When i click on "new" discussions i look at certain things to encourage me to respond.
One thing i have noticed is the amount of avatars that have no picture.
I find this off putting as perhaps subconciously i find this person anonymous.
Why do you not upload a picture or an image that represents you?
personally i think an avatar identifys how you think. a photo or a image that represents you.
Any reason you do not use an avatar?

Though I have had one since day one, I will respond anyways. Some members really do not know how and or feel it is a sure way of being completely anonymous are my guesses.
It is nice to see an avatar because there are so many similar names and having a common avatar helps me instantly to see who the discussion starter and or response/comment person is.
My Wendy has been with me from day one - but I must admit I have upgraded her 3 times in Photoshop. She needs to change and reapply make up from time to time.

There so many on here with the same initials that I confuse sometimes because of the numerical sequences.

Yes, there are a lot of similar names, especially when they just use initials and letters. I get confused as well, and I admit that it is much easier when I can just look at the avatar and know immediately who the person is.

Honestly I did not thought about it until I reached about (500) and a friend said me that I needed an avatar to have a personality at myLot. I thought again -- I am not fast when I need to take an important decision like this -- and chose a caricature of a forgotten 19th century author that I like, and I never changed.

These four authors are famous ! Do you know that their graves is at the same place today, the Pantheon ? Dumas has been the last to be admitted in this monument, against the will of his family, in 2002.
My avatar is an author named Albéric Second. He was a journalist for the tabloids of his time, and wrote novels and theatre plays, with a lot of humor and sarcasm. He was born in the town where I live today, and I discovered him here a few years ago. A few writings have been translated in English, but not the best.

And all this time I thought it was actually you. lol, kidding, but I did not know it was an author. Great choice and agree with ajk, I can identify you instantly.

this is exactly why avatars are so important. i can pick you out in a second. i want to do this as i have identified people that do 10 discussions a day and their avatars have alerted me of passing on to the next discussion.
who is the author you use?
i have read Dumas, Hugo, Zola(is it zola?) or Voltaire?

I like to change my avatar as I am a photographer (not professional) and my subjects are mostly my flowers/pets/garden. This is a nice place for me to showcase my effort.

Mine is a Sony DSC H 50. Just type this for a search and you will get to know all about it - 9.1 mega pixels with a 15x optical zoom. I love to take pictures of birds that visit my garden and this zoom feature helps me capture the most exotic images of these lovely creatures at close range and also in action.
Here is the image of the cuckoo bird which is perched on the noni tree

Hello Ajk,
You are right, the avatar identifies a user. When one of my friends changed his avatar, I was a bit confused: was it him or another user with a similar name? I had to check my list of friends to make sure he was my friend.
That's because I rather assimilate the posts with the image, rather than with the user name. I am not too good with names; even if I try to write my interlocutor's name in each response, I still don't remember the names. But with images... this is another story!

Now that I saw your discussion I decided to upload an avatar. I didn't have one until now.
I chose an image that I like but it is not too clear at the size of the avatar. I don't know what to do. Should I change it to a more visible one or should I let it as it is? I mean, who really wants to see what represents me, can visit my profile, right?
The image represents a great Romanian comedian who salutes everybody with lots of flowers. It is a way of saluting here, in my country. I don't think there is an equivalent in English for "I salute you with flowers". Or is it?

I do not want my photo be known to many people. We are not like politicians or cine stars who want more exposure of themselves. I thought I should put an avatar which may be liked by many. that is why I chose the avatar I have now. while personally i may not mind loading my photo some of my family members do not like it. have a good day.

An avatar gives me something I can relate to. Though I'm not sure if I even look at the avatar while selecting a discussion, having many 'defaults' on a page does put me off.
And what aspect of me is shown in my avatar? It's not me for sure, maybe it shows my being flashy..... LOL
I went for an avatar while joining too, and it was rather a large one. Then came the time to promote my creations and since then this person is flashing eyes in my avatar, in different setups. Kind of like it. :)

As Mike has already stated, for a while I did not have an avatar. I guess that part of it might have been laziness, but really I did not think that it was all that important. Then, he gave me some really good advice, which I followed, and I noticed that I did get more responses on my discussions as well as comments from other users within my response box, because they had recognized my avatar and remembered that we had a good time on other discussions.

I really like to put nice avatars, i was changing now and then but after this one, I dont feel like changing it. I feel most of the new members dont have avatar. As they get used to mylot, I believe they will add more beautiful ones.

I think there are many reasons to attract response to your discussion on mylot. One method is your topic is attractive to people. One method is that you can use some picture to attract people to response your topic. One method is that your content of your topic is interesting

Hello friend how to attrack responses in the discussion have many ways, one of them is your avatar (may be) but I don't think so. for quality of discussion has edge, good title is one possible way and have a good reputation around, and friends around that always support you.. lastly kind of discussion presented... everybody read the FAQ out of this will not attractive... see you around

I look at avatars a little, but truly, I am lured into a topic by two things:
One, is the title. If the title looks interesting, I look at the snipet below. Which is number two. I read the snippet and if it doesn't pull me in, I don't bother. For example, if it seems to be lacking basic grammar, I don't bother. Part of this is my pet peeve of people using this language incorrectly, or not bothering with the basics like capitalization or punctuation.
I understand that it's not all about that, and I have still been lured into some discussions despite the above, and there have been good subject matter. However, I guess it's kind of like skipping a topic because of lack of avatar.

What's having an avatar matter so much? I know it "looks nice", but I don't see much purpose to it. Also, I am not sure what will be considered okay as an avatar. Isn't there some rule for example, of not being allowed to just take some random picture off the internet? I have no idea actually. I haven't really looked into it. Don't care much either.

If you read some of the other comments on this discussion, you might begin to understand why having an avatar can help. That does not mean that it is the only thing that will help, but it does help people to recognize you easier, which might make them more apt to respond to you.

hi ajk I think that my changing graphics do represent me as I have
an artistic slant in them and keep trying for ones that go with
my moods or with the feeling of mylot on any given day. I mean
my face is on my facebook account so on mylot I give in to my
artistic slant with my graphics instead. I get plenty of responses
to most of my discussions as is.

i don't consider avatars pretty much
i read the discussion headline and if that interest me i do and read what the user have to say then give my opinion to him and also when the discussion is started by some of the regular member i take time to see what the discussion is about
to get more responses in you discussion try to take part in other user discussion and help them out and when you start a discussions many would come back to help you out
this is the only way i think one can get many responses

I've used an avatar since day one. It is the first thing I do when I join a site. I don't want people to think I have something to hide. I'm a very nice person and am proud of it! I chose a silly avatar for this site because that is the real me! Others should do likewise, and have fun. That's what it is all about!
