Hurt neck

Last week I woke up with a stiff neck. I slept with the window open and since it was a windy night that was what caused it. I was in terrible pain all morning and could barely move.I had to keep popping Tylenol all day. I had to keep my neck tilted to the side because when I would straighten it I would get muscle spasms. I even had to wear a cervical collar for 2 days! The pain lasted for a few days and now I am back to my normal daily routine.
Has anyone else had a weird condition that came about suddenly? What medical treatment did you have to undergo?

I have a back problem and if I move without thinking sometimes I put it out. basically I trap a nerve in my back and from that point on I get stiff.
I am not a doctor and you should always seek their advice first but I take one Ibuporfen tablet after food and that offers relief...in my case within a couple of hours. Basically trapping the nerve inflames the area and causes pressure on the nerve. Ibuprofen redues the inflamation and therefore the stiffness and pain. Deep heat or some other creams provide relief, although I have to say they do not smell all that pleasant.
Do be aware that Ibuprofen are not good for you, they do damage the stomach lining and can cause other problems; that is why you should always seek a doctors advice. Taking them after eating food helps reduce damage to the stomach walls and lining. I take the bare minimum.

I used bengay on my neck and shoulders. I was not too bothered by the smell. But I will say that the heat was uncomfortable. I didn't realize it would penetrate so deeply!
What usually aggravates your back? I have had back pains in the past and don't want to re-injure myself. I hope it does not interfere with your daily activities. It is bad when you are not able to go about your regular routine because of back pain!

I also tend to not care too much for the opinions of doctors. They are quick to diagnose and recommend treatment that does not work. I am very wary of going to the e.r. unless absolutely necessary. Usually it is a waste of time and money!

Hi there
I fell over on my leg and pulled a muscle or nerve out of position while washing the car of all things. It was a problem because I could not even undo the wheel nuts on my car without putting it out. Yet I could go to work and pick a 32 inch colour telly off the floor.
Thinking back I should have gone to casualty but I did not. My wife phoned the Doctors and he told her I should lay down on a flat surface. Well I can assure you that did nothing. The only way I could get relief at the time was to dangle one leg off a high stool.
What seemed to help me was that I started riding a bicycle and that seemed to straighten things out so now it is not much of a problem. Sometimes I do turn arwkwardly and it gives a twinge. Like I said in reply to the intial post. I take an Ibuprofen tablet and that is very effective at easing the pain in a relatively short period. I won't say it is instant or that I am right the next day but I recover quickly.. a day or two.
Needless to say I do not think much of Doctors anymore.
Thank you for your reply

Hi. zukichucha. Yes, lately my lower back has been hurting me. I am now waking up finding it very difficult to get out of my bed. All that I do is take some pain medication for it. I have an Herniated Disc in my lower back. It can be annoying at times when it wants to be. It has been causing me pain for almost two weeks now. I am planning on seeing my Chiropractor very soon too. I know that the cold air can create a stiff muscle because of the coolness. I hope that you will not have to go through this ever again. I know that this has been very painful for you. Take care of yourself.

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your back. I know how you feel because I went through this a few years ago. I hope the chiropractor can relieve your pain. Try sleeping on a hard surface. That helped me some!

I don't think it's weird, but coldness makes our muscles go spasm i think. i use my fan to relief me and it points to my lower part, specially my foot. the next day my feet hurts like hell as if some veins got stuck or something. i realized that it was cold. then i would put socks in it every night to keep it from getting cold again.my advice probably to exercise you're neck.have a nice day

I looked up my symptoms online and that is how I came to find out what was wrong with me. I didn't want to go to the hospital unless something was seriously wrong. You are right about exercising my neck. I now do neck exercises/stretches so that won't ever happen to me again!

If you woke up with a stiff neck and sore, you may have torticollis (neck tilt), namely the muscles on one side of the neck to contract, causing pain and stiffness,. Despite the pain, this condition is not dangerous. I'm suggest, take medication for pain relief and rest your neck as much as possible. Usually, the pain will disappear in 24-48 hours without medical treatment. If not improved within 24 hours, consult with your doctor.

Thank you for the good advice! That is exactly what I did actually. I rested in bed for the day since it was very painful whenever I moved. I also took Tylenol every 4-6 hours. By the next day I was feeling much better.

I am glad to hear it only lasted for one day! I am sure that was very painful. You must have been relieved when the pain went away. :)

Are you sure it was the open window that caused it? Thats sounds really weird to me. This has happened to me plenty of times, waking up with a painful stiff neck. In my case, it was just because I slept in an awkward position for a long period of time. I tend to sleep on my stomach, even if I fall asleep on my side, I will wake up on my stomach. When you sleep this way, your head it twisted to the side, and this can easily cause a stiff neck. In my experiences, I can't move my neck at all in one direction and it really hurts. Make sure you sleep corretly!

I also did not sleep with a pillow because my daughter needed it. That probably made it worse. Yes, it was the draft from the open window. I looked it up and this happens after horse back riding or other sports on a windy day or sleeping with an open window. I am just glad the symptoms went away after 4 days. They usually take about a week to subside.

Poor you - how painfull!
I woke up with what I thought was a stiff neck and that it would go in a few hours. Five days later it was still agony and getting worse.
Went to see a physio and he could hardly touch me let alone manipulate me so I had some acupuncture which eased the pain a bit. (I was fascinated with the needles sticking out all over!)
Anyway, long story short - I got back to normal - THEN! One morning I woke up and had a nice stretch and CRAAAACK! my neck went again!
This time I didn't wait and went to the physio immediatly and he manipulated my neck joints back with a couple of ricks and the pain went - just like that!
So if the pain goes on for days it is more likely a trapped nerve. See a doctor.

I will definitely do that is the condition comes back. A few years ago I was having back problems. Luckily, I was working for a chiropractor at the time. He did a few adjustments over the next few weeks and it relieved my symptoms. I always wondered how acupuncture was like. Was it painful?

Chiropractors work wonders on many conditions. My daughter had bad asthma. I took her to the office on my days off for adjustments. Right away I noticed that her symptoms were much better. After a few months she no longer had asthma symptoms. She might have outgrown it. But I truly think the adjustments made a big difference as well!

You may have a pinched nerve from sleeping in an odd position. I have woke up with pain that sounds similar to your's and it lasted a fews days and just went away. I was told later that I may have had a pinched a nerve. You should see a DR if the pain persist.
