Jogging at night? In the rain?

dedication or insanity - jogging at midnight, in the rain

We were at a friend’s house last weekend for some gathering and it was a bit late when we drove home. It was about 11:30 pm and it was raining, when I saw somebody on the highway who was apparently jogging. My initial reaction is of surprise. I couldn’t believe anybody could be as dedicated as this. I’ve seen some people go jogging or running at night, but not when it is raining, and it is almost midnight. I couldn’t decide if it was dedication or insanity?! Have you seen people do this? Would you do this yourself? Let say we (me, I) finally decide on doing something about our (my) health, and decide that jogging or running is a (my) way to go, would you go jogging at midnight in the rain?

It is dedication.I can see if the only time they have to run is at night that they Would do it rain or shine. But me? I wouldn't even start running at night! Way too dangerous.

I guess it also depends on the neighborhood, or where you choose to run. Because obviously, if sickness wouldn't get you, some bad people might. Specially if you make a wrong turn. Thanks Sarah.

When I used to run, it would be at night. Not at 11:30 PM at night of course - but just late enough (8-9 or maybe even 10) for it to cool down (in the summer, otherwise running in 100 degrees of humid air is NOT fun and not something I suggest trying!!), and I also like it because there are less people out around that time, but enough so that you're not all alone (just in case something were to happen). Maybe this particular jogger has a weird work schedule (2nd shift, 3rd shift, I don't know). But I find two things strange about this. Who jogs on a highway? I'm guessing not a freeway type highway, as that WOULD be insane. But I would never walk or run on a highway (unless my car broke down on it). And myabe it started raining 1/2way through his jog, so there was nothing more to do about it. LOL. How is THAT for overanalyzing? (It was kind of fun LOL). Running is a GREAT workout and is GREAT for you! So good luck!

Haha maezee! I should have just come to you, instead of posting it as a discussion. I would have gotten my answer right away. It would have saved me the trouble of wondering. Thanks.

Nope, I wouldn't go jogging. I don't care for it. I'd rather work out in other ways. I don't recall ever seeing anyone jog in the rain at night, but I did see someone jogging at night before. Personally, I thought they were crazy! Even more so as they were towards the middle of the road. I almost didn't see them at all, but luckily I saw something bouncing up and down (it turned out to be their shoes). Good thing too, otherwise I might have hit them with my vehicle! Jogging at night (rain or no rain) just isn't wise. Not when there are so many dangers on the roads, like cars going by. Though if they want to do it, that's their choice, I guess. However, they may not live that long...at least not on the roads where I'm at as it's like a highway here. Happy mylotting!

Sometimes I wonder if they are really into their health, when there wouldn't be any health to speak off if they get hit by a car. Or slip on the road when it's raining. I think it's crazy too! Thanks.

Hi. bounce58. No. I could never jog at night, especially in the rain. This is too risky. The ground is wet, the sky is very dark. It could be hard for someone to see me if I happened to get in the way. Jogging at night can be very dangerous because one may never know whom is out at this time of night. I would rather to just jog inside of my home on my treadmill, even if it is midnight. I think that jogging at night is just a level of insanity.

I understand. One could take all the precautions necessary, like non-slip shoes, reflective clothing, etc. But it is still dangerous because of the type of people who are still out at that time. It is dangerous. And I'm with you that I'd rather be on a treadmill if I get the itch to run at that ungodly hour. Thanks.

One of my goals is to train to do a triathalon and because of that I know that I am going to have to first learn how to jog and then to learn how to do it regardless of the weather. So, I do think that I would jog in the rain, but I wouldn't do it in the rain in the dark. I can, however, see myself jogging in the dusk or slight dark because of the fact that it tends to be cooler at that time of the day.

I've always wanted to do triathlons too (in my dreams). Specially the ironman's. But my problem is swimming, not running. If ever I did learn to swim well, and I decided to finally do it, then maybe I wouldn't have any problems running like this. Thanks.

Yes, that is serious dedication!! I have a friend who will do the same - but biking - and he will go when he has the time - even if it is raining. The guy internalizes everything and going out for a long bike ride let's him let off some steam (that's what he says anyway). I used to love running/jogging in the wee hours of the morning at our local college when it was foggy. But I wouldn't do it during midnight (especially being a woman - for safety reasons - unless I was running/jogging with someone - and I like being alone when it comes to working out). And I wouldn't do on the freeway (I live in LA, are you kidding?!). The thing is, I'm not really a runner in the first place, so most likely you wouldn't see me out there in the middle of the night running on the freeway anyway - ever - hee hee!!

I think I've read this about your friend, about the long bike rides. I might be imagining, but I think you've mentioned him in a past discussion. Anyway, I've been to LA a few times, and I've seen the highways, and how fast people drive. I wouldn't be caught running there too. Thanks.

i guess if running was that important to me, i would be. some people go running every day, no matter what the weather (we are in canada, so you can imagine that some of the days do not provide the best weather!)

I've seen some of these people, aside from this one running at midnight and in the rain of course. Even when it's snowing or there's a blizzard outside, they still get out and get their running fix. But always when there is daylight, never at midnight. Thanks.

Heck no, I don't do anything in the rain. I hate spots on my glasses. And if it's cold rain, double that!

I've always imagined that it would be cool to be running or jogging in the rain. That I would be able to run faster, or further because I won't get heated or exhausted as much. But I've never tried it. It's cold.

Uhh...no...not going to be jogging in the middle of the night or in the rain. Now if it is warm outside and it's just raining a little...maybe..but noway I would be at night. I think there are alot of people that take dedication to a different level when it comes to exercise. Like a compulsive level.

Funny that you should mention 'compulsive'! As I would think that this person is one, if not borderline. I think safety takes precedence to health and dedication in this case. Thanks Jen.

I know that jogging can improve our health as long as it is done in normal conditions, but to do it around midnight in the rain doesn't seem a very healthy thing to do it,and to jog on the highway at such a late hour might be dangerous, but if that's what makes that person feel good,it's all right,I suppose it's more exciting to jog at night.Personally I wouldn't do such a thing, because it' safer to spend that hour of the night writing on Mylot rather than chasing ghosts on a highway.

Maybe you're right! Maybe it's the thing that makes him feel good. I just wonder what circumstances lead him to realize that it is best to run at midnight. And in the rain. Maybe he hasn't discovered myLot yet! I should have given him a piece of paper with a link to myLot. Thanks.

Maybe they work unusual hours, so to them it was half an hour after they'd finished work rather than bedtime? And loads of serious runners would rather run in (light) rain - it keeps them cool. So no, I don't think it's particularly odd. Though I wouldn't do it myself...

I would think that if your work doesn't let you get off until almost midnight, and you're a serious runner, you'd find time to run during the day before work. But I guess from this person I saw, it isn't odd for them. I wouldn't do it myself either. Thanks.

You can easily distinguise runners or joggers here. They often wear the reflectorize clothing. So, I'm sure that he was just exercising. I've experienced running around in the rain when I was a kid, but not lately, and not for exercising. Thanks for responding.
