I tried to get a new i phone without an upgrade and it costs 500 dollars for a 3gs. I am desperate for a new i phone since mine is cracked and the i pod doesn't work. I have tried looking for phones on craigslist, but they are all too expensive and I'm not sure whether they are legit. Does anyone have a suggestion?

You can try the auction sites out there. They seem to have some good deals at times.

I don't really trust the auction sites very much. A lot of them don't seem very legit.
