My boyfriend and I came from Greenhills last Friday night then we boarded the Ayala Bus in EDSA way home to Pasay City. The bus that we have taken was just an ordinary so it has no air conditioned and expected that the doors are always open. We were seating near the door but at least it was on the left side which if in case that when somebody enters we won't be the first target of the culprits. While we were already at the Malibay St. Pasay City and about to go down at Cabrera St., there was this guy who just entered at the door of bus and talked to a guy who is seating at the right side but closer to the door. It was not clear to my ears of what this guy is saying so I thought he and the passenger are known each other and thinking they are friends. Though I have notice something that the passenger is giving his hand to the culprit which is not clear to me of what they are doing. But then when the culprits went down. There are other passenger at the back that are looking outside then ask the guy if they stole something. The passenger said that he gave his cellphone but it was cheap so it is alright. Then I asked my boyfriend of what really happened he just told me that the guy told the passenger near us like "Huwag ka nang pumalag! Akin na ang cellphone mo!" (Don't move! Let me have your cellphone). That was the time I only realized that it was the culprits who have entered the door. It was really fast and I told my boyfriend that I thought those guys knows each other that the kid was only asking something and the passenger gave what his friend wants. That is why my boyfriend told me that I shouldn't really seating near the door because usually that is the first target. I asked my boyfriend if what he will do if ever happened to him. He told me that he will give the cellphone right away because they are in need and that is the only way they can do. In a way they are pity but of course it is a big disappointment for having those people who can make others victim. I am thankful enough that nothing happened to us and we went home safely.

How I wish I know how to do the Kung Fu fighting so that I can make it to them. The culprit was just a kid and he is skinny so I still have the second thought if I could fight with them if in case I have my tear gas brought it.

Kung Fu?
now, if you know this kind of Kung Fu art i am sure that the more you learn this kung fu art are the more you will not engage into a fight.... since the most ultimate goal in kung fu is the reject or refuse a fight.... since kung fu prioritize to win a battle without fighting.....
and before that hold-upper make some moves, they just be sure that they have more company waiting besides you if ever you resist to their intentions....
but to tell you frankly, what you did is already a Kung Fu principles and ideas.....
Kung Fu fights only in a no escape situations.

Thank you for that idea Mantis. That is really more hard usually because you would know that suspects has their smart tactics. So nothing really you can do but the best is to give up your things. The worst thing is that they are becoming used to it.

i have also experienced this kind of happening on a jeepney. I was texting my friend and i did not know that a man was already observing me. When i went down the jeep, he grabbed my bag and got my phone then the jeep sped away. I was very lonely because that phone was the gift of my sister. My lesson is not to buy expensive phones or not bring these high end phones if out in public.

To add it up we should be really avoid using cellphones when we are in public places. Well I often doing that as well but then good thing it never happened to me. But next time whatever happens I would not use my cellphone even if that is already ringing. Times are hard nowadays.

Hello METATRONIK,
THe answer is simple: BRING OLD TYPES OF CELLPHONES with you instead of the new models. once i have my old phone fix, i would definitely have that around in my pocket when ever am around and have the MYPHONE stays home.old mobile phones are cheaper to buy and use it instead of the new one.
If you love your new model so much, then leave it at home. most specially if you're in the Metro Cities. i doubt that would never happened to you, if you're tired and went on the front bus with out you knowing chances of you getting rob is high. and keep the money on all sides of your body.

That is the reason why I am not bringing my Samsung anymore instead I am just bringing the cherry mobile.
My sister in law have encountered the bubble gum modus operandi already wherein she was distracted by the strange guys then while she was being distracted there is another person who is doing something on her bag already until they were able to get the cellphone. I remember the time when our way was in Ortigas, I was boarding the Air conditioned bus and seated at the second row right side. When we were around Ortigas that is almost near the EDSA Shrine there are people that are going down already then when the driver started to drive again I was surprised when he asked if no one of us harmed by the culprits. Then the other passengers at the back are talking to each other already of what happened and good thing the culprits failed to do something strange.
I remember the time when I was still working in the office every time I got my salary I am also placing it on my underwear. I just hope that there must be invention of underwear that has pocket or even the pants that has pocket inside not just outside.

it's very sad that Filipinos have come to accept that there will always be crooks and hold-uppers in Manila. I wonder when our country can get rid itself of people like these. Sure, there is poverty to blame but a lot of people are poor but they dont do these kinds of bad things. the news is very depressing because it is always filled with corruption, murder and evil acts of poor people who then blame the govt for their situation when they should really blame themselves.

The sad thing here it is becoming very normal nowadays that often times the victims can't fight for it and the suspects are always succeeding. I just hope there are many ways on how to prevent those culprits. Because no matter it is day time, night time or even late night it is still the same.

Hey there Metratonik! I am also from the Philippines and I find myself not really surprised about the whole situation that you saw. It is only to be expected in Manila. Good thing I don't ride public transportations since there is no need for me to have it because the university I study at is only near and not much of a place of crime. I guess. :D
I want to thank you for posting this discussion. Now I have a idea about the first target options of the culprits. It's really scary to be a victim especially if you are a girl. So far I haven't experienced any kidnapping or robbery or rape. Thank God I still haven't and hoping I never will.

Really where do you study? I often ride buses and before when I came from work I am riding buses every late night so it is kinda scary and I'm glad that it was been always safe. I really thank God for always protecting me from all harms and that is actually my prayer every time I am going to the mass. Our place here in Pasay has many culprits. Sometimes our maid were fooled by the strange guy to the extent that her mobile phone was mobbed. Well I guess it is because she is talking to the strangers to the extent that she trusted it already. They are really targeting those people who has an innocent look that could be easily fooled.

in my own opinion, you simply knows the basics of self-defense, and that incidence is very common in Manila.
If you give them what they want, just be sure that the item that you'll give is genuine or else ... if it is only fake or tampered item, they will get angry and they will come back to you immediately and have another bad request to claim...

Or worst case scenario they will even kill you.
You mean even the simple basic self defense can do if in case it will happen to me? (*knock on wood*).
