Little dogs and house breaking

I don't know why it is, but it seems I have a really hard time training little dogs to go to the bathroom outside. It doesn't seem to just be me though, I know several people that have little dogs and they all have problems with house training. I don't understand why this is? It seems no matter how many times I punish (spank the dog and put her outside) for the act, she still does it! So frustrating. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

I'm no expert, but my guess would be that smaller bladders = harder to learn to "hold it". Small dogs also tend to have more problems with "excitable piddling" where they get too worked up and dribble.

Manbe you can try other ways, such as put some things that dogs like in there to attract it. This might be useful.

When we had our little Shitu-poodle, it was not that hard to put her outside, although it was quite often. She was not that hard to train. We did not punish her when she had an accident, but said "No, Bad Dog! in a very stern voice. and put her nose near the mess so she could associate the No with not in the house. That might help. I do not think that your dog associates the spanking with the accident. That could the ;problem.

I have four chihuahuas and 2 of the four have been housebreaking nightmares. I have no idea why. The only thing I have figured so far is that they need to go out more often than larger breeds, and that they respond better if I just speak sternly to them when they go in the house, but praise them effusively when they go outdoors. One of the dogs is a new puppy and she does very well, We used puppy pads to train her, and the older ones will use them sometimes. I don't really want them to, but it's better than on the carpet. They get better for awhile, but if I forget to praise them a couple of times, they are right back to their old habits. I hope someone on here has some new pointers...lol

The most important thing to remember about training any dog to do anything, especially where to use the bathroom, is to have patience. I don't advise spanking the dog, ever, for any reason. For one thing, it's not necessary to properly train a dog and also spanking, if done often enough could eventually lead to the dog becoming aggressive and attacking. Remember, patience is the key. Try to learn how the dog behaves when it needs to do its business. When you notice that it's going through its pre-potty ritual immediately take it outside. Done often enough, the dog will eventually learn that he is only allowed to go to the bathroom outside. When they learn this, dogs will let you know, in their own way that they need you to let them out. Training pads are a good tool to use to housebreak your dog. They are also handy for when your dog may not be able to wait to be let out. Or, when you are willing to designate a spot in the house for them to go, when necessary. Again, let me stress that patience is key. And don't get discouraged when your dog has mishaps in the house or when it seems that he just doesn't "get it." And don't get too angry or intent on punishing the dog when he makes a mistake. He'll respond much more and learn much quicker if you reward him for doing right rather than punish him for doing wrong. Just let him know in a stern voice when he's done wrong but don't yell. He doesn't understand the words you use but he does understand the tone and energy of your voice. No matter what, just stick with it and your dog will eventually learn the proper bathroom habits.

I think punishing is not the way to train your little dogs. Try to take them outside at regular timings. If u cannot allot time for this engage somebody to do it for you. Frustrations will not help in managing pets. You expect it to know what you want. But the poor pet cannot. Understand this. You will not have frustrations. You can also use pads.
