When you can't have something, you want it until you get it

I just had oral surgery and I'm not supposed to eat anything crunchy. And of course, all I want is the crunchy things! why is it that you always want the things you can't have? And then, when you finally can, you don't want it anymore! Has this happened to you? What was it that you wanted and couldnt have at that moment and when you finally got it, you didn't want it anymore?

Same with me when I had my oral surgery as well but the recovery was 6 months to repair my jaw and I could not eat anything solid and was so dying for pork chops. lol I find it the same with gadgets like cell phones as I am one to love all the latest and greatest then when I do it is like, oh well I have it and then only really use it to call. lol I have toned down quite a bit.

I used to love music a lot more than I do now. I usually listen to the radio more. I'm so old school.

I did fail to mention that I do hope you feel better soon. It dawned on me after the second comment and I though gee I did not wish you to feel better soon. Hope you are not in a lot of pain.

I just had to have the ipod and finally did about 2 years ago and barely ever use it. lol So we are quite the same in that regard because I love music.

I think that it is because when we can't have something it makes us hone in on just that thing. We are thinking about it, wanting it so badly. Or minds land on a certain topic and get it out of the way. If we could finalize it and just tell ourselves we can't and move on it would be okay. But we can't. We focus on what we can't have and then we start wanting it!

Yes indeed. And when our bodies are depleted of certain vitamins we may crave things with those in them.

Exactly. It's our nature to crave things we don't have. It's almost like a challenge to achieve it in a way.

hello Steph, This really made me smile,i remember each time i visited a friend/relatives confined/hospitalized and visitors bringing them food, and the patient can't eat those foods,so it ended to the one who's taking care the patient. (hehehe) Better bring foods once the patient is already at home and needs more foods for recovery.

I'm glad it made you smile! I'd hate being the patient that gets all the food and can't eat it. Such torture!

HI Stephanie Ann C: That's so right. I think we act like kids sometimes. Things that we can't do for any reason seem to be more attractive but that's just because of that restriction. We became obsessed of the fact that it's supposed that we can't do it that we can't get them out of our heads. ALVARO

Hi Stephanie: I haven't thought about this but this could be a good strategy to focus our brain on the things that we need to do, making this thing we have to do more interesting. ALVARO

In some ways, it's good though. It motivates us to do things.

The worst is when you do not want it any more! I was restless till I got my dvd and now there it is lying around which I have not used in days. Same is the case with cable channels. I will drive the guy mad till he gave me certain channels and then I will never tune in to them. I could go on and on.........

Exactly! It's almost like a childish thing. 'mommy, mommy, I want it. Can I get it? Can I? Can I?' and then we get it, we're like 'what's so great about it?'

I have a whole lot of gadgets in the kitchen too, vegetable cutter, electric cake mixer, potato masher, icing bag.electric egg beater...... I went in search of that electric egg beater all over town and now I can hear it whispering - please, please, use me

Aw. Poor egg beater. Use it, my goodness! It's dying! I know someone who buys all of the items shown on television. Just go ask her if it really works or not and she'll tell you bluntly.

Hello Stephanie, Yes this is true about what you said. It usually happens with me when in my house there isn't milk anymore. It is usually when we have potatoes in our dinner. And then we how full bottle of milk in home no one want It anymore. So yes It is happening with different things and then you get what you want you do not want It anymore. I think this is happening with everyone.

That happens in my home as well. Except, it isn't usually milk. It's usually fruits or something. My mother will be like 'I bought this because you were going to eat it and you didn't!' Then, when she doesn't buy it, we want it.

That's the worst! I always want dessert too, especially in a restaurant! And then after my meal which I don't even finish, I can't order any dessert. Such a pity.

I don't think so although there are some things I have wanted to do and when I start doing it it is not nearly so exciting any more but often still very satisfying

Aww...the human nature of wanting what we are not allowed..LOL. I wasn't allowed chocolate or anything with caffeine in it for a period of two weeks while I was having some teats run...I wanted a Snicker bar so bad I couldn't stand it. I would go into the break room and there it would be...shining from behind the glass.

I think that's just part of being human. Always wanting what we don't have, what we can't have, and what we shouldn't have. Specially when limitations are pressed upon us, then the need seems to be very great. It has been 2 days since you posted this discussion, so I hope by now you feel a little better. And able to have some of the crunchy delights.

I think most of us always need something to want desperately because it motivates us,it gives a sense to our daily efforts when we know that the moment will come to enjoy that thing we want so much, and after we finally get it,we're no longer thrilled by it;I guess it's a psychological problem and it's a good thing that we want something badly as long as it doesn't turn into an obsession.Personally I can't say that there was something I wanted desperately and lost interest in it when I finally got,but there are things I really want and I wonder if my excitement at the thoughts of having them will remain the same when I reach those goals.

You hit the nail on the head, my friend! That was what I was getting at! You always want things until you get them because the challenge is gone then. Such a pity, isn't it?

I remember when I was kid, my parents taught me fasting. I didn't eat anything during fasting and whenever I saw food I wanted to eat them. But after dusk time, when I could eat anything I didn't eat all, and I didn't want them anymore. I think when something is prohibited we want to do this, because of our curiosity.

Interesting. I guess if you get used to it so much, you don't want it anymore. Nice point!

Ha! I can say that I can relate in a way... I had gone years with impacted, painful wisdom teeth and had very little means to get them removed. My situation seemed impossible, but finally my husband and I were able to scrape enough money to get the surgery for me. It was difficult thinking about all the pain I was in and had been in for so long and how long I had waited for the surgery and wanted it... Then I finally got it and it was something I completely didn't want to go through anymore. Obviously. Healing wasn't even that bad and I wanted to be thankful that it was finally done, but all I could think about were the gaping holes in the back of my head, the sickness from the medication, the emptiness in my stomach, and general disgusting feeling of healing. Best of luck to you. It does get better soon enough!

At least you got em out and now you aren't in much pain anymore! That's good! I had my wisdom teeth taken out a few weeks ago as well. I only have 3 so that was a bit better than getting all four out. I ate soft foods for so long.

I know what you mean! When I had my wisdom teeth out I was told which foods and drinks I could have, and which ones I could absolutely not have. One was hot chocolate. Well for the next two days all I thought about was hot chocolate. A few days later I went to the store to buy some (I was out of the danger zone by then.) hot chocolate. I got into that aisle, found the hot chocolate, and couldn't seem to find that craving anymore. I left without buying it. It suddenly didn't sound that good anymore.

Hi, Amber! Yes, yes and yes! Exactly what I'm talking about! I love hoto chocolate though, I must add, but only with whipped cream. I know some people who put marshmallows in it but I don't like it like that. I also know someone who put a candy cane in it. I didn't like the taste of that either!
