So how much do you really know about Chinese education system ? Have you ever heard about here in China the schools and colleges judge students solely on test scores ? How come the high test scores is the criterion and the only one when schools are recruiting .

llsling, In the first place, meritocracy is nothing new in this world and certainly not China. So, I do not think there's anything wrong with the education system as far as this is concern. It is a rat race world outside and schools will need to prepare the promising futures about the harsh realities of this society we belong and live in. I am sure if you are hiring in a Fortune 500 company, the resume sitting on top of the pile would be holding the most outstanding academic results than others who merely secured a borderline pass. Likewise, the best universities in China like Bei Da or Qing Hua will only accept top students from the entrance exams. So, there's no issue to complain but to get the grades needed.

llsling, Care to elaborate what you mean about how stupid students are solely judged on test scores? How stupid can students be?

There are so many problems with the education system of China. But I don't think it's a better way to totally change this system in a short time. It's true that students should not be solely judged by scores. But don't forget the fact that in China too many high school students compete for too few opportunities in universities. Scores of are relatively fair standard to decide who get the opportunity.

It's reasonable the education is a mess when millions of people are still starving . The governors did the best of it .

I think most students suffer a high study pressure in the school. It seems that the main job for the students is only study. Their time is full of lessons, homework and so on. They hardly have their own time. Even if I have left school for so long time, but sometimes I still will have a nightmare about exams at night. I love China

It's a relief that we all are done and over with the nightmare but our kids are still suffering it .

I used to teach English in Taiwan and I felt sorry for the kids. They were pushed to do so much even at a young age. I taught preschool so they were from 3-6 years old and besides school they also had math, dance, music, art classes after school. I saw plenty of middle school aged kids with gray hair! I imagine it was from stress. I would see them finally going home around 9pm at night because they just got out of class. I felt sorry for them because it was like they didn't have a childhood. A lot of them really couldn't think for themselves either because they were so used to always being told what to do. I remember once I told my kids to draw a picture of whatever they wanted. They just looked at me with a confused look. They asked me what to draw. I told them to draw what they wanted but they couldn't and I thought that was a little sad. On the other hand they were more advanced in some ways than what I have seen in The US. When I was in school I didn't really learn to read until I was about in first grade if I recall correctly. These kids in preschool were reading when they were four and five. I saw that there was a lot of pressure up until high school but then when they got to college they kind of gave up because by then their brains had turned to mush because of all the studying and pressure before college.

Hi, well,I come from China and finished my college here... You just can't say the Chinese education style is bad,,it has advantage of its own...Chinese students studied a lot when they were in school, and the thing they studied is very helpful.. and there are some bad things,,as there are so many students in China and limited education resources,,so not every one can go to college..and the method used to recruit students also has problems.. but China is reforming the system now ,everyday, and now,I think the education system is much better than 10 years ago,,so give China some more time..we need time..^^ thanks for sharing..
