Today on Hugh Hewitt's radio show Rick Santorum, former Senator of my state of Pennsylvania and current GOP Presidential hopeful, made the ridiculous claim that former POW and current Senator John McCain, a man who was himself tortured, "doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works."
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0511/55140.html
Santorum has said and done many outrageous, over the top things in his career which is exactly why he lost his bid for reelection to the Senate in 2006 by nearly 20%, but this is a definite contender for the most idiotic!
Any thoughts?

Well its pretty simple here Santorum not tortured for several years. John McCain Torture for several years. So who is the expert on what is and what is not torture. That would be John McCain having gone through several years of it until he finally broke under the massive amount of torture that he received over those several years. McCain is right it has no place in being a part of our interrogation. Not to mention that it is against the Geneva Convention a thing the United States signed and agreed to follow and so did several if not all the other nations on the planet. Now the terrorist may not be one nations soldiers but they are POWs and should be treated as such.

VERY well said. I agree, we should follow the rules we agreed to when it comes to POWs. We obviously don't want our own soldiers tortured if they're captured and to me the argument that the enemy isn't going to care about the Geneva Convention doesn't really matter to me. It's morally wrong to torture another human being. We should never lower ourselves to the level of the terrorists.

I too am from good old Pennsylvania and I did not vote for Santorum. I did not like most of what he had to say and although I do not completely agree with either side here seeing them as both going too far in their own thoughts I would never disrespect any veterans beliefs especially in a public fashion such as this. He may have made vague apologies but he needs to make more.

I agree. It's one thing to disagree with some or all McCain had to say about the issue of torture but I think he deserves a lot more respect than he got from Santorum regarding that issue considering all he endured in the service of his country.
In case you haven't already guessed, I didn't vote for Santorum either!

Lets see who has a better grasp on the subject of enhanced interrogation and how it works,
Rick Santorum, a lawyer, politician, and political pundit
John McCain, a POW who was held captive by a country that wasn't apart of Geneva Convention, and politician.
I am going to answer John McCain.

I am getting sick of giving people protection under the Geneva Convention when they clearly are not afforded protection. My next question of what value are all the Geneva Conventions if nothing is done to those who violate it. Senator McCain was a Military man in a Uniform and experienced years of torture at the hands of Vietnam (twice a signatory of the Convention). The US followed the rules for captured soldiers and government officals. The people we are talking about are not covered by the Geneva Convention I - IV or Protocol I, II, or III. These people have no rights under those documents. The US is exceeding by far what we are required to do. Our Government has punished those who violated the rules, (Senator McCain how many of your torturers were charged and punished?).
The last time I saw pictures of detainees they all seemed to have their bodies in tact, being fed better than the troops guarding them and receiving good medical attention.
The political leaders need to look at the news reports of US POW being returned after a war and see how they were treated and then compare that to the detainees in Gitmo.

As I already said to Taskr, I didn't intend for this to turn into a general discussion about torture but I will say in my view it's immoral and the fact that others do it doesn't change that. We don't have the right to even hope our troops aren't tortured if we do it ourselves, do we?
Anyway, that wasn't the point of my discussion. What I'd like to know is if you think Santorum's words were acceptable. I mean, who is he to tell someone like John McCain HE doesn't understand enhanced interrogation? Such arrogance and ignorance is indefensible in my opinion.

Is this not the same Rick Santorem we Pennsylvanians came to know and not love? lol
I've said it before and I will say it here, his sneer alone was enough for me to despise him. Hopefully, these recent comments will allow people on both sides of the aisle to see that he is a jackass.

One and the same! I couldn't agree more about his sneer. I also wanted to mention a local radio host had said several years ago he knew someone who had gone to law school with Santorum. This former classmate said Santorum was at the bottom of his class and that he basically went into politics pretty much immediately upon graduation because he was basically too stupid to make it as an attorney in private practice.
And now he wants to be the leader of the free world...

Hi Annie! Santorum is a loser has been to begin with! These republicans will say anything, anything to take credit away from President Obama, you know, the one that was "concerned" about bringing OBL to his justice! They have publicly confessed to the criminal offense of torture to make their ridiculous point which has been debunked! What's absolutely astounding is that Santorum has zero personal experience from which to draw! Take care.

I agree Annie definitely idiotic. Who better to understand enhanced interrogation than someone who has them-self been subject to torture. It seems that some politicians have a real problem keeping their pants zipped and thinking before they speak.

Hey Annie, now we get a chance to agree on something twice in a row. Santorum is a freaking MORON. I've been waiting for an opportunity to agree with you on that ever since he started this stupid presidential bid. God help me if he actually wins the nomination. I think he is officially the WORST candidate in the primaries right now with Gingrich as a close second.
Now I respectfully disagree with McCain on the waterboarding issue. I don't think it qualifies as torture as defined by the Geneva Convention. I also feel that the other techniques used, like putting a caterpillar in the room or making the detainees listen to Nine Inch Nails, qualify as torture either. I also believe that while the information that led to bin Laden's whereabouts wasn't derived directly from waterboarding, that it was part of what got the information just as the popular "Good cop/Bad cop" routine gets information. You don't just pretend that Bad Cop is useless because the Good Cop is the part of that routine that actually nets information.
My opinion on it all though, is if you are against it on moral or legal grounds, use moral and legal arguments. Don't argue that it doesn't work. If it didn't work, they'd have given up on it a long time ago. Obama's own people have admitted that we got critical information from waterboarding. If torture didn't work, Obama wouldn't be using rendition so other countries would do our dirty work for us.

Are you KIDDING? Putting a caterpillar in the room isn't torture...EEK!!!
Seriously, though, let's keep the warm and fuzziness of our agreeing again going instead of revisiting the whole torture debate. Basically, you got and stated my main point here - Santorum is a moron. There's nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing with John McCain but Santorum doesn't quite know how to do that. As you know, I'm not exactly a supporter of McCain but when it comes to his service to our country and all the he11 he went through I have nothing but respect and admiration for him.
Back to the moron...lol...I swear I have no idea how a single person could ever have voted for him for anything if they'd heard him talk for more than 30 seconds. I certainly hope and pray I don't end up having to eat my words but I seriously don't think we have to worry about him winning the nomination. He won't even be close in his own state! He somehow got swept into the Senate back in 1994 in the GOP wave; I have no clue how he ever got reelected in 2000 but he sure took a trouncing in 2006.
