We are Friday the 13th and I really fear this day. I had an accident a Friday the 13th, and I will not go outside today. 12 is perfect : 12 hours, 12 new moons in a year, 12 gods in Mount Olympus, 12 labours of Hercules... But 13 is a source of misfortune : the day Jesus was betrayed by Judas they were 13 at the same table, so even God is not safe from the number 13.
And Friday the 13th is a terrible day, the more unlucky day in a year. I am definitely paraskevidekatriaphobe -- I fear Friday the 13th --. Can you help me to cure my paraskevidekatriaphobia or are you also victim of this disease ?

Hi Topffer
I am a victim of positivity and allow life to come as it does. I do not worry about the date superstition and hope you will not continue to do so. I try my hardest to simply believe that when I am a positive mindset that only good things can come my way.
Generally I am not a lucky person, so adding negativity to my life would not benefit me. Therefore, I will remain as positive as I can and hope that my Friday is peaceful. It is almost 8am so I have a full day ahead of yet. So do like me and say HA, HA! It is just another day.
I do plan to go to the grocery store today, which will be pretty much the highlight of my day. Outside of that I do not have any plans.
Hope your day has gone well, and that nothing but peace and tranquil has come your way.

Hi hardworkinggurl,
Paraskevidekatriaphobia is not a superstition, it is real. My day began with a supposed instant payout which is still not in my PayPal account, a stupid problem with a bank account discovered in my mail one hour ago, and five minutes ago I gave a duplicated response in a discussion due to a bad internet connection today. I have also been scammed at Microworkers : I did a survey to download a text file proving that the task was done and the employer refused to pay -- I have lodged a complaint, but they often take months to credit these rejected tasks : my record is a 10 cents tasks where my complaint was accepted 7 months later... --.
@thesids: Excuse my curiosity, but why are you calling her "GF" ? I find 123 acronyms for GF at acronymgeek beginning with "Game and Fish" and finishing with "Gurl Fytrz". Is it for "Genius Factory" ?

Actually there are 13 lunar cycles in a year so there are possibly 13 new moons depending on how they fall on the callendar. That's where you get the term blue moon ( when the full moon happens to line up to fall twice on the same month )
Friday is never unlucky. It the start of the WEEKEND

See, you learn something new every day. I actually thought that blue moons were more common than once every three years. In fact, I thought that we had at least one every year. I don't remember where I read it, but it was also listed as an "inaccurate expression" as it was said to happen more often than it would seem. I am quite sure that Top knows what he is talking about, though, so I will try to remember that in the future.

Hi uath,
You are completely right for the moon : 365.25/29.53=12.36 new moons every year. Next years with 13 new moons will be 2012 and 2015 and last was 2009. We have also 24 hours in a day, but I needed some 12 in my discussion.
"Blue moon" : we have exactly the same expression in French -- "lune bleue" -- and I have never found an explanation for the origin of this expression, that we often use to say that something never or quite never happens. We also say, with the same meaning "every 36th of a month".
Friday is not unlucky... except Friday the 13th.

I am SO not paraskevidekatriaphobic. In fact, Friday the 13th is generally lucky for me. If I had been able to get on here yesterday, then I am sure that I could have found some way of taking your mind off any negative things you associate with the day and perhaps even getting you to enjoy the beauty of it.

Hmmm ... you are saying that my coming back on Friday the 13th would be a bad omen? Here I thought that you enjoyed all our encounters regardless of the date. I guess that I will have to do better to remind you again of why it is always a pleasure to see me. Anyone up for a game of Scrabble ...

I am really pleased to see you back on Saturday the 14th and not on Friday the 13th : it would have been a bad omen.
I had to go out and I have been lucky enough to have no accident and to not find a burglar at home... I know that some people think that it is a lucky day : many things are happening on Friday the 13th that never happen normally, and I am not sure I will ever enjoy this day, but I will follow your treatment next Friday the 13th.
What is interesting with this "paraskevidekatriaphobia" interest, is that I can start a new discussion every year and it will be more popular with the time : it has already three followers and I don't understand why I cannot subscribe.

I am scared of the 13th, whether or not its friday. :) And wearing silver chains. :) I am a typical cancerian topffer. Lots and lots of silly stuff in my brain. Of course, I have logics too. But slightest coincidence, and I run towards superstitions. :) And no, I have not yet found any cure. I just keep telling myself, I am a dimwit that is why I believe in this. :)

When coincidences happen too often they are no more coincidences, and I am not sure that we can call them "superstitions". I don't think I am superstitious, but I am paraskevidekatriaphobe. I am not cancerian but aquarius : I don't know if it has an importance and if I am "superstitious" since my birth ?

Not to start another phobia or anything, but I watched a movie that was all about how everybody seems to worry about Friday the 13th, but Saturday the 14th is really the day that should strike fear into everyone. It was a tongue-in-cheek movie, and it was rather funny.

Hello Albert,
I don't know "friday by rebecca black" and if it is about Friday the 13th, I prefer to don't know. I just receive a notification of deletion of a good discussion yesterday at myLot... My plans were to not go out, but indeed I have now to go out this evening. I think I will take a lottery ticket : it seems that Friday the 13th is only good for things where you have no luck the rest of the year. Maybe it means that I am too lucky habitually.

Hello Topffer!
Well I don't really have that problem as today I had a wonderful day even if it's Friday the 13th. I went swimming today and didn't drown. LOL.
Anyway I think you have a reason to be scared as a lot of bad coincidences happens on Friday the 13th in your part. I think though that you should start little by little in over coming your phobia. I think it's not necessary to hide yourself at home. Just try engaging in small and safe activities. Don't go on risky adventures without a companion to be safe. You do this not just on Friday the 13ths but also on Friday the 12ths. You can never be too careful you know.
Life is beautiful. Enjoy it. Don't let a number rule your life. Have a swell day.

Hello flapiz,
Maybe I take care of things that I would not have noticed another day, but anyone has to admit that an instant payment not delivered by PayPal -- my user name is now in the "been paid" list of the site and my email was good -- happens once every two or three years. I also saw that my bank put a check on an account when I gave it for another account : in thirty years in the same bank, it is the second time it happens... It has been done Monday, but I received the details only today. So yes, Friday the 13th are never good for me, and the day is not finished yet. I will wait tomorrow to enjoy life again.

Hi topffer
Couldnt they have a simpler word for this I almost started fearing this word as it seemed to be a tongue-twister
I do not believe in these myths... To me everyday is another day and it depends on how I get started at the day... When I get up with a smile and a feel that yes, today is good, it turns out good for me and otherwise... it makes me sulking most of it...

@topffer:
Well, yes there are some people who are scared but maybe as I am not a Christian or even studied the Holy Books that deeply, maybe I am failing to see the reasons... But yes, in Hindu Mythology too there are some days that are said to be inauspicious but I fail to see the logic - I might find an example from a book that I recently was reading - on a specific date they say, the blades should not cut any portion of the body... but if that is a serious surgery that needs to be performed to save the life... Should I take a risk of postponing it?

You are too optimistic thesids. It is not a myth, though some people are buying a lottery ticket or playing money games on Friday the 13th : things unbelievable the rest of the year are happening on Friday 13th. The name itself of this disease seems unbelievable.

Hi topffer.
What a large word... I'm more frightened to have to say correctly this word to somebody that the Friday the 13th itself...
I think is just suggestion, a phobia is a disease, but the symptom is just the fear not the external events, for example if you have Acrophobia you could be afraid of heights but it doesn't means that you have to go to a high place or even fall down, is just the fear, and the fear could be controlled.
If you had an accident in a Friday the 13th is just casualty, you can have an accident any other day and maybe you won't consider it as a bad day forever, but if is a Friday the 13th you become suggested that the day is the guilty.
All days have bad and good things, if you consider there is a good day (for example your birthday) you are suggested that this day will occur good thing to you, and you pay more attention to the good events, so you are convinced this is a good day always.
In the counter part if you consider Friday the 13th as a bad day, you pay more attention to the bad things occurred this day and of course this day is bad forever, but the bad things occur all days, maybe we don't pay attention all the other days.
That's my point of view, all we can have a bad or a good day any day, and is just that, a single bad or good day.
Regards.

Hello Vick77,
I am not acrophobe, but I have vertigo and it is another real disease.
What you are saying is logical : I am probably paying more attention to bad events on Friday the 13th. I have to try to be objective in the future to verify if I can have as many bad things happening to me another day than Friday the 13th. There is an accumulation of bad things happening on Friday the 13th, and today is not an exception. If I find days as bad as this one maybe I will be cured ?
Thank you for your response : I am always pleased to read you.

Yes I have vertigo too in high places, but this is normal, is our instinct avoiding us to fall down and get hurt or die, but a real phobia is a huge fear beyond our control and in most cases without fundamentals, I've seen people get paralyzed in a high place due to the excessive and uncontrollable fear, in this point you have a real phobia when the fear is grater than you.
Maybe if you analyze the bad things that have occurred to you in the past days, you can realize you have enough bad events to make the ones in Friday the 13th as normal as in any other day, I'm still thinking is just suggestion and casualties. What if you forget to look the calendar and don't realize today is Friday and 13th, simply you live your day as any other and maybe don't pay special attention to the bad events (and neither the good ones) is simply another day.
I don't know how this day became a bad day, if you are based on bad historical events, then all days are like the Friday the 13th, in all days of the year have occurred bad events in some point in the history (wars, atomic bombs, earthquakes, accidents... etc, etc, etc...) and the only day considered as a really bad is friday the 13th... I can't understand why, and this is what I'm saying is just suggestion...

Let me do an inventory for what happened to me today.
I started my day with the bad luck of meeting a huge friendly black stray dog during our morning walk. He played with Binne a lot but they rolled in mud so that I had to give Binne a shower. This made me arrive a little late to the office.
Hmmm, a good start for the day.
Then my boss gave me an extra job to do so that I was busy all the day - not too much time for myLotting at the office today. :(
Hmmmm, bad, Bad, BAD luck!
After work I went shopping and guess what? I found something I've been looking for 5 years!
Such bad luck I'd like to have every day!
Nothing odd happened during the afternoon hike in the woods. Well, except for the cap of the water bottle which mysteriously opened in my backpack, letting the water leak on my back. It wasn't too bad after all, we had 26 degrees Celsius here today, so the water didn't do any harm to me. On the contrary. LOL
And now what? I've discovered the green logo of myLot but today the green is not for me. I missed two weeks in April, so no payment for the last month today.
You have to admit I had a bad Friday the 13th. But still I wouldn't say I'm paraskevidekatriaphobe. My Friday 13th was not much different from a regular day. In fact, until seeing your discussion, I didn't even think about the coincidence - Friday - the 13th of the month.
Have you thought that maybe you are the one who attract the bad luck?

Generally I am lucky, but I get an accumulation of small disasters on this day. From what I read, I think that you were also a victim. Even the discovery of a thing you were looking for since many years is normal on Friday the 13th : things that are happening on this day are not natural, and many people here believe that they can win at the lottery or in a casino. So it is not a bad day for everything.
I did not made a payout last month and I am not even sure to make it this month : I am a bit lazy in spring and I have days with 2 or 3 cents of earnings at myLot.
We are saved : it is Saturday now and I wish you a happy weekend.

Although you mention being involved in an accident on Friday the 13th, how many other days where the 13th fell on a Friday have passed where no misfortune or bad luck befell you.
Couldn't it just be coincidence that the accident happened on that particular day and that you only associate Friday the 13th with being unlucky because of it?
Also, as far as Jesus is concerned, having 13people seated at his table is really irrelevant, since it wouldn't matter if there were 13 or 40, since his betrayal by Judas would have happened no matter what, couldn't this also be considered a coincidence?
IMO,if you would just consider how many times the 13th fell on a Friday where nothing bad has happened to you or anyone close to you, you would realize that there is really nothing to fear and is only another day of the year.

Hello jujunme,
Maybe I keep more in memories things happening on Friday the 13th, but I notice a lot of bad things happening to me at this date, more than other days. I have had a few car accidents in my life, and one effectively happened on Friday the 13th. Statistically, it is not natural. So, I don't push my luck this day and try to stay at home.
I know that the betrayal by Judas would have happened, but it happened a day when they were 13 around a table. And Jesus was crucified a Friday : another coincidence ? I don't believe that all Fridays are unlucky, only Friday the 13th.

Many people say that bad things will happen to them on Friday the 13. However, to me, it is just a superstition. On this day, when you keep thinking that bad things will befall on you, you definitely will have bad things happening to you.
For example, when you miss a bus, you will say that it is because today is Friday the 13 and attributed to it. If you suddenly trip, you will also attribute it to the 13. However, on normal days, when you trip, you won't think anything of it.
To me, friday the 13 is just like any other normal day. I don't even think about it.
TO cure yourself of paraskevidekatriaphobia, i think you just have to stop worrying about it.

Hello dream_ozn,
It is not so simple. You can say "it is just a superstition" if you are not a victim of this disease. When you see around yourself an accumulation of small disasters on Friday the 13th, you don't believe this. I cannot stop thinking that bad things will befall on me on this day. I will not only miss a bus, but I can be killed by a bus on Friday the 13th so I try to don't go out. And even with this, I receive bad news, have a problem with an instant payment at PayPal, a task rejected by a scammer, etc. I really want to stop worrying about it and cure my paraskevidekatriaphobia, but I am not so courageous, and I think that next Friday the 13th I will definitely wait Saturday the 14th to do a move.
Thank you for your response.

All my superstitions were cured a couple of years ago when a black cat entered our home and refused to leave. It's still here, more annoying than any cat I've ever seen, but it doesn't seem to bring bad luck.
Besides, over here Tuesday is the unlucky day, not Friday.
By the way, congratulations for starting this topic, we've been without it for too long (I'm afraid to type it.. thought about copy/pasting, but it feels like cheating, so I'll skip it completely.)

It is a good surprise to see you today at myLot, NoWay.
For what I know, only black cats with black whiskers are a source of danger. I had one with white whiskers who was totally harmless and unlucky : he has been killed by a car in my street.
Well, maybe black cats are a superstition, but you cannot call paraskevidekatriaphobia a superstition : with such a name it can be only a serious disease, and it is why I created an interest in "Medicines that concern me".

hi friend, I'll help you cure that phobia of yours if you will agree that both of us go under a ladder, no problem, I'll wrap my arms over your shoulder and both of us go under a ladder together, you see phobias could be cured if you are willing to overcome it, try going out on Friday the 13ths and see if anything happens. Ok, I understand your contentions and I'm really sorry for the accident. I'm not afraid of Friday the 13ths but I'm afraid to go out when it's nearing my birthday, well I was made to believe that our birth date is our lowest ebb, meaning that was the day when we were most vulnerable if based on bio-rythym cycles, and I had 1 or 2 accidents before my birthday, but come to think of it, one or two accidents against nothing happened or that one accident of yours compared to all the Friday the 13ths in our life time, makes it coincindetial??. What is really scary is that one miss we both die thing, so maybe that is where both our fears come from , just to throw back, what do you think friend?

Hello louievill,
I will go under a ladder with you if there is not a painter or a roofer on top of the ladder.
I think that not walking under a ladder is not a superstition, but common sense.
There is a lot of time that I have not checked a biorhythm : I was trying to not take important decisions when my biorhythm was not good. Prudence.
But maybe are you right and is it only coincidences ? I generally don't remember the dates of events in my life, except dates like Friday the 13th, and it is indeed not the only day when bad things occurred in my life.
All of us have fears that cannot be objectively justified, and I am always scared with this date : maybe the worst has not happened yet.

Hello cher,
I am really scared by this day since years. I always noticed an abnormal accumulation of small disasters on Friday the 13th. Fortunately there is only one or two Friday the 13th every year.
I was saying in a box above that to be born a Friday the 13th was possibly an antidote. I wish it is for your 18th year "baby" -- parents see always babies in their children : my parents were doing the same --.

I used to be afraid of Friday the 13th. I also would stay home all day. But it was not due to a certain event. I just knew the superstitions that this day is bad. I did not want to push my luck. But now I go out if I have things to do. I decided to be brave and not let the date stop my day!
