People are really rallying around this issue. I think the boy had poor judgement, but like the majority of the posters, I really do feel his intentions were sweet and he should be allowed to go to college.

Aww...I think he should get to go too. He was going to clean everyhing up plus do detention. I know that rules have to be upheld, but it's not like he vandalised the place maliciously. It's his last year in highschool..proms are important to kids. I hope he gets to go.

What is the administrator getting cute about? The article doesn't mention what the school policy is relating to trespassing and vandalizing the school, but a one-day in-school suspension (whatever the heck that means) seems like it might be right. The article does mention the "School policy is that if you get an in-school after April 1, you can’t go to prom" so they seem to be following your experiences.

I dunno about the administrator getting cute about anything...and your right...there are probably stricter school policies where trespassing is concerned. I think he should be reprimended..but maybe not to the point of having the prom entirely taken. I guess if he was given special treatment..other students might expect it too though..it's a tough one. On one hand you want to take the side of the naive kid and on the other, there are rules. I would hate to be the administrator in that situation.

Although I think it's a great gesture, and it's unfortunate that he is facing this punishment, I think I agree with the administrator here. Even if it's a little extreme that he can't go to the prom, it will serve as precedent for others that might be thinking of other gestures to top this one.
Anyway, I think he is creative enough to do something else with Sonia even if they don't get to go to the prom.

That's really sad! But it could come under defacing school property. And can you imagine next year? Students might spray-paint the building with proposals or cut the grass in letters, etc. You can see, I'm sure, how the principal may have been thinking.
James is very creative and romantic. It's just too bad he didn't get his actions approved by the principal first--our kids nowadays are not taught to check the rules, just go with their impulses. I'm sure he's learned a lesson and hope that he keeps that romantic streak.

I think that is sweet, and I understand how the headmaster could see by letting him off easy she could see other kids doing stuff that is worse. But what kind of punishment is an inschool? I dont think it will stop other kids from doing the same thing. I think they could have thought of a differnt type of punishment that would have more of an impact. I think he should be allowed to go to the prom.
