Just 5 to 17 percent of adults suffering sore throats have bacterial infections that require antibiotics. But when they see doctor almost three quarter of them are given drugs anyway. The report says that many doctors are still not getting message that excessive use of antibiotic is believed to contribute to the growing number of drug resistant bacteria. What do you people say about use of antibiotics in such minor cases when they can be treated with a dose of paracetamol and a bowl of hot chicken soup !

If you've yet had a sore throat, you know the awful bind it can put you in. My first response to try and treat it was to ingest some of the Vicks cold/flu symptom reliever. It assures relief from sore throat.

I agree I will use some vicks or cough drops. Other than that I let it run its course unless it's going to really affect my breathing.

1) 1-1/2 tablespoon (heaped) of freshly grated ginger (main ingredient) 2) 1 tablespoon (crude/pure) lime (or lemon) juice 3) 1 teaspoon honey 4) 2 cups boiling water Method: 1) Put 2 cups of clean water to boil 2) Peel/scrape ginger skin off, then finely grate ginger pieces until you get one-and-a-half tablespoonfuls 3) Squeeze the lime or lemon until you get 1 tablespoonful and put aside 4) Then place the grated ginger in a heat-proof cup and pour boiling water over it. Add lime juice and honey. Combine by pouring this mixture from one cup into another, over and over, until mixture gets ginger-coloured (Steeping). 5) Sip on/drink this hot mixture as much as you could safely bear, WITH the grated ginger pulp. Tip: Let grated ginger settle a bit in throat area while drinking Notes: 1)Check to see if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed before atempting 2) Fresh ginger and lime are useful because the beneficial Enzymes are said to be more abundant than powder forms 3) Use this tea/mixture at least twice daily (morning/evening) for 3 days and you will notice the difference before the 3 days ..got this from a website who's owner went to India and was told of this tea there, after having horible sore throat.

I`m used to doctors who never prescribe antibiotics, so I can`t really imagine that situation. I think that for something that can be cured without antibiotics it`s better not to use them, as, like you said, it can be worse in the end, and many people in other countries abuse them. Also, a cold is something that has no cure, so even if someone takes antibiotics he or she`s going to take the same time to recover.

I normally ride my illness out. Spending $150 to visit a doctor for him to tell me a antibiotic will not work is waste of money. However, if the pain starts hurting my ears. That's my clue to see the doctor. When I start having earaches, I'm pretty much done. I had issues with me ears all my life. I do enjoy a nice hot bowl of chicken soup. Of course, I would enjoy chicken soup anytime. Best Wishes!

I think antibiotics are not really good for minor cases. I only used them if i badly need it like in an instant whenever I feel like i am in too much pain that I cannot take my sore throats anymore, i take a capsule then I go check in other alternatives. My mom doesn't encourage me to drink antibiotics. They are too strong i guess, and may cause damage so better in a thresholding process.

I don't use antibiotics frequently,in fact the last time I did it was in December when my neck really hurt when I was swallowing, but usually when I catch a cold I use paracetamol;I know that the excessive use of antibiotics can have disastrous effects on the human body, and sometimes they don't even cure that illness because new microbes that are resistant to antibiotics always appear,so I do my best to avoid them and use them only when I feel really bad.

I usually increase fluid intake when I have sore throat and flu. But if things get worse, that's the time I will take antibiotics and mefenamic acid to lessen any inflammation brought about by the infection. Works for me all the time

People should learn how to treat this kind of sickness naturally by drinking more fluids or citrus. I think you're right that antibiotics could contribute to the growing number of resistant bacteria esp when not treated with the complete course. People should minimize being so overreacting when having one if it still in the lightest condition.

I usually dont go to the doc unless I have too. I have a sore throat I treat at home. if it gets worst than I go in. I was prone to bacterial infections in my throat and strep due to having craters in my tonsils. Food particals would get stuck and cause infections. I had my tonsils removed and no problems since. havent had strep in a few years either. I think you shld know your body and give yourself information. listening to a doc is good, but if you feel you can treat at home than dont go. SOmetimes the docs are wrong. I took my son in a few years ago because he was really sick, it was around Christmas. We went to the ER, he had a fever of 104. They said cld be phenemonia (sp) but didnt like to do x-rays on young children. I shld have fought. We went home and I gave him motrin and tylenol. I did a follow up with my doc a cpl days later, by then his symptoms increased and I wasnt leaving without an x-ray. She mentioned phenemonia again, but wldnt do an x-ray. i told her his lips started turning blue, hes sick do an x-ray. She did and sure enough he had phenemonia. Any longer and he would have been hospitalized. Now I tell moms to listen and trust themself. if they think the doc is wrong push. Better for there to be nothing than actually something and you do nothing about it. I do think we over use medacine though.

for me it depend on how serious my sore throats and flu are. If its not too serious i would skip it as having those antibiotics is making my body feel really bad and i feel that it weaken my health too! Its better to keep those antibiotics from your body.

NO.Never. Usual practice in our place is that we take over the counter antibiotics. We usually use this on simple wounds, flu, sore throats or on infection that is externally seen. But, as I was studying as a nurse. We were always reminded never to take and abuse the use of antibiotics without proper indications given by physicians. Why do we need to ask for professional help. First, we need to take the proper dose of the antibiotic to fight the infection. If the dose is high this could damage our body. If the dose is low, this will not kill the infectious organism and will most likely will lead to super infection, an infection that is resistant to antibiotics. I think we should be careful in taking antibiotics. Don't take it if you only have mild medical problems and if you think you really need one, please see your physicians.

I usually don't even go to the doctor unless I have a problem that hasn't gone away on its own and has lasted over a week. I try to avoid antibiotics unless it is known that the problem will respond to them. My mother had antibiotic-resistant infection when she was in the ICU and it killed her. I don't want to contribute to someone else's demise because I helped bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. You are right, it would be better to treat with a bowl of chicken soup. I'm not sure what paracetamol is, but I'm sure it is better than antibiotics.

You're exactly right. Antibiotics are prescribed way too often and for things they really won't help that much. Use them often enough and pretty soon they will have no effect whatsoever. Then when you really need them, they are useless. I never ask the doctor for antibiotics and if he says he's going to prescribe them, I ask them if I really need them and if I have something that they will really work on. Unless he says that it will definitely help and it's the absolute best course of treatment, I decline or just don't fill the prescription. Sometimes it's better to just let your body fight off the illness on it's own and just us some natural remedies to help you feel better. Believe it or not, there is growing evidence that the use of antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers are having the same effect. They end up doing more harm than good, creating super-germs that are resistant to everything used to treat them. http://hubpages.com/hub/Antibacterial-Soap-Healthy-or-Harmful We end up "over sanitizing" our lives, thinking we are being healthy and in the long run, it's having just the opposite effect. The problem is that most people are blissfully unaware of these facts, so this is a really good discussion. It's great to get people talking about it and learning what's really happening.

Hello excessive use of antibiotic week our immunity system and if we use antibiotic for period it also damage our kidney. I have its experiance. For throats infection I never use antibiotic. Actually if you treat it when it is in initital stage you need not use antibiotic. When I feel some problem in my throat I do salt garlic and I use Tulsi, (Sorry I don't know its english name every Indian know about it)ginger and black peeper in tea or with water. Vikas also helpfull in nostal chocking.

It has been ages since the last day I went to clinic to get some medicine. Usually I just let it cure by itself. Perhaps it took longer days to get recover than meeting a doctor. But I am very sure not to see any doctors if it just regular sore throats and flu. That is how I am hardly fall in sick.

Antibiotics ought to be designed to train the human immune-system to fight its own battles. That's the real cure.

Our body has its own immunity defense system and so we can just take a rest and have a lot of fluid intake to flush unwanted foreign bodies that are starting to put down our health, however, we can not rely on our own understanding and old ways of treating ourselves because there are now new diseases that can invade our body which is unexplainable and so still we do not understand the doctors in giving us antibiotics. You can experiment by not taking antibiotics but just see to it to watch your body for the prolong sickness as this may cause complications.
