Have you tried eating food beyond it's expiration date?

I have done that in the last week of last month unintentionally. I ate a cupcake which was about over a week old expired. It was unintentional because I only saw the expiration date right after I consumed the whole of it. It actually still tastes good and there's really nothing bad happened to me after. I guess it is because it's still covered by the grace period when I ate it. Good thing that manufacturer's are giving a grace period beyond the expiration date indicated. How about you, have you also experienced eating a food beyond it's expiration date? How did it affects you?

I just finished up a jar of bicarbonate of soda which I used very occasionally in baking. Its best before date was 1999. There are types of food where I check (cooked meat products, mostly) but generally I don't worry too much about the dates. In almost all cases, food's either bad or it isn't. I use the expiration date to tell me whether to buy it, and which food is older so I know what needs eating first.

Really? Hmmn.. maybe on that kind of stuff, expiration date is not really a big issue. Maybe it will just lessen it's taste but still good to consume. Yes, there are foods that we should be strict on it's expiration date like those meat products you mentioned. We should really consume first those products which has a closer expiration date. Thank you for your response.

ehhmmm...did you try to eat an egg two months before you buy it? There is a nice word for it: Salmonellosis, not a very pleasant sensation to fell (unelss you like going to the w.c deedply). So, not let those bacteries eat you inside ;)

Yes, we should really avoid wasting food. We should always be thankful for all the food that we are having because there's really a lot of people who are starving and really needs food. You have a good perception. Thank you for your response.

my mom volunteers at a nursing home where she runs the tuck shop. she is always bringing us bags of chips (sometimes the odd chocolate bar too)that is past its expirey date which we always eat of course, since we dont buy chips too often (these are the mini bags) and nothing has happened to us yet.

Oh, many times. If it looks and smells OK, and it's just a few days overdue, I don't have a problem with eating it.

Yeah, I also believe they are still safe enough to eat. Thank you for your response.

Super markets throw out a lot of good stuff. If you happen to be waiting outside in order to intercept the food before it reaches the garbage bin, you can get almost all your food for free! My wife, who works a night shift, get lots of free stuff as she walks home in the mornings. The dates don't mean much. Often a super market will throw out old stock whenever a new delivery comes. That old stock is rarely close to its expiry date, especially with milk. On long weekends, food in the cold cabinets often becomes frozen, so they throw that out too. There's lots of free stuff just waiting to be rescued.

Yes I have. Most expiry dates are approximate. It's not like as soon as the clock turns to that date the food is no longer good. I've had expired vitamin water and it didn't do anything to me. It didn't taste too good though.

It's a good thing that we have been fortunate not to get sick after consuming those expired products, but it's really better to avoid it next time. Thank you for your response.

Unless it's meat or canned goods, most expiration dates are not critical. A food isn't going to be good the night before you go to bed then suddenly bad the next morning. Sweets like candy and some cupcakes (not the organic kind) will last almost forever. Sugar and honey don't spoil. White flour takes a very long time to go bad. Organic milk will last sometimes two weeks past its expiration date or "use by" date. I've eaten bottled salad dressings, ketchup and soy sauce years past their dates. It all depends on the food.

I see, yes I agree with you. There are foods that are critical to eat when it past their expiration date but there are also some which is still safe enough to eat. It really depends on the kind of food. Thank you for your response.

I think food expiry dates are well within safety limits as I have eaten out-of-date foor many many time. I wouldn't do this with any sort of meat though, as it can go bad very quickly and some meats like chicken can make you very ill. Many years ago, I worked as a salesman for a cake company, and many times we were given out-of-date stock that we could take home. There was never anything wrong with these cakes and nobody who ate them every had any ill-effects. I wouldn't eat if they looked or smelled bad though and it was usually only a matter of a few days or weeks, nothing longer than that. _Derek

Hi. Harold_ks. I have eaten yogurt when it was like, about two months past its expiration date. For some strange reason, it still tasted fresh. I don't normally eat foods past the expiration date, but this food, I will have to make an exception for. Any thing else, I just usually throw away. I remember drinking a flavored water from the store and it tasted really weak and stale, so I checked the expiration date and it has expired about a couple of months ago. So, I threw the entire case of drinks into the trash can after that too.

Yes but only two days...Bread for example I think in just one or two days have those green dark spots, it's really dangerous but I also heard that the chemicals in the foods actually make it good longer than the expiration date, but I'm not sure about it...

They're might be still covered by grace period that's why they're still good to consume. Good thing that it really didn't cause you any bad effects. Take care of yourself too. Thank you for your response.

Yes, i have tried eating foodstuff beyond expiry date such as chocolates, candies and biscuits. But nothing happened to me. Maybe if it's just a few days or weeks past its expiry date, it will not matter so much. But mind you, I have talked one time to someone with knowledge on Food Safety and she said that what i have been doing is "at my own risk", meaning, anything that could have happened to me after eating expired foods, the company wouldn't be held liable for it. Sometimes the ill effects would not be felt outside, but our organs like the liver and kidneys suffered in silence. Thus, she said I would have blamed myself only.

I have done so a number of times, more often than I would like to admit. It usually doesn't affect me when they're processed food like canned food and snacks. But there was this one time I accidentally consumed expired bread. I was hungry so I didn't notice the expiration date. Needless to say, the bathroom and I got reacquainted that afternoon.

@Harold_ks (1673)

Yes, when you love the food, you will really get tempted to eat it even you know that it's already expired. And yes, it takes a good body resistance to eat expired foods. I'm glad that nothing bad happened to you after eating that laddu. You have a good body resistance indeed. Thank you for your response.

You bet, I have. I am aware that there are expiration dates on food or anything we consume, but for the love of chocolates, I love to buy a lot and sometimes I cannot finish them soon. There are times that I don't feel like eating so it rests in the storage. Well nothing happened to me and when I ate the chocolate it was still in good condition. I can't remember how long has it expired but it happened last year. Since then I became conscious in buying. I only purchase the amount I can consume.

The preservatives in the food saved your food. If you saw no mold etc I am sure it was ok. they have a date on food so its out of the stores by then but not necessarially mean expired. Now milk to me when it expires it seems to sour quickly. Some items have a deffinate shelf date over other foods. Depends on how much preservatives the manufactured food has in it. When I make homemade baked goods or breads, I know there is a quick time we have to eat it as it will not have preservatives in it and will start molding after a few days.

actually the best before date and expiration date only mean that the quality of the food is at its best before the said expiration date, it does not mean that the food is spoiled. and thing is if the food is canned, you could get diseases like botulism, from frozen chicken would be salmonela, and last tip from your cupcake i would not worry too much it has yeast in it, to prevent easy spoilage. :)

Yeah, I have and it did not have any bad effects. There is a 30 day grace period in all manufactured foods. According to Discover as long as the food is well sealed, and it is not stored under direct sunlight and it is not moist/wet then it is good even after a couple of years.
