When a person dies in my country with the same religion as I have, we follow certain burial customs. The first thing we would do is hold a wake for 7 nights. During those nights we'd hold vigils. After the wake, the funeral comes next where there will be a mass before burying the dead. Then after the entombment there will be a nine night prayer service which concludes with a novena and meals shared w/ family, friend and relatives. Then it is followed by 40 days of mourning which an evening prayer will have to be offered. These customs are done because we believe the soul of the deceased is still wandering. Last will be the one year anniversary celebration of the departed. As a sign that the deceased is still remembered. Whew! I was wondering, are there any similarities with the customs in your country or religion in mine?
