Computer and our civilization.

Modern civilization is so much dependent on the computer that if the computer fails for any reason, civilization is surely to come to a standstill, at least temporarily. Do you agree?

First and second world countries would now find it very difficult to operate without computers. At a very basic level, many people here do not know their times tables off by heart!! haha Most people in third world countries (more than half the population of the world) would hardly notice the computer missing! Yes, public transport would stop - traffic lights would not work. No airline flights. I've said it before - try living on a boat for a year or so. A great education on survival without mains electricity, water and sewage connected. It opens a lot of eyes when you have to get back to fundamentals. With knowledge and equipment it can be done.

Hmm. I don't know about that. Of the thousand million people in India I would make a guess that only 10% would be effected by the loss of a computer. Once you are out of the cities India goes back to the dark ages. Same can be said for China, the whole of Africa, huge parts of Central and South America and most of the Middle East and Asia. Life is very basic there and you have to live there to believe it. Civilisation is very skin deep in most of the world and they could teach us how to live without the PC.

I think not only first and second world countries but also third world countries like India will suffer a lot if the computer betrays.

hi, i think still India is not showing that much focus on using the computers..Now and then all goverment sectors and private sectors do use it., However it s not the total usage., still we should learn much from Americans and Japanese. If computers we really doing good to us then we weould had earned a lot o f money online if online jobs were really available and can make a living here.

India is also widely using the computers in all the sectors. There are large I.T companies in India. But obviously, it may not be that much comparable to that in the developed countries.

Yes I agree that moderen secoity has become depend on the computer and internet for so many things. if all the computers and internet were to crash, it would casuse a tempary shutdown. How the rest of society would deal with the situation woiuld vary I think. so there should be some back up in case it were to happen. like hard coppy files and back up disk ect.

I think so! A concrete example when Japan had encounter such disastrous calamity , the gateway of internet was also a bit damage so there was a slow connection. Many of us got some trouble because of this.

So an alternative way should be kept in mind to escape any disastrous calamity like in Japan.

Hi Doctor, Yeah it may be so. With the automation process dependent on computers, the whole thing can go to an abrupt halt. In our workplace (information technology, research and publications), once a power interruption occurs, all computers go out and the work flow stops. We get nothing to do but go out of our office and stare at the scenery or read printed books or magazines. If pressed for time, the clacking of an old typewriter or two may be heard just like the old times.

Yes, we as a civilization are totally dependant on computers. If the satelite blew up we would be cooked. Banks would be in trouble, businesses would be hurt, Wall Street-OUCH!, schedules and messages wouldn't get through, trains, planes would not work nor cars now days. It would be awful.

Certianly great parts of our world will come to a stand still, 0f our communication systems only carrier pigeons are not controled by computers.

We have seen the 2K panic and have passed it. So there is nothing to even think about a massive computer failure. There are backup systems and those will come into picture. The worst, as you say, is that there will be some disruption.

I think that computers have touched so much in our lives. it would certainly make a great impact if the computer was not to be. the information we so readily receive would need a new way to be processed. it would have to slow down how we function for at least a while.

I absolutely agree with your statement here. So much, even our daily management, like our financial records, and bill pay, and all other stuff are greatly depend on computer. What if the computer, or all the computer fails at the same moment, would everything will be fail at the same moment?

We have all become androids of some sort. I know what you mean. If the technology broke down than we would all be lost. We wouldn't know what to do. And besides, computers run pretty much everything these days. We wouldn't be able to access our cell phones, our online bank accounts or anything else that is controlled by computers.

True and like most things today convenience would be missed if one is forced to be without. I am sure it can be a bit on a personal destructive feeling but do at times wonder if completely left without that somehow we all learn to adapt. Not an easy task but figuratively speaking though we cannot miss what we know we cannot get back.

Definitely. Computer is integrated in everything now and if computer disappear for a day...oh it will be a disaster. Just think about the Wallstreat, all the banks, all the factories....
