Ordinary yet extraordinary

I picked this plant from a nursery and it merged well with my garden. I had no problem taking care of it and what I pleasantly noticed was it was easy to proliferate it. Its cuttings can be grown and so too the flowers themselves give out shoots which again could be planted. Any plant that is easy to multiply normally comes under the category of 'ordinary' but for me this is an extraordinary flower. In a few months' time I hope to flood my garden with this flower. I call it cactus as I have yet find out its real name.

Hello!
It is a beautiful blend of different colours and multiple colours are making it look extra-ordinary. I think it does not belong to 'cactus' variety. It would have some different name. I loved it and felt that it was worth buying.

If you could find out its Indian name, I will try to buy the plant here in Delhi.

I did some search on the net but could not get the Hindi name. There are different varieties in euphorbia and this is euphorbia geroldi. You can visit the cactus section of any nursery and you will find it there. Good Luck

It is easy to multiply. Just see in kalyani's box the image of the flower giving out leaves!

Hi allknowing, this is a very nice picture of your new plant. Its called Euphorbia milii and is a very good plant to propagate. I have been meaning to have one of those but the cuttings are a bit expensive here and also it has some thorns so I am having a hard time finding a safe place for it away from my son. So for the moment I have postponed the thought of growing one. Yours looks fabulous, and once the plant is in full bloom, it really does look extraordinary. Good luck with it :)

Thanks kalyani. Nice to know it is known as Euphorbia. What is amazing is that shoots come out from the flower which could be planted. They just proliferate in my garden. Here is the image of the flower that has given out leaves.

Wow! what a great way Mother Nature has to show her procreating powers!!! I did not know this one about the Euphorbia. It is really so amazing! I am sure in no time, you would have half the garden full of Euphorbia, although I must say the colors are just too beautiful! :)

Yes I am planning on doing exactly that. Something that needs least maintenance but will add colour to my garden will certainly get my attention.

You have many lovely flowers in your garden. Be sure to remember that the sap from the euphorbia family plants is poisonous. I guess I had not realized about it being propagated from inflorescence s.

So far I have had no problems as I have other plants that have sap in them and I am handling all of them well. I know the names of most of the flowers that grow in my garden save just a couple or two.

That is definitely an extraordinary plant! I am not a gardener so can not really understand what you are talking about. I live in an apartment building. My dream is to own a house one day. Then I can have a flower and vegetable garden!

This is an ordinary plant for the simple reason that it requires least maintenance and can be propagated easily. What is extraordinary about it is that even the flowers give out leaves and this too can be planted. You can see the image in kalyani's box.

I don't think this plant is ordinary. Euphorbia is a very strange genus. It has small flowers with no petals that are born in structures called cyanthia that look like small 5 petaled flowers but what look like petals are really glands. Sometimes, as in this case, the cyanthia are surrounded by larger "petals" that are actually bracts. E. milii and its close relatives come from Madagascar.
This particular one is a fairly new hybrid. I've never known a Euphorbia to grow from inflorescences this way. When I saw the question in the Digest without the picture, I thought it was about a Kalanchoe.
If you live in a warm climate, you can get all sorts of different Euphorbias to grow in your garden.

This plant has been growing so easily in my garden what with cuttings and even propagation through inflorescences made me believe that they are ordinary. I had bought one plant and now I have over a dozen and hope to fill my garden with many more. It is not easy to get plants that need least maintenance and yet add colour to a garden throughout the year.
I have Kalanchoes too and they too are easy to multiply but they bloom only during Christmas time but remain on the plant for a few months. From just about a couple I created a full row of them as you will see in this image.
Gardening is my passion and I can talk about it endlessly if anyone is willing to listen!
Are you a keen gardener too?

Personally I think the dangers of Euphorbia poisoning have been exaggerated. I've been growing them most my life and I've never had problems, not even with pets eating them. You're supposed to able to treat the rashes by rubbing squished leaves of Aeonium lindlyi or Portulaccaria afra onto it.

Did you have a look at the flowers kala? Are they not beautiful. Considering how easy it is to propagate them they come under the category of ordinary but it is amazing how they can be propagated. They just proliferate in my garden. You can see the image in kalyani's box.

hik allknowing I have a hunch its a succulent but anyway its really
quite pretty and as you say its easy to grow which makes it a
great plant all the way around. I wonder if that could be grown
in a pot. I love the looks of it just wish I knew whats its
real name is.

That is a very pretty flowering plant. I need to put flowers and plants in my garden that do not require much attention, because I often forget to take care of them. In fact, sometimes I forgot so much that it is difficult to tell which are the plants that are supposed to be growing in the garden and which are the weeds, because the weeds tend to overgrow the garden.

Hi allknowing.
It's very nice. It is indeed pretty. I like the varying colors and it looks like having petals like heart-shaped. I will try to find one too. The problem would be, is that I don't have much space in our house and that we don't have a garden anymore.
Goodluck! I hope your flowers will propagate real quickly.

All it requires is the morning sun and watering - not much. It grows well in pots.
