Many Nonsense Discussions!

We start discussions and of course if we start a discussion, we want other myLot users to respond and get the discussion going. We want to have as many responses as possible. But, admit or not, sometimes the discussion we think that would be hit ends up being answered by 1 to 3 people - or even worse, none.
So, what exactly is the key to make people want to respond to your discussion?
I think the first one is the title. It's the very first thing people are going to see. Some people will ask a question and that's all. People will see the title and they answer without reading the discussion further because they think they know everything.
The next thing, of course, is the content. A lot of people here think like put one sentence as your body of discussion and you're done. Many people hate responding to very short discussions that makes no sense. Be careful though because not everyone likes very long discussions. It tends to bore people - to bore us.
Sometimes, though, there are discussions that got too many responses due to unknown reasons. Maybe because it's pretty funny and intriguing.
But all I can say is this: People hate nonsense things. Even those who make nonsense hate nonsense. Try to put some effort guys! You'll earn faster and better if you do this.
What do you think guys? How do you pull off a discussion that wins when it comes to responses? And what advice can you give to those starting nonsense things? I don't want to fight with anyone but try to show more interest in myLot.

Hi,
I liked your discussion topic and also your lines: 'But all I can say is this: People hate nonsense things. Even those who make nonsense hate nonsense.'
Even I have noticed that most of the discussion that we start doesn't get enough replies. First and foremost reason might be that we don't have enough friends in mylot- I say that from my experience. Once I had a very few friends and at that time- almost all my discussions had poor responses.
But when I made many friends, the exposure of my discussions hieghtened. Because meny mylotters tend to go to the tab 'Discussions my friends started'. Another important factor is to keep on commenting on all your responses so that it remains on top of the list always.
Rest of the factors are as you said. And sometimes some nonsense stuff do attract many people- it's man's habit to poke his nose in ares that are a little out of the way.
Happy mylotting.
Regards,
Ajth.

I am facing the same dilemma now...I don't have many friends and my topics seemed uninteresting for others...how did you win many friends here?Is time also a factor in gaining a lot of friends? I'm kind of hesitant to do "request friends".
I might look so desperate if I request some mylotters to be my friends.

hello bannybanzie!
It's quite difficult to predict which topic would be a hit here in mylot.
I am new here, so please "spare me the rod" if I don't win many responses from mylotters.
For me, this is like groping in the shadow...what seems interesting for me may not be appealing to others. So, I guess I'll just put extra effort in whatever I'll post here and enjoy the freedom of expression!

Anyway, that's quite a good advice from an expert like you!I do appreciate the help coming from people like you.
I am still trying to get in the mainstream...for now, I feel that I am still a nuisance here...any advice on how to survive here?

Who decides what is 'nonsense'?
Many here enjoy discussing politics and religion while for others that is not their idea of fun. Some start the most enjoyabe discussions with just one interesting line.
As always we have a choice here on myLot. We can pareticipate wherever we want to and decide for ourselves where we want to leave our responses and comments. I think that a lot depends on our mood at the time that we are here. Some days we need a distraction therefore a fun topic is where we get involved while others we are in the mood to discuss a more important, complicated topic.
Remember that the success of a topic relies also on the user that starts it. If they post a topic and then just go off and do something else and they don't interact with those who respond, not only will they not be earning anything for themselves (because they earn nothing for the responses/comments posted by others on their topic) but they also risk that when they post future topics, regardless of whether the content is 'nonsense' or not, they will not receive responses because others will remember that they did not interact on previous topics.

Very true. And I still remember the day you telling me how to get good responses- and helped my way in mylot.

hi bannybanzie what I dislike are the one and two sentence discussions all practically alike what is the site where you cam make a ton of money in an hour without doing any work?wellit may not be worded
quite that baldlybut thats what it amounts too. I and a lot of others will not respond as we never know which of these will be deleted as a
repeat discussions.I hate it when I get a lot of responses but half of them never read beyond the title and just guessed at what my discussion was even about. I pride myself on taking time to make intelligent but intriguing discussions and search if you want to you will mot find
one of my discussions with less than ten responses and a lot of them with many more responses one one hundred and some so I have garnered interest.I have never had a discussion without any responses at all as I do not make fifteen in fifteen minutes nor one every day either.

It is hard for me to distinguish and or say something is in the lines of Nonsense. See I am very active and if I can contribute and get the discussion going I usually enjoy doing so. There are times when the simplest discussions turned out to be the longest running because many responded and commented in several of the boxes.
So for me I normally discuss people and or life but then I am not much of a discussion starter. Sometimes I see some discussion with a lot of effort in it and no responses in it all. If I can apply some quality and helpful content, I get excited because a bit later I see the perhaps 4 - 6 day old unanswered discussion with well over 20 responses and gets me really excited that I brought it back up to the recent tab and others were able to see it.
It does vary from day to day, but what I surely enjoy myLot is that no discussion is ever closed so all members are free to respond at any given point and time.

Hi Banny,
Very true. Of late I see more nonsense discussion than a sensible one. One thing I know to get response on your discussion you have to respond to their too. This is not a one way traffic.
Many new users do not get response here because the discussion they post is repetition of one that came some weeks or months ago.
I am that sort of person who is reluctant to respond to too short a post or too long.
And another thing I have observed is that people would not participate that much if the discussion topic is a serious type.

I have noticed some discussions with absolute zero response to it. That's just too bad. And to top it off, the discussion's content is very short. Yeah. it can also be boring but readers. Also, there are others who aways take for granted the title. The content may be good, but if the title has no appeal, then it is most likely to not get any attention at all. I think it's best to have the title as a very short summary of what the content is all about.

I think before one starts a discussion, he/she should try to recollect or try to search if what he is starting is similar to previous ones he responded to. The one who starts the discussion should more or less make it as something to which Mylotters could relate to or is interesting enough for everybody.
That way, we avoid having a nonsense discussion.

Yes it's true that it seems there are a lot of nonsense topic here. I see that there are 2 types of mylotters, the first is topic starter and the other is topic responder. If there is no good topic, then nobody will earn here I think.

well sometimes you tried making good quality discussion but it happened to be not the cup of tea of the demographics here, I know what the demographics here wanted but giving them all they want will be brain draining, I only want to make discussions I will enjoy, it doesn't matter if I will only get 1 to 3 responses as long as i enjoy it. Plus don't be discourage with discussions with few responses, sometimes they were better since its more intimate and its easier to make chains.

I did try to put more depth on the discussions by posting something which I think would make other mylotters think critically- ups and down of globalization. The problem is nobody ever responded..no ill take that back. I got only one respondent. Oh well..
