Pop music is just not as popular as the name suggests

At my school, only girls and lonely guys listen to pop. The unspoken creed there is that pop music is terrible beyond the point of being able to be called music. Half the people listen to rap and the other half (my half) listen to heavy metal.

I know what you mean about that name. I was scheduled for a Pop Culture class and the first question that hit my mind was "Is this class about music?" It wasn't though. Pop culture is anything that people chose in masses. I'm not sure what popular opinion there is here as far as music goes. I am pretty versatile and listen to a huge variety. Maybe it depends on my mood. What kind of music are you listening too?

Surely it is what sells that makes something popular? Rap is better than "pop music is terrible beyond the point of being able to be called music"?

Sounds like their is a mix of likes and dislikes and I suppose as people we do not like everything equally. Gosh imagine if we did though, wouldn't it make for a peaceful world, or at least understand that we have differences. Well I do not like heavy metal, but my son does and I love my son deeply but does not mean I have to like his music choice. I do like pop and am far from lonely, but then you know the girls you are talking about. Some of my friends like pop, rock, heavy metal, classic, etc. etc. and although I may not like some of them, I wouldn't exactly call them lonely. Popularity in music is simply what people choose it to be so you have your taste and others have theirs, right?
