Smokers, quit smoking immediately.

Alcohol has some beneficial effects on health although too much alcohol consumption is harmful. But smoking has nothing good in it but still it is prevalent widely in the society, thus inviting diseases not only to the smoker himself but also to others in the vicinity of the smoker. So my humble request to all smokers is to quit smoking as early as possible to make the world a healthy place for living. Do you support me?

I´d make a list of no-nos, my friend. I would stop using disposable diapers, I´d only use cars when the four seats have people, I´d stop manufacturing weapons and use the money in health, food and education. Do you support me?

That is so right, not to mention stopping usage of airconditioners and televisions when there's few things in them (ref) and when only one is watching. There is also stopping housing and use of paper for books and schools because they consume a lot of the environments resources thus, lots and lots of trees need to be cut down. How about coal mining, gold mining, hydro plants, nuclear plants and all the sources of electricity because they have great ill impacts to the environment? There's a lot more I guess. It'll turn us back to the stone age if we're to eliminate a lot of things that makes the world worst. Not to mention having too many people.. should we kills the poor then?

Wow, both of you are doing very great job, Marguicha and Laydee. I am fully support it. I am trying my best to start using the available resources in a better way, too. I really don't want to see my future generation have to go backward and live in the stone age era.

I think we could use our resources in a better way without going back to the stone age. I remember when a lot of goods that are now made disposable were then useful for a long time. But it´s true that nice people didn´t need SO many things to live as they do now. I have a keyboard cemetary in my house. They are inexpensive. BUT... Why don´t they make them a little more expensive and a little better?

No I don't support you at all. Smoking is a choice and if one chooses to smoke then so be it.
22 May 11
No, sorry, don't agree with you there. Smoking might be the smoker's choice but the people who breathe in the carcinogenic toxins have no choice. My whole childhood was spent in a smokey fug because nearly everyone smoked. It didn't matter where I went, there was smoking all around me, even on the top deck of the local bus and in the cinema or theatre, and behind the bike-sheds at school! I remember being very concerned even then, nearly 50 years ago. To make matters worse, my father smoked like a chimney when I got home, and he and the house stank. The walls, ceiling and curtains became orange with the nicotine. I clearly recall helping my mum wash down everything and seeing the orange water in the bath when we soaked the curtains for the umpteenth time! Most of my family, who are no longer with us, including my dear dad and mum, passed from smoking related diseases. If any smoker had seen how they all suffered, they would quit in an instant, and find an easier way to go through withdrawal!

Hi 163Mandolingirl, I agree with what you say 100%. Nothing worse than being a child and being forced to smoke others fumes. This post was aimed at the OP just to provoke a response to be honest but I have no doubt I will not get one from them

I quit years ago and who said I subjected others to my smoke Glad you kicked the habit too I just find that sometimes non smokers are just as bad as the smokers!

You bet I support this! But, how easy is really for the smoker to just quit? I firmly believe that cold turkey is the way to go. And second hand smoke is horrible. If you have smoked for thirty years or better you are going to have COPD if you do quit and die if you don't. It isn't easy to stop but it sure is worth it.

Genetic background? Interesting. I have also seen that most long term smokers take several tries at stopping before it really happened for them. I would think that the cardiac diseases fall into the genetic background catagory too.

DoctorDidi...I agree with you all the way...but by the same token lets take all cars off the road...lets close all factories...lets us not lite a fire any where in the world...lets us not use gas for cooking...let us not have nuclear plants in the world[ when something goes wrong with them] we not only have polluted environment but we also have most of our sources of food...and water contaminated as well! don't you think this is more important? a smoker my contribute to her/his way of dying but surely is not damaging the whole world! I see people that run every day [ for health] in a polluted environment with cars fumes all around them...and I can't see the purpose of it! surely they do not smoke...but I can tell you that they breath more smoke than been in a bar with some smoking friends!

I do not agree with you because cars and factories have some role to play for the development of our civilization but smoking has nothing to do with it.

I support the idea of quitting smoking because it may have some consequences on health. But I have also my opinion that not smoking is the main factor of pollution of the air. Smog from factories, acid rain, dust and so on are worse. Avoiding smoking in the presence of non-smokers is a gesture of politeness and consideration towards others. But smokers has their rights too, they are free to do what they like with their life (quit smoking or not).

Partially true regarding pollution. However, according to a new scientific research, there's also a little change in passive smoker's acetylcholine receptors, that is one of those nicotinic receptors present in the brain responsible for development of smoking habit, thus increasing the probability to open a way to being physically addicted. Now, reviewing your train of thought, logically we could deduce, that for example, if you have a nuclear weapon, you should have the right to test it whenever you want, thus disturbing other's tranquillity and health equilibrium. Hence this fact, you should avoid statements like this, smokers are always making a little contribution to harm others.

Hi hendarto, quit it immediately. If you can quit it immediately, I would think myself very lucky in the sense that my topic has compelled you to take the decision of quitting.

Though I support you, don't know how strong a support it is. I used to spread this message all around. But then some people around me started smoking 'just for fun' and 'definitely not addicted'. Well, it progressed and they can't claim the innocence anymore. I had been subjected to ill-effects of passive smoking earlier in my life but that time I couldn't control anything - smoker people were strangers to me. This time I could demand and I did that. To no avail. I kept fighting caring for them and moreover for me. But I think I've lost. Don't feel like telling them anymore...

Smoking is indeed dangerous to health... Some of the harmful effects are it causes a lot of cancers such as lung cancer, it strains arteries in your heart, it makes your heat beat faster than usual, it can cause stroke and heart attack, emphysema, bronchtis, develops the risk of low birth weight and a lot more... good thing, i never liked smoking and yes drinking and taking dr*gs too... i have been living a healthy lifestyle for years...

i think it is very harmful for health, not only for the smokers, but for the ones around them, like family people, friends. so it is good for quitting smoking, not only for yourself ,but the one loves you and you love.

So your notion is that if all smokers quit then everyone will be healthier. I suppose then that we'll have no more orange and red air quality alerts because we've gotten rid of those nasty smokers. For the record I am a smoker. I'm trying to quit. Nonetheless, it galls me when I cross paths with a witch hunter....They're the folks who drive suv's. They work in factories. They, in their own way, contribute to the air quality and victimize everyone. They don't see it that way, tho, because their 'habit' is necesary and folks just have to deal, even tho there are healthier alternatives to things like carbon monoxide belchers. Tho it may seem otherwise, I am not against quitting the nicotine. I'm against the hitleresque handing of it all..find a group, point a finger and maybe folks won't notice other contributors to the problem, like themselves..

Yes, you are right in your observation that smokers are not mentally strong enough to have the courage to quit smoking.

I know two people who really should stop but are not going to! A friend at work smokes and her husband who has lung cancer, still smokes! The smoking gave him the lung cancer! He had stopped when he found out but he started up not long after! A few years ago his wife did quite for like a year. Then she started up again! Then stopped after hie husand found out he had lung cancer. When he started up again so did she! Not good at all! I also work with a guy who should also! He has alot of stomach problems and we think some of it is do to his smoking! He isn't ready too! I hope he quits someday! On a good note,I have a sister-in-law who quite a few years ago and has not gone back! My top supervisor,at work, did, too! Seven years ago he quite when he found out his wife was pregnant! Now we need to get all the others to quite like the people I mentioned and my brother-in-law,too!

Yes of course! Definitely! I spent years trying to persuade my dad to quit smoking and finally he has and hasn't smoked for about six years now. And I am so glad that they passed a law over not being allowed to smoke indoors in public places. And it just feels so good to be in a smoke-free environment, however whenever someone does smoke I feel even more agitated and I just can't believe why people are still smoking nowadays – you get absolutely nothing beneficial from it!

I've seen my father and my father-in-law suffered and still suffering from smoking. During the time when my father-in-law was advised to have a surgery because of gallstone, the doctor told us that anyone who will be under surgery should stop smoking one month before the date of operation. But since he needs it immediately, having a surgery is like gambling his life. He survived the surgery but had a mild heart attack which brought him to have a speech problem. At this time, he was still suffering from lost of breath even he had stopped smoking for more than a year. I know it will be a lifetime suffering.

Yes! I'm totally supporting you on this one...Smoking is really dangerous for both smokers and non-smokers who accidentally smell it. But, if they really want to smoke. Well, smoke anytime you want as long as they're not with people who are not smoking especially children...
