Are we too obsessed with making money online?

I see a lot of people wasting their lives clicking on ads worth almost nothing, and they often sit online all day without earning much at the end of the day.
Do you think we, as a whole, are too obsessed these days with the possibility of making money online?
Do you think we get too carried away by reading success stories about people who've earned a lot, and somehow think that we might make the same amount as them one day?

I heard of success stories about making money online. But I think it depends on the talents and qualification someone has. A person with no talent in writing will have no success in earning money online by doing this. A webmaster can make instead a lot of money by making sites and writing their content if the person has a talent in doing this and is good for it. So the important thing is to know how to choose.

I didn't have any experience in writing when I started to write online, but with lessons and a lot of practice I am now rather successful and able to earn a fair amount of money by writing, which is what I love to do so I am very glad about that. I hope that I will be able to carry on with this in the future, however I do wish that I had some experience designing websites as I feel that I would be able to earn a lot more money by doing this rather than writing but unfortunately I have absolutely no talents in that area at all.

Everybody has talents in some field. You have to discover them. I heard also that some people earn good money from photos. The most important thing you have to keep in mind is that you choose the things you really like to do. If you do that thing with passion, the result must be good with hard work.

When i came to know about earning through online from my friend, i was convinced about it that i give it a try. But, until now i still haven't earn lots of money through online yet. But, at least i am earning something through online and have fund in paypal for me to buy things from Ebay whenever i want or even cash-out when i need real cash in hand. I don't spend much time into earning sites recently because my offline matters took most of my time. By the way, only those who have suitable online skills are able to make good money through online.

I like to be able to buy things on eBay whenever I need to. There are a few small things that I have to buy from there, and I love to be able to buy those things whenever I need to without having to worry about whether I am going to be able to afford it or not. I agree that having appropriate skills is hugely important when realising whether you can make good money or not, but I believe that a drive for success is just as important as, without this, you are very unlikely to succeed at all.

With the economy being so bad so many places it is easy to become obsessed about money or the lack of it. It is important to give serious consideration to how we spend our time trying to make money, some choices are almost worthless.

Yes well the state of the economy is certainly something to consider. The thing about earning online is that at least you know you will be able to make some money, whereas you might not always be able to make money if you were to use offline methods such as trying to find a formal job. There just aren't many jobs around at the moment, and many people might find that they can earn more money by remaining online than they could if they searched for a job offline. I have tried, but I can't find anything above minimum wage, and I earn more than that by doing this- so I don't see why I would do that.

Everybody is obsessed with making money, not only online. We need money for our everyday life, and since we can earn extra, why not? It's better to have more money in our pockets than none of it at all So long as we keep trying, exploring different opportunities, there will be a chance for us to srike it big. Earning online is different from earning in the real world. IN the real world, we have someone to guide us, but online? We are our own boss, we set our own time and that's where the money is, hidden

That's very true, everyone is obsessed with money both online and offline. I suppose online is as good a place as any to try to make some spare cash if you have a couple of hours free of your time. I love being my own boss. I've never been too fond of having to abide by the rules of a boss, so working for myself has always been a pretty good option to me. I am trying to save up money in an ISA at the moment, as I figure that I should be able to save up enough to be able to have a really nice holiday if I save up for a couple of months now.

I like the money I earn online, but I´m not obsesed with it. I cannot get obsesed with that money, because it´s too little. I have knwn for a long time that those thousand earned are fake. So I know what is my limit working as I do. I earn about $100 a month with hard work and only if I don´t have more important things to do. I use my online earnings for vacations. The month I´m on vacations I earn a lot less, of course, as my earnings come in a great part from being active at some sites so my referrals are active at my sites. This month I have to go to the hospital sevderal times for exams. Less earnings, of course.
I do other things besides being online.

That is a lot more than most people earn online, so well done for making such a good start. Having active referrals is key with boosting your earnings and you will find that they will earn more for you in the long term than you earn for yourself. It's just a nice bit of extra cash in your account, because you know that even if you don't have the time to go online for a couple of days, your referrals will keep things ticking over for you.

As my referrals are mainly from mylot, I can even tell them PM when I´m not going to be active for some reason.

Certainly we are. You see, a lot of people go through a lot of hardship and labor in order to earn bread for their family. Although greed has it's own share in this obsession of ours but its not the only thing. And in todays' competitive world if one fails to stand high, he will certainly search for some other means to make his pocket heavy which others might have yet not discovered. For youngsters like me, Internet is not only a means of recreation but it has a great impact on what we do on daily basis. If you are not on any social networking site then you are probably made fun of by your friends and pals as if you are still living in stone age.
This urges us even more to be in touch with the latest advancements of the Internet and if it gives us an offer to make money with minimum effort for the tasks we'd do simply for free then its simply awesome.. ain't it.. :p
I believe this is what obsess us with the idea of making money on-line.

I only have one friend who is not a member of a social networking website, so I do agree that people may get made fun of if they're not members, as they're seen to be almost abnormal to the rest of their friends and often their family too.
The internet is 100% addictive, and what is expected of us now, and everyone who I know who has discovered the joys of online earning has become a little bit addicted to it, now that they know the possibilities of what they could achieve.

i don't think i am obsessed with making money online. i want to make sure that i make enough money to take care of my family. i enjoy making money online and teaching others to do what i do through my website. so far i have about 75 people and they seem to be very happy with the money they are making!

Yes I would love to be able to make enough to take care of my family, too. I am doing alright at the moment, but there is always room for improvement in earnings, particularly when children are involved, as we all know how much money they cost to take care of. It's good that you let other people know how to make money through your website, I have a similar website but it's fairly new so I haven't had as much traffic as you yet. I am fairly confident that I will do in the future though, as online earning is a very open market which more people need to be able to take advantage of.

I really do not call it an obsession. I think of it more like a necessity when we need the money to buy things or help pay the bills.
@GemmaR (8517)

Well certainly we do need the money to pay the bills. But some people don't have an offline job at all, and will literally spend their whole lives on the internet working for just a couple of pennies per hour when really they should be doing something which would pay them a bigger amount.
A lot of bills can be paid using the online earnings as extra income, but perhaps not as the main source of income for a household.

Personally, I don't think that I am too obsessed with making money online. I do it right now because of the fact that I enjoy it and also because of the fact that I'm able to do little things for our family with the money that I've made online that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. However, I also harbor no illusions in my mind that I will get rich by doing activities online, so I don't spend a ton of my time with those kinds of activities.

I love being able to buy little extras for my family with the money that they don't even know I'm earning. They know about two of my online jobs, but they're proper formal jobs, not like the freelance stuff that most people do on here. They don't however know about the work that I do for extra income, which is good because it means that I can treat them, completely by surprise, whenever I want to without them expecting me to do so. I think as long as you know your own limits, it will be okay.

I like to see the stories of people who've made money in different ways; like those who have set up small businesses selling arts and crafts products that they've made themselves at home. But I agree that a lot of success stories are nothing but encouraging people to think that they can achieve the impossible, when really there's no way that the majority of us could ever be that successful.

I think I was in that situation a few years ago, but I have given up the obsession. One can indeed find a goldmine here but I guess I am just not that lucky to be able to find a real site that will make me rich. I know that there are very good websites that give their owners millions of income, but I just could not match their skills in using the computer. I think I have learned to accept the fact that this is all I could make online.

Yes there must be some very good websites out there, however I haven't really come across any of the "big" ones that people seem to use as yet. I do earn a lot myself, but I use six websites rather than just one, so the income is split over the six of them, with the largest one earning me ~$10 per day. Not as much as some people claim to earn, but enough to pay my bills and begin saving up for a house, at least.

I think we are obsessed with making money online because it's the easiest way to make money, we don't have to leave our house and be in an environment that we don't like or be somewhere filled with people that we don't like. If you pick the best sites that actually pay you good money then you will find yourself making a good lump sum.

It is much easier than having to travel to a job. When I think about it, it would cost me $10 per day travelling into the nearest city to me to go to a job, and working from home means that I do not have to worry about spending that money and so I can spend my wages on more important things.
There are some good websites out there, it's just a question of being able to find them, and being able to put enough work in to get the money that you're looking for from them.

It is indeed an easy source for some people, myself included now, however it took a lot of time, work and effort to get to the stage I'm at now. I would never have been able to earn hundreds of dollars per day right from the beginning as some people seem to be able to do. I just can't do it, and I don't think that people who say they've earned that much are telling the absolute truth when they talk about how much they earn on the internet.

Basically I'll online for almost everyday. So, instead logging on facebook or friendster, maybe it is worth when I can earn money with it. When I found mylot, I think this is the way that I can earn money without get out from my house. Furthermore, mylot allowed me to express my thought and feeling in English. Usually I had to speak in my language most of the time. So, here this is the time to sharpen my engish..

I am spending more time earning money than I have been doing on social networking websites at the moment. I thought that I spent far too much time on the internet, but with websites where I can earn some cash while I'm chatting I don't feel as though I am wasting my time at all. If anything, I spend more time online than I did before, as I am constantly trying to find new websites on which to make money. I like it when I find a new one, which is good, that I hadn't even heard about in the past.

Oh I know I won't. I earn what I can online so that I can get things to better myself, a cellphone so that I can recieve calls from potential employers, I'm saving up for a moped so I can get to and from places and have more freedom. I wish that we could earn enough online but we really don't.
I feel like people spend too much of their lives online and it's not healthy, but I'm not much of one to talk right now as I am always online just trying to make those pennies so I can better myself.
When I do find a job you'll see less of me, but of course I'll still come just to add a few pennies to the jar.

I think some people might be obsessed.. others might be desperate due to their situations. I know I've been in multiple categories myself. I was obsessed for a short time before I began to see it wasn't worth it. I was also desperate for awhile because life was really difficult and anything I could do to help out was better than nothing.
Right now I have a better balance. I don't kill myself trying to earn a few dollars online.. but I still spend quite a bit of time online just trying to earn a bit extra. But this time my plan isn't to help us out financially or to help pay our bills or anything. What I earn this year is all being saved up for Christmas. Thus far this year I have close to $200 towards our Christmas this year.. which sadly isn't very much considering I have 5 kids, one of them is a teenager! That will probably be enough to buy him 1 gift.

Desperation is certainly something which has a great impact on some people's urge to earn money online. I believe that it is a really nice thing, though, because no matter how desperate or unemployable a person may be, there is always something online that they could do to earn money, so there's no real need anymore to be in poverty. Even if an individual does not have a computer, in the UK, there are libraries where you can go online for free all day every day, meaning that providing a user is in the UK (as I am) there is never a time where they would not be able to earn an income from the internet.
$200 towards Christmas is good, especially seeing as we're not even half way through the year yet. There is still so much time to save up for gifts, so you will be able to at least double that! Good luck, and I admire you for being able to cope with five children!!
