When I think of a travel site, the first thing that comes to mind would be "pictures, and lots of it". Pictures give the readers the spark of imagination as to how the real destination would be like. We might be inspired by the pictures to actually go there someday and see for ourselves.
It would also be good if there's a detailed map/guide on how to get to that specific destination, and how much would it cost. Like, "..from airport you have to take a bus which cost a dollar, then take a boat ride for a few cents in order to get there. Once there, you can rent cabins/cottages worth a few bucks, and enjoy a wide selection of food at a price range of $$."
Something to set you apart from the other travel sites is giving links/tips to sites or companies that offer discount rates or maybe a cheap but decent food and accommodation around the area that you're traveling to.
Anyway, just write what happened on your trip(if you have been there) or write about your travel wishlist and how you hope it would happen.
Goodluck with your site!

How about build your site first and get those readers based on your site's content. Those are the kind of readers who will be loyal to your site and maybe regularly read and also share with their friends. Then when you think you have enough readers, you can ask companies for discounts that they can offer to your readers.
That's just what I think anyway.^_^

Thanks for the feedback, I think pictures is a must.
detail map and guide would be a great touch but I think it has to be a developing project because it would take time to compile these information.
I would hope to be able to get people to give my readers discount but I guess it is a chicken and egg problem. If I have a big base, companies are more willing to hear me, however if I have more discounts more people would be attracted to come to my site. How can I balanced this?

Well I am in the process of building the site, and just like to throw in some features, I hope at least to get the basic correct that at least some people out there would like to have the same features as I do. Anyway having discount might be sometime away.

I would think you would need to think like a traveler. What information about a place would you want? Special things places offer, price range, if it is kids/animal friendly, etc. What makes this place one you would want to visit. And if they are customer friendly too. Nice people are more apt to get repeat business.

I think word of mouth means alot in any business. If you aren't good to your customers word get out.

This is a good idea. Actually there are already several right ups about places too. I love to travel and whenever I plan I always look for something I could read ahead of what to expect.
For me, I don't like too much detail on its history, just a brief but catchy story so I'll discover it myself. I usually look for something different or memorable in a certain place. I want to be enlightened that a certain place is not just a city with buildings but also with blah, blah, blah ..
Oh, could you also please include the address or a link to see its geographical area. Also as a traveller, I wish to easily see hostels, inn, hotels ... an easy access to these with cool links will be great too.
Discounts are cool, but it would be cooler if you'll also give us several tips how to enjoy the place especially if its in a non-English speakers community. These simple reminders or tips usually gives me a joy of excitement that I am going for a good vacation or the place to explore is worth the travel.

I would love to have people would write something they have down in certain places and I would love to invite you to write something on places you have been to, but that is when the site is done.
Well if the site would get big enough, I guess I would be able to ask for discount from my readers.

Thanks a lot. I would love to share my insights about the places I have travelled. Just keep in touch.
I had been thinking about this plan of yours. I think its best also for you look up at different blogs so you'll have ideas on places or the features you would include in your site. Then later on you can compare.

What a wonderful idea. Well I dont know if it'll help you but Im thinking a forum on your site would be nice. You could read what other people did in different parts of the world, read about their travelling, about the hotels they went to, the food they ate. There could also be reviews, what do do and what NOT to do.
Some have already given some pretty neat ideas. Good luck!

Hi iwrite
May I suggest that you check out WAYN - short for "Where Are You Now" (I just remembered this, sorry didn't post earlier). It's sort of like a social networking site where people share pictures of the places where they have traveled to. Maybe you can get some ideas from there too.

One of my favorite travel sites has a lot of information and wonderful photography. It has traveler's tips and a superb links page for further information. Maybe you have some travel photos and you could get your readers to add tips. Good luck with you creating your travel site.

Yes, you are right maximax8. Aside from the file photographs, readers or those you have visited your site can also share their photos to promote the places they have been to.
This is going to be a great site iwrite.

I guess, u really have to think out of the box, but not forgetting about the basics whereby it's equally important too.. haha =D U can feature exotic places or nice scenary, or areas with lots of shopping, good food etc. BUt u have to tell people how to go, when to go, best time to go, as well as cheapest flight or any alternatives if one is going for weekend getaways.
Maybe u can concentrate on weekend getaways instead, because there are not many places available in that aspect. Many singaporeans are going to bangkok or malaysia, so if u can come up with something new, it would be great.. haha

I would look for wonderful photographs of good travel destinations. I would feature one or two destinations every week or so thoroughly detailing all a person wishing to go there would need to know such as attractions, accommodations, maps etc. I would like links so I could book from the site. Weekly features should include special offers and discounts; everyone likes those! Good luck with it!

Well, aside from eye-catching pictures and convincing write ups, if you're offering services, you should give the option of online payment. Very convenient and saves a lot of time for those who would avail of these services. Just my two cents though .

Important features for a travel site consist of destinations and prices. In order for your travel site to stand out, u have to offer competitive prices with the highest quality. Reflect promotion stuffs, discounts and even hotel bookings within the same site. MAke it a one stop convenient site for many people. U can do recommendation, have reviews, catergorized your site into different continents, for easy checking.

Perhaps you can have a sections for solo travelors to give them an option to sign up for any groups that my be going to the same location. I travel by myself a lot. When I am traveling outside of the US I look for groups with simular interest and travel with them. It just feels a little safer that way.

Write something wherein they can get discounts. In times like this people want something cheap & worth their money.
Also make the site simple & easy to understand so that they wouldn't have a hard time viewing your website.
Giving them helpful & reliable tips will also help make your site stand out.
Hope this helps.
