We have a physical organ called BRAIN, We speak of it's workings as MIND. So, which is it truly. Just a brain that opperates on chemicals induced by stimuli or a mind that can look to the past, present and future, contemplate beauty and pain at the same moment and even the end of itself finally at death.
Think a moment, does your liver contemplate it's own demise? Do your eyes choose what you aim them at? Does your stomach consider what the outcome of that bannana split will mean to your hips?
What makes the brain different?

What makes the brain different from all of the other organs in the body?
It is simply because the brain is smarter than those poor dumb and deluded organs who just sit around and do what they are told... kinda like 0bama supporters...

I was wondering where you were and if you would return! How'd the move go?
And no fair, I was trying to post non political discussions for a change!
The brain is the boss, no doubt. But with some of us...the stomach is running the show! Much like those elitists that are running Obama.

Yep, I is back. The move went pretty well, although the ride was very interesting. 6 hours is way longer than I should be riding. It took a while to get things settled enough to get hooked up and back online.
Yep the stomach is constanly in revolt, making it's demands known no matter what the consequences may be, just like those filthy liberatals who will destroy us all, even themselves.
It is funny how politics seems to interfere in everything that we do... even when uit comes to non political discussions.

I'm glad you made it safe and sound. I understand about getting hooked back up. I've moved enough to appreciate the hassle you must of had. How's the weather there? It's cold today here! one day in the high 80's then back down to the 50's the next!
and oooohh those consequences! great analogy, the digestive sytstem and politicians!

"We have a physical organ called BRAIN, We speak of it's workings as MIND."
We may speak that way but that is not sufficient to show the same is true. What this statement claims is a crude version of functionality. No theory of this kind has been described that is without problems.
We can say that the brain is necessary for mind but little more.
In order to say mind is a function of brain we would need to show that a state of mind has the same properties as a brain state; by Liebniz law, that which is identical has identical properties. Yet, the mind has properties that are not possessed by the functioning of the brain, therefore function in of the brain is not identical with mind.
Also it is misleading to say we have an organ called the brain, since it presupposes that the brain is not us. Unfortunately we suffer from a misleading picture that has become ingrained in our thinking, that originates with Descartes, namely that of dualism, and gives rise to the notion that the body is like a car with the mind as driver. This I think is wrong. Mind/body is one complex

I should add that it has recently been shown that the human heart has a nerve complex that is associated with it, that may posses some sentience. This is fascinating as it suggests both heart and brain are necessary for mind, which is of course concordant with folk understanding of the matter!!!

That is fascinating urban, where did you read that? I'd love to do more research on it. (the heart being sentient)

Nothing makes the brain different from any other organ. We are spiritual beings in our true natures. The connection is made in the brain. If we weren't in our physical body, you would have an empty body some refer to as a vegetable. Oh, Eat those veggies. They are healthier than all that junk food. If it's processed by mankind, watch out. Natural from God is great. Plant that garden!!

This is a truly fascinating issue. I think that generations of philosophers an neurobiologists have tried to explain this specific issue without much success.
The only consideration i feel to make on this is just that even if the basic physical processes of the brain are simple chemistry, the complexity of the billions of interconnection between all the neurons makes the brain special. Its complexity and non linearity makes it unique with regards to pretty much anything else in the universe.
Furthermore i personally believe that trying to explain the human mind and soul in an excessively mechanicistic is at best reductive. All the feelings and the sensations can be understood in terms of chemicals, but the awareness of itself is something that trascend physics and chemistry in my opinion.
There is an interesting thought experiment used in the field of artificial intelligence and is that of the chinese room. It basically explains the difficulty of defining real intelligence. The experiment is this:
if a person that doesn't understand chinese is given a sufficiently complete table that associates to every possible question an answer (i.e. a program) this person could efficiently fool an external observer who has to understand if this persone effectively understands chinese, while all this person does is following a program without really understanding anything.
So a real brain does not just act according to some predefined instructions hardcoded in our biology or in our education, it really understands the concept that underlie those question that require us to act. It is conscient, it does not merely associate an output to a given input, and i really thing that there is nothing in physics or chemistry that will ever explain that.

Wow, good answer. I especially like the part...[i]but the awareness of itself is something that trascend physics and chemistry in my opinion.

I have taken a course called Biology of Behavior. I'm fascinated by how the mind works. I wish I could afford to become a professional student.
Since I can't do that, I read everything I can get my hands on. Currently looking into the various philosophical explorations of the mind/body duality.
Thanks for your response, and if you got more..bring it on!

our brain is one of our vital organ than we can not function properly without. It tells us how to respond to every action we encounter in our live, such as when we are hungry or sad, tired or sleep. The capacity of this organ is insurmountable we can not control the works of the brain. so, we are not left to our own demise without the opportunity to be ration about what the brain has put forth before you make any decisions. Thank goodness for our braitns, otherwise we would not be able to think and make rational choices.

There are some functions of the brain that we don't control normally. Like hunger or sleepiness. But did you know that there are people who have learned somehow to even control the automatic functions of the brain? They claim to not need sleep or experience hunger.
I also believe we can change our brains way of thinking. And the brain in some instances can relearn functions lost from injury or stroke.
And what is rational? To me it may be one thing, to you another. That is pretty amazing too.

As I said, the brain is an amazing vital organ that we all have and need in order to function properly. I wonder how I bodies know when we are hunger or tired if not for our brain? Since I am not an expert on this subject, all written is just my opinion.

And even those who are abnormal, how do the GET TO BE ABNORMAL? I'm glad you are normal. But the abnormal mind is the way it is, why? Why do some people hear colors and see sound? Did you know that some people can do that? I find it very amazing.
