i would suggest you to put a bootable xp cd in your uncle's pc and do a repair instead of formatting the whole xp and starting again
for why its caused

It isn't a big problem , just use your XP cd and go for the repair option , if you don't know that , get your uncle's Hard disk and connect it with yours as a slave connection , copy the ntldr file from your system and paste it in his windows folder and windows/System32 folder .

I ever experienced that before, NTLDR file missing and after I checked my hard disk, I found that the condition of my hard disk has bad sectors or the condition is not 100% anymore. I had to format my hard disk and reinstall Windows and other programs when I view the file does not exist anywhere and its size remains as it is the files.

i have experienced this kind of problem and i am technician my suggestion is remove and reinstall hard disk ide cable or try another cable sometimes the problem get solved if not
the only way is that insert a xp bootable disc and don't format the drive if your data is important to you just replace the xp
replacing xp is simple (but not available in some discks), when you reach the partition table press enter and select an option that not contain the word format (i said this because i don't know what is exactly that, one more thing it must bee appear in last of list) and press enter and press "L" button
all other are normal installing
by this you can save your files on system partition
