When I worked as a children's nanny in Finland the children began school at 7 years old. In my home country the legal age for a child to begin school is 5 years old but most children start school at 4 years old. If the parents don't want this and apply for their child to go to school when he or she is 5 years old the school places will be full up. In my local area lots of children will begin school this September. No more school places for that age group are available in my local area.
One lady forgot the date all the applications for school places hd to be in. She has been told her child doesn't yet have a school place. This lady feels very stressed and upset. The local council will have to find her child a school place somewhere! I remember when we moved to this area and my oldest son was in the final year of primary school. Only two schools had a place available for him in Year 6.
Which age dio children begin school in your home country?
What is it like getting a school place for a child?
Have you got any idea what the forgetful lady should do?

In my country usually a child can be in school at the age of 4 yrs. old. And in that school year, the child really don't study they just like playing as they are in their home.. For me in that age, they really enjoy playing. The learning they gain is just like in their home, and some of parents don't enroll their children at that age, instead they teach their children in there home alone. well, i think it is more practical and effective that a mother will able to teach her children. They can have a quality time while she teach her children.. Also a mother can properly guide her children unlike for example in a school, the ratio of a teacher to her student is 1:20 so the teacher can't really focus on every student. the learner that a one student can get from her teacher is not the same with the other children..

My son started school at 4 years old. It was only a couple of days a week, and a couple of hours a day. I think it works well for him. He's already 5 now, and will go to kindergarten on September. This year would be the start where kids in kinder would have to go to school the whole day, 5 days a week. Last year was the last where it was just half a day.
I'm not sure yet how he would cope up.

In my country, children go to school as early as three years old. I even heard of a new school here that accepts two-year old children. There is a special curriculum for these children and it is beneficial to them because they start to learn early. Children as young as two to three years old enjoy playing and so the curriculum is more on educational play and toys given to them are those that are appropriate to their age. Those schools that are accepting 3 to 5 years old children are prepares them for elementary level.

There are so many programs here in the United States to start children so early now in learning. I guess I am from the old school. My babies were precious to me while I had them for their 5 years at home to enjoy myself. I always let my children be children and sleep and wake as they needed. I knew once they started school they had a day set to follow. I let my children go to day care for a bit when siblings were in school not because I had to but because i wanted to allow them to interact with other children. They never went for a full day. I even found a preschool in a ballet school that offered one hour of tap and ballet, and one our of preschool just so they could be around others and get an interest in the arts.It was so cute just to watch them at 2 and 3 try to do what the ballet instructor did.
I felt that once school started, we lost a lot of time with our children so I felt always the first 5 years of their life was important to be a child. you have to spend the rest of your life learning and studying.

In the uk, children generally start school at the age of 4 however most children go to nursery school (pre-school) which is for 2-4 year olds. To send a child to a state school I think is relatively easy but to enrol a child in a private school is much harder as they is a high demand for only a few schools. My parents had to send of my application and look around schools before I was 1 years old.

I started school at the age of four, and because of that I was writing quite well before I went to kindergarten (I was reading at the age of 3, but they did teach the children to read in the class I was in). Even though it put me at an advantage, I don't think I would enroll my child in school that early. I think the majority of children are 5 or 6 when they start kindergarten. Even then, it doesn't seem like they learn much at that age. It appears that first grade is when the real learning starts.

Here, you register at your local school the year before and the school hires enough teachers and finds enough classrooms for them all. Children may start school at 5 years old. They have to be in school by age 6. They can start at 4 1/2 if they're very mature or very smart. Otherwise, they have to wait until 5 1/2. Free public education is the law in New York State. 6-16 yrs old, they have to provide an education.
Kids must register, get a physical and note from a Dr., vaccinations, and be pretested in the spring. Then they start school in September.
I would say she should write dates, times, places, and phone numbers on her calendar like the rest of us do. How does she get to Dr. appointments? What is she going to do when the kid gets older and has to have photos taken and all kinds of things done? Who's the parent? Geesh.

In the US in my state I believe the cut off used to be if the child's birthday is before November they can start kindergarten at four years old. I was four when I started kindergarten but my birthday is in the middle of September right after the school year started. It's different for every state but generally children enter kindergarten at five years old.

Most children in America start their first school year at the age of 5 years old. However, there are now some new programs such as Speech, which allow the children to come from home for a few hours to help correct their speech program before they enter full time school. There are also some programs such as ESE programs especially for special needs children that are at least three years old; these children are full time students who are contained in a special setting with specially trained ESE teachers. Some of the students are nonverbal who are all in one setting and there are verbal children who will eventually move out to first grade. So, some children start school as early as 3 years old.

Hi maximax: It's nice to read how people from different countris have their own rules regarding school and the age where kids start studying. Here in my country teh kids usually start school at age 4. 20 years before they started studying at age 6 but it has changed. Every school year start at the end of January and it ends on November. We have vacations for the Holy Week, on June and on September. It's difficult to find a place on a school because there are so many kids so it's almost as you have mentioned here too.

My kids went to nursery when they were 4 years old. There are many private nurseries and kindergartens here in my state, so we have a variety to choose from. Sometimes we get information on which kindy is better from our neighbours or friends. And we will go to that kindy to check out the facilities to see if it suits us before registering.
Every child would have to start registering for local primary schools when they are 5 years old. And the placement of schools will be fixed by our local education department.
If that lady you mentioned has already registered before in any schools, I'm sure that your local council would have a record of the registration. It is the duty of any local council to keep a record of such registration.

here in our country, some of the kids start going to school at the age of 5, and some at the age of 6. maybe it depends on the maturity of the kid. my son start going to summer school at the age of 5 as well as my youngest kid. we have a lot of schools for the children. we have public and private schools. maybe we are fortunate to have lots of school, we dont have hard times finding one for our children.

hi maximax8,
During my time, I wasn't able to attend kinder or any pre-elementary school because my parents cannot afford such education. Pre-elementary in our place when I was young is more expensive compared in attending to grade 1. You don't have to spend much money to go to school since it is a public school.
Right now, my kids is in pre-elementary level. My eldest just graduated this March from Preparatory level and incoming grade 1 this June at the age of 6. My second will be enrolling in nursery level and he is only 3 years old. Right now, my 3 years old boy knows how to count from 1-20, write and sing his ABC's.
Every parent wants not a better but the best future for their kids. That's why I always guiding them to develop their skills. I want them to be prepared always in school to enjoy their school days and graduate with flying colors. My eldest is not the top 1 but always included in top 3.
God Bless!

I started kindergarten at age 4 but at the time official age for entry into primary school (Grade 1) was 6 and one could start school then too.
But now things are very touch in India...and the age of children starting school gets lower and lower. 6 years is the age for Grade 1...but it's really hard into get into a school at that age unless a child has attended kindergarten somewhere (preferebly in the same school)...they also need to take a test for Grade 1.
As far as pre-schools and kindergartens goes, till a couple of years back, 3.5 yrs to 4 years starting lower(junior) kindergarten was the first step towards schooling. Now it is 2.5 years for pre-school!!!! Starting school at kindergarten is passe...it's pre-school now and most schools even have a toddler group for kids aged 1.6 years to 1 year 10 months!!! It's hard to get admission to Senior kindergarten without taking lower kindergarten in the same school....and that in turn makes it difficult to get into Grade 1...since the students of the same school get first preference.
Looks like it's easier to get a seat when the child changes schools in higher grades than in the lower grades.
It's really really tough here...and recently a friend of mine had to stand in a queue overnight to get the admission form for kindergarten for her 4 year old child!! This was for the ADMISSION FORM alone......for 40 seats, there were atleast 200 ppl waiting when she joined the line. She then had 2 rounds of interviews...one with the parent...another with the child...and even then she wasn't sure the child would get the seat. When she almost did get the seat, it was hanging in the balance because they stayed 7 km away from the school!! Finally they did get admission but what a stressful time for the whole family!
What can the forgetful lady do? I have no idea!

Generally, most children in the U.S. begin school at about 5 years of age. However, in some states, they let parents waive the earliest year (kindergarten) if the parents feel that the child is not ready for school. But, many parents put their children in pre-school as young as 2 years old.
I don't have children, so I don't know about registering them. But, I do know you have to register them at a specific school based on where you live. Most people don't have a choice as to what school they go to and the school has to accommodate every child that is of age to attend. However, some children can apply to special magnet or charter schools and they do have application periods and "places". If you forget to apply, or don't get in, you go to the local public school.

Here if your child is up to 6 years old before September, then he/she can go to school at the age of 6. If your child is up to 6 years old after September, then he/she has to go to school next year. Namely they will go to school when they are 7 years old. Before that, children are supposed to stay in the kindergarten.

Hi maximax! The age for children to start here is around the same. One of my children started at 4 and one at 6. It depends on the deadlines and how their b-days fall. I think that 4 is a little young for regular school...preschool is awesome for that age though.
In my area...it is up to the school to make these arrangements. If you live in their district, your child has a place in that school no matter what. I have known of people that lived out of the district to want their children to go to certain schools, but because of the over crowding, they were denied and had to attend the school in the area that they lived.
