off. We just have to make sure the distance of the screen and ourselves. It must be far from the screen. It's good to hear that you and your husband would have some fun times with kids. And yes, it is really too hard whenever a person would type without the lights on. Whenever I switch off the lights, I would eventually close my eyes and touch type, so that I could hinder myself from staring too much at the screen.
