Running for beginners?

Hello. Can anyone tell me how I can begin a running program? I exercise regularly, but am still about 40lbs overweight since my pregnancy two years ago. I would really like to start running regularly in addition to my workouts 4-5 days per week. Three days a week I do weight training mixed with a little cardio (like walking or the eliptical). The other 1 or 2 days that I work out I do a spin class on the spin bike. I love it, but they only offer a couple classes at my gym. I would really like to begin a running program, but not sure how and where to begin. Any suggestions? Thanks very much for any suggestions.

The idea is to be consistent. So you start out slow with perhaps speed walking and then moving up to jogging. Here is what I did and although I was not big I was a terrible roller coaster dieter. Where as all my life I pretty much starved and had a very small meal a day. Which I could always loose weight but not keep it off. So finally 3 years ago, I listened to my son and he said I had to build up my metabolism. So I began to eat 3 times a day with a couple snacks. I bought a healthrider exerplay bike, where Jillian Michaels voice controls the pedals. So there is no cheating. I never in my life drank water, and so I substituted all colas for water, not an easy thing. I rode my bike indoors, stationary 1 hour for 5 days a week. The pounds melt off and in four months I lost 70 pounds, I was very consistent. So in effort not to loose any more weight because I am very thin, I eat 3 - 5 times a day, drink almost a gallon of water per day and still ride my bike 3 days a week for only half an hour. Look at this way if you were to join a gym it would take you 20 - 30 minutes each way to get there so you will be surprised if you put your mind and determination and stick with it, you will loose weight. My metablism is so high now that I can eat within reason just about anything. I do watch certain things like let go of the thousand island, which I so love and use vinaigrette. No mayo, and thing fatty like. I do eat pizza, and or a few other junk foods type just not everyday. Three full years and again, I must eat 3 - 5 times a day as I can feel if I skip breakfast I cannot function. Hope this helps, just substitute my bike for an exercise consistent routine. My bike cost me $359.00. So the idea is that if it is jogging and or indoor exercise be consistent.

Thank you! What an accomplishment! Great advice! Consistency really is the thing I seem to have the hardest time with, just never realized how huge of an impact it can have. It amazes me how fast you have gotten your metabolism to go! I must take your advice and stick with it! Thank you very much! It's nice to hear about it from the experience of someone who has been in your situation.

You are off to a great start with your weight loss! My advice to you is not to over-do it. You are incorporating lots of different workouts. You don't want to injure yourself because you are doing to much. I don't know much about running but I have heard it is hard. Good luck.

Thanks for your kind words! This is true. I definitely do not want to injure myself, especially because I know running can be hard on the body if you are overweight. How about diet? Do you follow a strict diet? Every time I try to do a diet that is too strict, I do well for awhile, lose some weight and then give up and pretty much put it right back on. I know this is not so great for your metabolism either.
