First, i am not rich, we are even on a tight budget and every penny has to be accounted on where it goes. But last night it got me thinking that i am still lucky because we still get to eat thrice even more than that a day ,we still get to eat ice cream if we want to..i can still buy my children nice bags and shoes and quality things... and here i am thinking, there are children who cannot.. what if i donate some school supplies for them? before school starts? but then how do i get people to help me? how do i organize? i am really wanting to do this but i just do not know how to start...

im not sure. maybe you could put up signs, hand out flyers? get a couple of your associates to form a team with you? have the principle to put a box inside the office for donation supplies like in the grocery stores do with food? and put school supplies donations on it. then maybe the office lady could collect it each night and the principle could decide who needs it? ive never done this either. i just donate food in the boxes at the grocery at times.

it is hard to do stuff like that here bunny because people are not into it..if you put donation boxes no one even cares to look at it! much more put something in it. it is sad but it is like that here..

No man is an island. Your heart is good. You have a heart for the less fortunate people. Now that you have no idea how to do it yet. Research more. Survey possible ways and look for people who could join you in this venture. make a plan. List things you want to do for them. List the people or places that you could ask help. You can't just ask people to support you. You need to start it. Ask help from friends or family who personally believes in you and could lend you a hand without asking for anything in return.
There are many ways to help the less fortunate people. I am glad that you've thought of the children. They are the people of the future. They need more guidance, role models and support from the older ones.
One way to help these kids is to give them guidance. Not all help comes from materials or supplies. You can start a tutorial service for free to help the kids in your neighborhood or the ones in the public school. Organize a meeting in a park or wherever possible. If you don't like this. Ask your friends for their extra school supplies then give to the non-government organizations you can find in your area. In my opinion, whatever your plan is, you have to start it and make people believe that it is possible. Good luck!

Its nice to know that you have everything even though you have it on a tight budget. Its also nice to know that you are thinking of helping those who are in need and those who are deprived of the essential things of life.I don`t know about your country but in my country,India we have what is called NGO`s or Non-GovernmentalOrganisations.Many people would like to help the poor but don`t trust the government charities because of corruption and the fear that their donated money will disappear in the pockets of politicians. This fear is true. Therefore these NGO`s who have nothing to do with the government help people in identifying which charities they would like to donate to and then help them with the procedures. In this way people are sure that their money will go to the right place. If there is anything like this in your country then it would be better that you get in touch with them and then go ahead.

There are many NGOs here veejay, but there are very few who are visible but i did donate in an orphanage and was able to see those abused children, children who were left on the streets and being able to see them and spent time with them was priceless.

I appreciate your way of thinking. Its really a hard task to start. If you are meaning about orphans, then you can donate something to orphan home and if you are thinking about street children, then its very hard. I meet some kids on my local train. they sweep the board of train and ask money. Once i told one of them that i wish to bring his to my home and he refused to go. they are habituate with their current life.
have a nice day.

I also had the same realization when I entered the real world after college. From then on, I was able to appreciate my humble beginnings more. I am way way lucky than most people. From the time I started working, I looked for ways to give back no matter how little.
From where I came from, there are companies who would usually solicit for donations in cash or in kind. I take these opportunities to help by donating whatever is available. Our recreational group in the office also usually organizes outreach programs to the less fortunate. We have at least 2 to 3 yearly activities for this. It may be small but it's still rewarding for me.
Perhaps there are similar organizations in your place. If not, perhaps you can organize a simple outreach. One blog I was following did one. She just announced it in her blog and people started getting interested and actively participated so they were successful with it. Not all the people who joined were even her friends. Just random readers of her blog who just wanted to do the same and saw that opportunity to give back. :)
Hope this helps. :)

Yes that is quite interesting, i might do something like that, try to organize and make people join me..but i am still hesitant people around me are not that open to such ideas..
And it is indeed rewarding and the feeling you get after you reach out is amazing. Part of my job right now is to go to provincial offices and it part of the company and a government agency here to offer micro insurance to the marginalized group and when i do go to their places and mostly it is remote, i could see how hard their lives are..and being able to talk to them and being able to reach out to them is amazing.

I do not know how things work at your place but i personally go and donate clothes to either orphanages or to NGO's and they take it forward from there. If you are planning to donate school supplies why not start at your local school to people who cannot afford to buy supplies. There are a lot of children who would be benefit from your generocity. trying going to theses small schools in your area, talk to the principle, get to know which childern need help and they you can ask the priciple to distibute the school supplies among them.

I got so busy that i was not able to roam and get to know charities here that helps, i instead put the old clothes of my kids in a box and brought them to this orphanage where we usually donate.

Hi there, i admire you for that. I do not come from well-off family too but i am very willing to help people who are in need. I am planning to celebrate my 26th birthday with the Virlanie kids. It is a foundation that houses abused/abandoned/exploited/neglected/orphaned street children. I have had an opportunity to live with them for a week. it is a school requirement but i really had fun and i learned a lot from it. there are different houses and each house caters to people who have different needs. It is founded by a french Volunteer, Dominique Lemay. I have a soft spot for people like them(virlanie kids). We could help them by sharing what we have. For instance, food, clothing and other necessities... I miss the virlanie kids so much. I am looking forward to seeing them on my birthday.

hello jazel,
I am working with charities for more than 13 years now and it doesn't mean always that you have to give money for those charities.
You can render help or services with those charities depending on your passion and appreciation.
Now,try to check your area for those NGO who are running charity works so you can make some arrangement with your donations.
have a good day and i hope you can start your small deeds soon you will be enjoying that i am sure

Yes you are right uttarayan, i might take these words and plan about it. There are many beggars on the streets but then i do not want to just go out and give them food, some are not to be tolerated..but with children, it is ok i guess
