The United States' debt ceiling is being debated in Washington. I believe the democrats want to raise it, but the republicans say only after significant cuts have been made. I read an article from Politicususa saying social programs have not caused our debt. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=9&ved=0CGkQFjAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.politicususa.com%2Fen%2Fdebt-social-programs&rct=j&q=what%20are%20the%20social%20programs%20in%20the%20united%20states&ei=qhrNTeGbEMTpgQfnteCqDA&usg=AFQjCNEswmryhQMivj71d2I7nan7Hs5Cjg&cad=rja What I want to know is, how successful have our social programs been? If we have been pumping billions of dollars into programs that don't work, wouldn't that mean that these social programs have had a part in our debt problem?

Our social programs have been good for those that are unable to work and the elderley. However, it seems that more people who are fully able to work but choose not to take advantage of the programs. This is where the waste comes in. If these programs are to continue, our government needs to figure out who can work and make their own money and weed these out of the system.

I'm afraid the government would make a new department for weeding out non ellagable participants which would add to congress' insatiable appetite for spending.

Well I am cognizant of all the facts regarding the social programme structure in America persay .However I dont think there is any wastage in those systems because any country worth its salt need to think of teh less fortunate.I personally wished that my country had such a safety net .Granted I suspect that many persons who are in the safety net are lazy and could do better in terms of finding employment and reducing that burden from the country's pockets . I think its the fact that unemployment has reached record highs hence a reduction in the money coming into the coffers of the country and which would offset the expenses of their social program. In addition the manufacturing sector is contracting due to outsourcing is another problem affecting the revenue and affecting money available for debt financing

Not only in United States, but elsewhere in world also, people are going a bit too far in living beyond their means. I do not want to say that we go back to Medieval times and shun our Automobiles, and daily comforts altogether, but we can exercise some restraint. Why not live more in harmony with nature? Why not invest in building more sources of Renewable energy, and create jobs and industries surrounding that?
