Hi,
I am a technology freak and I always check computer market regularly. I noticed that laptops are popular in last few years. They all have wide screens. Also newly produced desktop monitors are ALL wide screen. So I advise you to use a large width. They mostly use 1360:768 resolition. I think a width of about 1200 pixels may be fine.

I'm seeing three quarters of the mylot page just now, so I know exactly how annoying a large page can be. Windows still has a default setting of 800 x 600 and very few people actually change it. Now that scroll bar on the right side takes up 20 pixels, so your page should be 780 pixels wide.
Normally I would be in 1024 x 768 resolution, so that would not be a problem. But I hate left sided pages. Be sure to center the page so that it is always in the middle of the screen regardless of size.
Whatever you do, DON'T use scripts to detect browser, resolution, etc. in order to customize the page size. They never work!

I think 800 pixels would be fine. Though people use different types of monitors and set different resolutions, I don't think there will be people setting less than 800 (Of course there is one resolution 780, but they can still scroll a little.) 800 pixels, fit very well in almost all monitors. (Hope there won't be anyone who's using monochrome monitors or 14" monitors)

Also, people who are using laptops can view the webpage without much difficulty, if it's set to 800. (One user here itself is having 780. So you can consider 780 too.)

Well, 1024 as the default width is accepted nowadays. It is because most of the monitors available now can support this view. Also, with this width, you can place more information thus, making it more viewer-friendly. As a viewer, I would prefer seeing all information on the screen rather than scrolling.
