The only two human nature I can think of that produces cruelty I can think of is greed and lust. Both are strong and difficult to overcome.

I really don't believe that cruelty is a basic instinct. Basic instincts rule on survival and cruelty only hurts us. The cause of cruelty, I believe, roots down to ego. The effects are visible all around us: poverty, war, etc. It begins with the false idea that someone can be better or worse than someone else.

Personally, I don't think that we're born cruel, or that we're born evil. These instincts are things that we acquire, something that we learn. The environment that we grow up (our family, our home, our friends, etc) will affect whether our instincts will good or bad. This is what I think. I believe that we are born with somethings already within us (such as eat when hungry), but instincts are things that we learn and acquire with time.

It is the sin in us that cause us to be cruel. I read recently and i see the truth in the following statement: Any sin committed can be committed by anyone given the right provocation. So lest we judge, be thankful we are not placed into those provocations. We are all alike. Fallen. Don't be quick to say no that you will never be like this. Pray that such provocations do not come your way and hold on to God.

i think human being's desire causes those cruel things happended in some extent.for a small example,one child often robbed his friends of toys that he want to own himself.when that situation,the child will do some cruel things with his friend.even if that case is a small thing,i think it has clearly told me that where is the original of human's cruel.but i don't totally deney people's desire.sometimes the desire could prompt some new and good things come out.so i only concluded that desire is one of the reason for human being acts in a cruel aspects.ther are still many reson lead to it.anyone couldn't completely answer this question.because human beings itself is so complex and changable.
