The reason for the naming is historical. Blood groups A and B were the first named. They are so called because they carry different inherited antigens (respectively antigen-A and antigen-B) and each blood group develops the opposite group of antibodies in the first few months of life. Blood group AB is a combination of A and B, carries BOTH antigens and develops no corresponding antibodies. Blood group O is so called because the 'O' represents a zero - it carries no antigens (but develops both antibodies anti-A and anti-B). The other major blood grouping is the Rhesus system (so called because the research involved blood from Rhesus monkeys). Both systems are described here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1047168/the_two_major_classifications_for_human.html?cat=5

Hi gorila my friend, I'll share a little info for u. Human blood group is determined based on the types of antigens and antibodies contained in blood. Individuals with type A blood have red blood cells with the A antigen on the surface of the cell membrane Individuals with type B blood have B antigens on the surface of red blood cells Individuals with type AB blood have red blood cells with antigen A and B Individuals with blood type O blood cells have no antigens So my own conclusion refers to the name of antigen which is owned by the blood itself. As the blood group A antigen were A. Naming problem why should so-called A or B as it did in naming the x-ray. X here is unknown, so the mean X-ray beam that is undefined. Second, the naming is usually nothing to do with the inventor's own group (awards for the inventor) Good day

I'm confused, too, as to why there are so many types of blood. What's the difference between A or B, AB or O.

I think it is the one who discovered those blood types knows the answer. Blood type A,B,AB,and O are named like that because in our blood chemistry there is a part wherein they do have that kind of findings. It was named according to the serotypes that they had seen.
