Outfit planning?

Do you plan your outfits in advance?
I'm in the process of losing weight, and I have a pretty dull, lazy sense of style at the minute. I'm hoping to reach my goal weight by the end of June, and am planning to use the summer to build my wardrobe and style sense, so that I can go back to uni looking a bit more interesting.
I'm tired of wearing jeans and a t-shirt all the time, but I'm hopeless at coming up with outfits.
Do you plan yours in advance? And how do you come up with them? I really need some ideas for shaking up my sense of style! I'd like to try and figure out my style before I buy stuff to bulk up my wardrobe, but how can I?
I'm desperate for ideas guys, so please help!
I've been told to try closing my eyes, and picking one item from my wardrobe at random, and sticking with it until I find a way to make it work. The only problem with that is my clothes are in different cupboards and drawers, so even with my eyes closed I'd know what TYPE of item I'd be getting :S
Another friend suggested picking something like a theme or colour, and trying to incoporate it into my outfit, do you have any suggestions for themes, or generally how to keep things mixed up?
Somebody else suggested choosing a style icon - has this worked for any of you guys?
I'm so lost, but I'm so bored of feeling scruffy, so please please please, if you have any tips - SHARE THEM! I'm desperate.
I can be really creative and imaginative when it comes to writing, or drawing, but when it comes to fashion, make up and hair, I'm a bit of a....whatever the opposite of risk taker is! I just tend to play it safe.
I can't be the only one with this problem right? So those of you who solved it (or are naturally good at this sort of thing) share your wisdom!

Take one day and drag out all of your clothes and lay them out on the bed or couch or even the living room floor if you have to. Match up the outfits by colors and patterns in ways that look good together. You do not have to 'play it safe'. Have a little fun. When you put them away again, try to keep them together as much as possible.
Jeans and T-Shirts are not flattering. Dresses and skirts are. If you are long waisted, they look so much better than pants, just do not wear long skirts. Make sure that the waist hits you at the smallest part of your middle and then make sure that the skirt is full. It will be more flattering than a pencil skirt.
Scarves can add color and can be used as belts or neckties. Always have solid colors to match your prints so that you can mix and match. Good luck. A tip for faster weight loss is to not eat after 3 in the afternoon...I lost 110lbs that way and ate pretty much what I wanted before 3. Once I lost the weight, I just did not eat after 5. I did not start out to lose weight...I just had a job that changed my days around and I realized I was losing weight like crazy. Several of my friends tried it and it worked for them too. I am still a normal weight after 25 years.
