Are you using KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS? Which ones do you frequently use?

So probably the guys who made computers so great these days have been so tired of clicking stuff so they made keyboard shortcuts - and I love them for doing that. LOLs I'm not a click person too. If there's a chance for me not to click on something but type something instead, I'm almost a hundred percent sure I'm gonna use typing. I frequently use Ctrl+C,V,Z and Y which of course are for Copy, Paste, Undo and Redo respectively. I also like the fact that one great software - AutoCAD - uses loads of coded command shortcuts that really make computer-aided-design, well, really aided. LOLs. How about you folks? Are you using shortcuts or are you a "click person?" And if you're a "shortcut-freak", which shortcut do you use most frequently?

The reason keyboard shortcuts were invented in the first place was because there was no such thing as a mouse. They have been retained up to this day because: 1) They are significantly faster, in most cases, than using a mouse, especially in Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Database applications. 2) Mice can stop working and, if there were no alternative to mouse actions, it would be very difficult if not impossible to repair what went wrong. Besides Cut, Copy and Paste, just a few of the ones I use are: Win+D to get to my desktop quickly, Win+M to minimise all windows, Win+E to open Windows Explorer ("My Computer") Alt+Tab to switch between applications, Ctrl+Alt+Delete to access Task Manager, Backspace (in a browser) to go back to the previous page, F5 to refresh the screen and Tab to go to the next field in a form.

You have a nearly a full list of commonly used keyboard shortcuts. In the process I too learnt a few short cuts which I haven't used so far. Owling's list is good. In addition to the information given by others I use home, pgup, pgdn, end keys often. Ctrl+U, and Ctrl+B are used for underlining and converting to bold. Ctrl+arrow keys also help often in taking the cursor to desired position in drafting. In EXCEL I also use Alt+I for insert and Alt+E for Editing and with D to deleting cells, rows or columns. I am not much conversant with AutoCad although I used it some time back.

Owlwings ... I have two so I can fly in straight lines F4 is one of the most useful keys in Excel. It toggles a cell ref through Absolute, Absolute Row, Absolute Column, Off (possibly not in that order, LOL)

As I work most with the keyboard I tend to go first to the shortcuts rather to the mouse, it's just faster if I remember the proper function. Those are my favorites I can remember right now, sure in the office I would put some more to the long list: Ctrl + X, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + v, Ctrl + Z: cut, copy, paste, undo. Alt + F4: close active top level window. Ctrl + F4: close active MDI child window. Alt + Tab: Cycle though top level windows. Ctrl + Tab: Cycle though MDI child windows (but don't work everywhere). Win + E: open windows explorer. Win + R: open run command. Win + D: minimize all. Win + L: look computer. Win + F: find files (only useful in XP, the search is almost useless in Win7). F1: help!!! very useful in programming. Ctrl + up, ctrl + down: in some programming environments, scroll one line up/down. F4: open bookmark panel in browser. F2: rename files in explorer, edit Excel cell. F5: run the active program/script in programming. Refresh in many other environments. Print screen: copy to clipboard a screenshot of the whole screen. Alt + Print screen: copy to clipboard a screenshot of the active window. F11: some programs toggle full screen mode. backspace: go to parent folder in explorer (XP and earlier only, the crap of Win7 changed it to Alt + up). Ctrl + Alt + Del: the lifesaver of the unpatient computer user. Open task manager / perform a warm reset. Alt: highligh the window menu. In combination with the underlined letter, open that menu. Ctrl + E, Ctrl + A: select all. Ctrl + F, Ctrl + B: find. By the way, did you know that the classic copy/paste have older equivalents? Shift + Del: cut Ctrl + Insert: copy Shift + Insert: paste Those shortcuts are even older than ctrl c,v,x and are still alive and useful even in the most recent versions of Windows.

at first glance im impressed and laughed out loud.. but then you said your a fast typist that's why the system hangs. I beg to disagree. I think the reason your systems hangs is because you have a low tech pc. lol.

Alt-Ctrl-Esc for a quick KILL! OK, that's a Unix one. I wish Windows had that too! I would gladly kill any version of Windows that gets near my computer. Ok, I admit it, I do have another Windows box for playing games with my kid. There's a shortcut for almost everything if you search hard enough. With ten fingers, why do we need a mouse?

Ctrl C, Ctrl V, Ctrl Z, Shft @!%&(, Shft DEL, Alt f4, Ctrl S, Alt F. Initially it was tough, since i hardly knew any. When i started knowing, it really saved a lot of time. I hardly use mouse for navigation. I use Keyboard alot, and i think when we get used to it. We will be much more faster than using mouse. Happy Mylotting
