Do you still use mouse pads?

I recently opened a gift my girlfriend gave to me, and it was a customized mousepad. It had an Apple logo and checkered black and white a the background. I must say I really like it. Anyway, it got me thinking. Do you guys still use mousepads? Gone are the days where every mice uses a trackball, and a mousepad was needed for friction, especially on slippery desk surfaces. Most mice these days are already optical, and can be used on almost any surface, rendering the mousepad obsolete. I for one know my mouse works even without the pad. But I'm really digging this new gift she gave to me, so I'll probably be using this from then on. It's literally been years since I used my last mousepad. Years.. It looks cool on the desk, by the way. =) How about you guys? You still use one?

Yeah before when mice use trackballs they were as important as the mouse itself. But when the optical mouse became mainstream, mice can be used even without the pad. I guess we can say it is a remnant of technology and it is now obsolete. People I know who still use mousepads either use it because of its design and it looks good. But that's just it.

Hi blackscrumpy! I still use a mouse pad for my PC, but mostly because I like the one I have. I also don't want the bottom of my mouse to get scrated because it has the "light". I have a cute kitten mousepad and I just like the way it looks so I keep it there since I am used to having it!

That's good for ya dude! Your girlfriend is so sweet. Awwwoo . . . She gave you an Apple. lol. Yeah I like my MousePad while using my Apple Magic Mouse on it. It feels good and better than moving over the desk top. My MousePad is a laminated plastic with a hot girl and a hot car. I think it is look like the Tokyo car drifters stuffs. But, sooner I won't be using MousePads because I'm planning to buy an Apple Magic Trackpad.

Yeah! you betcha rightfully right dude! hahahaha. . . . Late 80's, my very first personal computer was an Apple IIe. Actually it never broken ever since I use it. It just been rusty corroded at the basement because I just never used it anymore ever since I use Microsoft's Windows PC. But the moment I have the chance again to buy and get back again on an Apple Mac, I just grabbed that opportunity instantly two years ago. Now I'm using again an Apple personal computer, an iMac this time. Purely great satisfaction. The Apple Magic Trackpad is a Bluetooth interface connectivity (absolutely wireless). It is the next thing I wanted wishes to buy together with the Apple's Battery Charger with 6 pieces of AA rechargeable batteries. Though, the Apple Magic Mouse presently now using is still superbly very nice and sweet mouse, it is mightier than the Apple's Mighty Mouse. And, it is still working smoothly, I'm using for more than a year.

Hello there gjabaigar.. I'm guessing you're an Apple fan? Hahaha... Regardless, I really like using a mouse pad these days. Couldn't believe how I made it through the years without it. I have seen the Magic Mouse in stores a few days ago, and I really like how it looks. I bet it looks good with my Mac. If only I had a Mac, hahaha.. Anyway, does the Magic Trackpad come in wireless ones?

I don't use mouse pads anymore. Probably because I lost mine long time ago. Since the surface where I use my mouse is really smooth, I don't consider buying one in te future.

Hi there chiwasaki... I too haven't used mouse pads for a long time. My optical mouse works fine without on, on almost any surface. So I really didn't needed one. But ever since I started using a mouse pad again, I found it comfortable. I must say I really like how it feels on my wrist, and the friction the mouse does against the pad. Feels just right. And it looks cool on my table, by the way. You have to consider buying one.. Hahaha..not that it really is anything important, but it does feel a whole lot comfortable, in my case, anyway. All in all, it just boils down to personal preference and habits. Have a nice day..

Well I don't use a mousepad anymore because I don't like using a mouse. I am more at ease when a using the touch pad. I would have to say though that your girlfriend is pretty cool. :)

You don't use a mouse? Aww good for you! I can use my laptop all day, but it's really hard using just the touch pad. I mostly do multimedia work in my computer and can't live without a mouse. However, even for just surfing and chatting, I still tremble at the thought of just using a touch pad. I don't know. My touch pad get sticky easily, or sometimes slimey and oily, until its sensors could not read my fingertips anymore. No kidding.. I envy people who can live with just the touch pad. For surfing and chatting only, of course.. hahaha... You're right, she is one pretty cool girlfriend. Thanks..hehe..

Hehe.. Yes as a matter of fact I don't like using the mouse. I use the mouse for everything, even gaming. But you and my brother are the same though he hates the touch pad. He says it's too sensitive. :)

yes I still use it, I have optical mouse but I still use it :p It makes the mouse moves more freely. Even if you say optical mice can be used in almost all terrain, but not in my place, it needs mouse pad. Anyway this mousepad isn't mine, my friend left it at my home so I think he didn't need it anymore :p
• Philippines

Maybe he didn't need it anymore after all. Because if he did, he would have come back for it. :P Yes optical mice can be used on almost any surface, but of course they are also not created the same. From what I know most basic optical mice don't work efficiently on transparent and rough surfaces. Or sometimes even on flat surfaces the laser won't work quite as well. Good to know mouse pads still serve a purpose than just looking cool!

It is quite a while since I used a mousepad, and I cannot even remember how long ago it was. As you say it was an essential item years ago and gradually lost importance as mouse technology advanced. I did have a good collection of mousepads at one time, although sadly I seem to have misplaed the majority of them.

Yes if you think about it, it seems that mice with track balls belong to the dinosaurs. Optical mice is the norm these days and technology moves so fast. It's only been years after all. I always used cheap mouse pads back then. You know, those kinds you pick up at dollar stores. It easily wore out, so I resorted to using bond paper or my notebook all the time. Until I finally bought myself an optical mouse and never used a mouse pad ever since. Wow. It's practically been years.

Mouse pad are out of fashion. But it is gift from your GF so no question that it is usable or not. You keep it with you as lovely memory of your Girl friend. I am not using mouse pad from last three years.

Hi anil02... I too haven't used a mouse pad for about 5 years now. Wow... Now that i think about it, it's been that long already??? Anyway, yeah I actually had no plans of using any sort of mouse pad ever since, but my girlfriend gave me one, so I guess I have to use it. And use it, I did! It feels so comfortable and easy to use. The friction of my mouse to the pad is so just right, that I think makes my work a lot more productive, as well as my whole computing experience. It makes me think how I made it without one all these years.

I do still use that because I'm already make it as my habit and feel uncomfortable without mousepad. In all around me, most of people still use mouse pad, I dont know may in our country have different quality of mouse or just have different habit

Have you tried not using one yet? Your mouse will work even without one. But the friction on your workspace will have a different feeling than when you use a pad, so you might not like using no pad at all. anyway, it just gets a little getting used to. I haven't used one in years and that is how I've always work, and found no problems at all. I guess it is just habit sometimes, as you said. But right now I'm using one again. I'm liking it, and sometimes I couldn't even think how I made it through without one. Hahha..

Hi ckciasigurl... I use a laptop too myself, and a USB mouse as well. My mouse works even on bed sheets, that it why I was so used to not using a mouse pad for years. But now, I'm back to using one again and I am really enjoying it. It feels much more comfortable especially when I do some computer work and gaming. But it also feels right in just surfing and chatting. Glad to know mouse pads still are used like people like you. And me.. =)

For me I still prefer mouse pads because not all surfaces do optical mouses have a good contact. I have even experienced a a cursor that shakes even if I'am not moving the mouse, this is due to the surface that even though I am using an optical mouse the contact surface still matters so I think your very lucky man having a a gift that you really like and is very useful too.

Yes I really like my gift. It really feels comfortable and looks cool on my desk. Thanks.. When I don't use a mouse pad, I also sometimes experience the cursor to be jumpy and randomly moving in different locations on the screen. Then I realise it is the touch pad, I forgot to turn it off. So maybe that is the cause of your problem? It happens to me all the time, I always forget to turn it off, after all. Or maybe it could indeed be just the sensor of your optical mouse. I agree that there are still some optical mouse that are only suited for certain surfaces, like smooth and flat. In those conditions, a mouse pads can really help the sensors to function correctly.

I do not have a mouse pad anymore but I do believe that mouse pads, in today's society, are used more for fashion than for necessity. Since we are in the age of where all mice are optical, mouse pads are completely useless for their original use of protecting the ball on the bottom of a mouse. I do believe, though, that mouse pads can come back by making them stylish and unique to one's own personal interests. I will be getting one as soon as I buy a mouse.

It's been years since I used my last mouse pad, and wow it's really comfortable being able to use one again. Optical mice are the norm these days, so the real purpose of the mouse pad is kinda obsolete now, because there aren't any trackballs anymore. But I do agree that some mouse pads can be really stylish and unique. It adds a bit of flavor to the otherwise dull desk or workspace. Aside from looking good, some mouse pads are really comfortable.

thanks to the optical mouse version technology today, and mouse pad for me is no longer important as long as the surface is not like those of a crystal. the front flat surface of the laptop is also a good surface for a mouse user attached to the laptop.

You mean the touch pad? It is good for surfing and chatting. Nice to know it works right for you. But in my case, I couldn't use a touch pad for longer periods. The touch pad easily gets sticky and oily, until a time will come the sensors on the pad couldn't even read my fingertips any more. It certainly isn't a long term tool for me. So I have to use a mouse.

Hello npatel20... Like the above users, you too use a mouse pad. It is a personal preference after all, and I too already like using one as well, after years of having not used one. I'm sure finding a girlfriend right for you is the easy part. It is chances of whether or not she gives you a mouse pad as a gift is the hard part! Hahaha.. Unless of course, you tell her that's what you want. But anyway, good luck to you and happy my Lotting!

I still like the use a mouse pad. It makes it so much easier to glide and control the mouse when I use a pad. if I don't use a pad, I do notice a remarkable difference.

It's been years since the last time I used a mouse pad. I've always do my work not using one. It wasn't until the other day when I started using one again. And wow, it really feels good and comfortable. Indeed pads do make a remarkable difference, especially if working or playing for long hours. I couldn't believe how I actually made it before without using one.

Nowadays every computer user prefers use of optical mouse. Optical mouse does not need a mouse pad. It just requires a smooth surface and does not require any friction. I stopped using a mouse pad ever since I switched over to optical mouse.

I don't use a mouse pad anymore. I use an optical mouse and carrying a mouse pad on my laptop bag only clutters my bag. I also sometimes use the touch pad on my laptop and don't bother using the mouse.
• Philippines
8 May 11
Well I envy you, my friend. I've always tried to do away with the mouse and just get used with the touch pad. I can use the touch pad just fine, yes. But for long periods my touch pad gets oily and sticky, until the sensors of the touch pad cannot properly read my the motion of my fingertips. And to add to this, most of my work (and play, of course!) requires me to use a mouse, especially since I will be on it for long hours, even days, actually. So it is really a good thing for you that you are able to use your laptop without using a mouse. In terms of portability, my laptop bag have a small pocket for the mouse to house in. So it's not really a hassle bringing one along. Well, to each his own anyway right? Glad to know what you think. Have a nice day.

Haven't used one for years because my optical mouse works on my thigh! When I did have ball mouse in the past, I found that most mouse pads didn't actually work well, or they didn't stay on the desk - I was forever picking them up off the floor. The best one was a piece of soft thin rubber that actually came from a "freebie" web site. It took 9 months to arrive by post and is the only thing I have ever received from such a site. That one was about four times bigger than the usual pads and stuck to the table well. Still have it somewhere!

They should invent 'thigh mouse pads' for users like you.. Now if only the market for it was a little bigger...hehehe..

I've never before considered not using a mouse pad. I just tried my mouse out without it and it actually works perfectly. Still, I'll keep on using my pad because I like the look of it :)

Same here. I know that my mouse will function correctly even with out a pad. And besides, it has been years since the last time I used a mouse pad anyway. But my new mouse pad looks good on the desk, plus it feels a lot comfortable, to be honest. So like you, I too will keep using my pad, not because of the mouse, but because it looks cool. Hehehe..
• Canada
6 May 11
Well whether I use a mouse pad or not depends on the slipperiness of the table and the grip(not sure of the word) of the mouse. My mouse(on screen) would go practically everywhere without my mouse pad. My other computer has another mouse which doesn't require a mouse pad.
• Philippines
8 May 11
Yes that what makes optical mouse have an advantage over the traditional mouse using mouseball. All you need is a flat surface and the optical mouse will still work. There are times it won't, but at least it is safe to say most of the time it will.. Most optical mice have a hard time working on surfaces which are glassy as the laser can pass through them.
