HOW do we become happy? It's that elusive feeling, isn't it?
Well, I found this site [ http://rulestobehappy.tumblr.com ]which shares some tips on how to be happy. Users submit their own ways to be happy, and they're on top #0079 now. Some of my favorite rules are : #74 Learn to find pleasure in the simple things in life, and #78: ...Avoid people who make you unhappy.
What are your favorite rules? And what are some rules you would want to contribute to the site?
happy mylotting! :)

Happiness is a state of mind. If we think that we are happy, perhaps we are happy. We tend to associate happiness with the fulfillment of things that we want. I guess those would be our desires.
If we want some object, an event to occur, or even a particular person, and when it gets granted in some way or another, we might feel a degree of gratification.
Then some people would apply proportions to this kind of feeling. If we get something of greater value, which is dependent on popular recognition to which how something is indeed valued, it would also be proportional to the degree of happiness that one might feel. Like degrees of comparison in Adjectives:
Getting something Good would make one Happy
Having something Better would get another person Happier than the other
Achieving the Best would have that person be the Happiest
Sadly, the comparative degree would sometimes ignite envy and when expectations are not met, the degree of disappointment is also granted.
As much as how materialistic people are these days and how some people are unjust towards their fellow man, the only suggestion that I could think of for that list of tips in achieving 'happiness' would be to smile as much as we can.
A genuine appreciative smile actually has some sort of effect which makes those who see it lighten up.
And of course, that's only a suggestion. (^_^")

Not really.. it wasn't grammatically wrong. I'm no grammarian, but I can say that there was nothing wrong in the grammar at all.
So that's what you actually meant. Indeed, defining something like that might have this collective state of being content with what we are, but describing it exactly would probably be a mouthful as no one can be happy the same way as others would be happy unless they also believe that they would.
If someone would ask "Are you truly happy?" you would know because it feels right or it should feel right so you'd know? I guess feeling and knowing have to synchronized or be in an agreement within a person.
Yes, sometimes things can't be explained. That's why it's really nice to have an objective opinion from someone whom you can actually ask. Trying to figure things out by yourself, especially when it comes to emotions, can be a challenge as subjectivity is always rampant.
Priorities, another objective field to ponder on. (-_- )

hi ratyz! contrarily, i think happiness is a state of feeling. and we all know how feelings can be fleeting. that's why i said that happiness is sort of elusive. but, it's no reason to give up looking for it again. if we think we're happy, there's a possibility that we are fooling ourselves. Happiness is something you feel deep within you. More than contentment, it is joy in contentment.
And, how we are happy is different with all of us. One of the "rules" there is actually define your own happiness. there's the temporary happiness, which we get from immediate gratification, and there's the happiness that we get when we feel that all is well.
Your suggestion isn't far off the bat. I remember a chain mail where it said that a smile[of happiness] is infectious. It's a very good one actually! :)

hello again!
Was it really grammatically wrong to say I think I feel? I thought about happiness, but I felt it, so I knew I was happy. hahaha
What I meant was, we could feel happy one time, and unhappy the next. I think being happy is the emotion, but happiness is a state. Compared to inner peace, inner peace isn't an emotion, but a state. Also, happiness for me is joy in living, to be content with life, going with the punches. It's too deep to truly define. It depends on how you define your happiness. When somebody asks you "Are you truly happy?", would you think, or would you feel, to arrive at the answer? For me, I would just know, because it feels right. Yes, I would just know.
I agree, that each emotion has a cause and it depends on how we perceive the situation. I suppose saying you are happy has a certain degree of fooling yourself. The same with love, as you said. But then, why think about whether or not you're fooling yourself? You feel happy or you don't. You're in love or you're not. Sometimes rationalizing is over rated. Some things can't be explained... (:
Yes, define what makes you happy. But for the person with a lot of desires, I think it would be best if they are realistic with their desires. We can't have everything, so I guess setting your priorities is important in this situation. :D

I believe everybody should be happy too! I believe Life is a pursuit of happiness and that we should never give up trying to find it. We should also help each other out to be happy. The rule is right, if everybody is happy, they would release a positive vibe. Happiness is infectious!

I watched that movie too. But it was a long time ago...I remember feeling sad whenever he was rejected in selling his bone density detector thing. It was really inspiring. :)

hello orang!
i like your favorite! i think believing in magic isn't such a childish thing to do. Each of us needs to hold on to that child-like part of ourselves, well after we grow up. It helps us see the wonders in everything, and help us be more positive in life. :)

Hi Caprice the Happy
That is an excellent link dear. I could not scroll all through the so many pages on that one but yes, I have one for me - Whenever I feel unhappy I try to find another one who is more unhappy. Though it might not be considered a rule but it does help me realize that I am a bit better off than the one whom I looked up... and then try to help this person.
I know it doesnt solve my problem but it does give me happiness to think that I could be of use to someone - stand by him/her during the time of need... I think that is what I earn - some blessings and wishes that make my sorrow so small.
Some may disagree but I have tested this quite many a times and it has worked out right for me...

hello thesids!
I have to agree with you there. If I see that I have a better life than someone in the world, it makes me feel that I have no right to be unhappy. No right at all. (I am sometimes impatient with people who complain, because there are lots of other people worse off than them....)
It's very good of you to try and help that person be happy. We all want to be happy, and we should help each other out! ( I read your link and dropped a response there)
Good day! :)

You should definitely take the time to check out a few pages of the site. I find myself being more positive as I read through the entries. you are right: positive attitude will attract positive reactions. looking at the bad side of things can have its benefits, but it's better to be positive most of the time. thanks for responding! :)

I find the best way to be happy is to have a loving relationship with someone who is not just a lover but also a best friend, because the knowledge that you have someone in whom you can confide without fear is very calming, and leads to a feeling of inner peace. Also you should not deny yourself the pleasure of doing those things that you enjoy most, even if they are not actually that good for you. Occasional over-indulgence is a pleasurable luxury, and should be relished. The easiest way by far to find happiness is to lift the lid on your compost bin, get yourself a handful of the rich, organic matter teeming with life, and raise it to your nose for a genuine scent of what nature is all about. Absolute bliss!

hi tonyleather!
i love your suggestions! it truly is special to find that someone who is not only your lover but your best friend. I know I would be happy to have that! XD Occasional indulgence is also good! I see nothing bad in that at all!
And smelling nature -- i love that. We don't have a compost bin, but we have a garden, and I love gazing out into it. I love being there especially on a windy day. Nature gives one a feeling of inner peace... :)

I like #74 too, life is full of simple things so if you can find joy in them, well... you'll truely enjoy living.
I think also, it is important to share in other people's happiness, as there will always be one of your friends that is happy for some reason. So if you can learn to join in there then again, you will have many sources of happiness in life. =)
Happy living caprice!
