It's the one who stands out as being different (like a black sheep would in a field of white sheep). There are also connotations of failure.
In a family of academics, he might be the one who doesn't go to college.
In a family of bankers, he might be the one who becomes an artist.
In a family who have all had long-lasting marriages, he might be someone with five divorces under his belt.

Black sheep could also mean a family member doesn't fit in with others in the family and is an outcast from the rest of the family.

Hello Lee and welcome to myLot. My dad was the blacksheep of our family. The blacksheep can be one who embarrasses a family by his actions. He or she can also be the bad boy like a criminal. In my dad;s case he was the one that was always in trouble with women, finances or not settling down to care for his children. Some times the black sheep just trows the family values out the window.
