Is there any way to install windows OS without any CD/DVD drive? With no other computer or any hard drive? If the only option is the only is through downloading, is it possible? I already tried researching on it but I did not come up to any answer. How can I do it? Is it possible?

I have that problem on my daughters' laptop. The DVD/CD drive is broken. It can see a USB stick but cannot boot from it because this system is too old. Yes, problems beaucoup! What do you have running now - if anything? Any networking (LAN)? I think you will have to beg or borrow an external (USB) DVD/CD drive from someone. That's what I did!

Your solution, Petersum, is either to replace the CD/DVD drive (should not be too expensive these days and probably worthwhile in any case) or, as you say, get an external one (but if the PC can't boot from a USB drive, would it be able to boot from an external CD/DVD drive which is connected via USB?)

Sometimes they can boot with a parallel CD drive, but parallel CD drives are rare today, and I have not seen one since ten years...

The original DVD drive isn't available anymore since it's an old laptop. You are right that it cannot boot from USB CD/DVD drive either. Unless... You install win98 DOS image only. Then you can download a DOS program that will allow DOS to see the USB devices. Voila - Windows can be installed. It all depends on having a working DOS system on your computer. You probably know by now that I am a Linux nut. Without a DVD/CD, even Linux has to be installed from DOS!

YES. there is a way. Im a computer technician. and from my experienxes. YES. there is. But u will need 2 Window OS. windows 98 setup files and the other is ur preferred windows (XP) set up files. from dos mode u can install windows 98 after u have a win 98 OS u can then run the setup files for win XP. TRY IT. :)

The only real option apart from a CD/DVD drive these days is via a USB drive (or via a network). To do this, you need access to a computer which can transfer the Windows installation image from a CD/DVD to a USB drive. I believe that you CAN download a full version of the Windows installation package from here: http://emea.microsoftstore.com/uk/en-GB?WT.mc_id=IPMapping_HP but you WILL need an authorisation code, which will be sent to you under separate cover once you have paid for the purchase. I did not look further into the instructions on that page to see whether what you download can be run from the hard disk you downloaded it to or whether it has to be run from a CD/DVD or USB drive inage which you have created. Netbooks generally have factory installed implementations which only need registration. If, for any reason, you need to reinstall Windows, they will generally have a way of doing this from a separate (hidden) partition on the hard drive. If you want to install a new version of Windows, then it may be best to consult the person you bought the machine from.

The best method is to boot a CD/DVD image with a flash disk. The fastest way to do it is to use another computer with a DVD drive to prepare the flash disk that you can use to install any version of Windows, and WinToFlash. It is free and available here : http://wintoflash.com/home/en/ If you cannot boot with a flash disk, I think it is possible to install an image of 95 with dosbox and then an image of xp or seven.

Thanks! But it still needs another computer. Wait! I think I got it! But it is illegal so I can't share it.

Hey.There is an option for you. After downloading from the internet, copy those files to your pendrive and then set options on your booting screen as USB port as your first booting option. Then when you restart your computer,it will automatically boot from the pen drive and you can install your windows OS.This is a piece of information I got from some computer forum. But I really wonder if we can set the booting options to USB port in the boot settings.Try it out. Another option is download your OS files to another partition of your hard disk.SO that the setup will run from that. This you can install only if you are installing a higher version of what you already have.

All those ways really are a bit a hassle if you do it private. How old is your laptop?

one of the technicians i know before, they used to install Win OS (early versions) thru Norton Ghosts..... and it will triplicate to all of the public computers but be sure that all computer specs are the same in everything..... the only thing i know using only a 3.5 floppy disk to install Win OS is the version (Win3.1 or Win3.11)

Don't waste your time searching for answers, because there is none. It can be done by creating an iso file from an existing windows but that also would eventually need a dvd drive.
