My chemo has moved

I woke up at 5:45 this morning because they wanted to have extra time to do my treatment. My ride showed up at the motel at a little before 6:30. While we were on the freeway, we had a blowout but the driver kept going until we got to a parking lot, but the tire was totally destroyed. I got to the cancer center before the registration desk opened but at least the front door opened so I didn't have to stay out in the rain. I sat there for over an hour and then they decided that I should get this treatment done at the symptoms evaluation unit at the university hospital because it was going to take longer than they would be open. Although I got to the hospital before 9, it is already 11 and they haven't brought up any of the meds yet. They did start an IV with normal saline, but that is it so far. I guess they will have to do the pre-meds twice (once in the beginning and once before they start the desensitization process. At least here I can get a regular meal instead of just having a sandwich and cookies and other "junk". I will tell more after I get home tonight, but I expect to be here until pretty late tonight. Oh well...Have a great day!!!

Hi Deb,
It seems hospitals and doctors are like that everywhere in the world. I have to have a colonoscopy and a biopsy soon and my daughter, innocently asked me to schedule the hours so they´d be there. No way for me to ask for anything, even though they will be expensive procedures.
It seems hospitals have not gone past the Middle Ages yet. I hope all works out fine finally for you.

Thanks for the response! I remember they tried to do a colonoscopy in January, but when I checked in to get the procedure done, I was feeling nauseous. They didn't actually do the procedure but admitted me to the hospital because they figured that there was some kind of blockage. I hope your procedure goes well.

I hope the procedure will be ok too. I have to have it done once in a while because I have polyps.

That does not sound good. I hope they don't cause any problems.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really need that right now. I hurt so bad I can't stand it! I know that in a few days things will be back to normal, but that doesn't help right now! Have a great weekend!!!

Hopefully things went OK for you from when you posted this. I know that when you have things planned you are wanting to do Medical wise, and they do not always go as planned, it can be hard. Especially when you are expecting something to be done at a certain time and then have to wait. Only makes you wish they would hurry and get things done now. But my thoughts and Prayers are with you.

Things went smoothly the rest of the night, but they didn't get done until around 2am. They didn't make me leave right away, but woke me up about 6am so that the room would be available for anyone who came for treatments today. Thanks for the comment!

It sounds as if this was a very long day. I do not yet see an update from you either. Hope you are okay.

Nothing new to update except that it is 1am and it is still not finished yet. They said about another hour and then more fluids until my ride gets here. I just hope next time is more organized.

I would be so frustrated if something like that was to happen to my husband. He has had two treatments of his chemo so far and Friday will be his third treatment (that will mean that he is a quarter of the way done with his treatment). They have a cancer center on the campus of the hospital, but in a separate building. I don't think that they would ever move an outpatient to inpatient chemotherapy in our situation.

Dang, you had a longer day then what I thought. You had to get up real eary and went through alot before getting to the doctors besides having to go through what you had to go through afterwards. Hopefully things go more smoothly next time and doesn't take as long to get done with all of your treatments.

I definitely was longer than I had intended. I tried to call the clinic, but I just got their voice mail. I need to know when they are going to schedule labs for the next two weeks and whether I will have to go through more desensitization or not. I will let you know when I know more. Have a great weekend!!!

It was annoying without a doubt. What's even worse is that now I find out that they didn't realize it was going to take so long to do the treatment or they would have scheduled it at the hospital to start with. I talked to the study coordinator today and she said that they would send me to women's and children's hospital next time because she was not pleased with the way things went at the university hospital and that they hadn't scheduled all the labs. The rest of the treatments will take just as long and they want everything in order before hand so that maybe I can get out of there earlier.

geesh! they keep you waiting so long. as if it isnt already miserable enough for you. its a darn good thing you get to bring your computer as id die of bordom! i mean i got bored just laying in the room while the tech checked some things. they tell you just relax but who can do that not being in your own comfy surroundings?

Thanks for the response! I am on the computer as much as I am able, but when they give me the benedryl, forget it. They started that right before I got my lunch and I was flying high. They are getting ready to do another round of pre-meds so that maybe I wouldn't react to it again. But I'm told that it will take over 6 hours if you include the pre-meds and then they will observe for an hour to make sure all is well. At least here, it is possible to relax. It might not have all the comforts of home, but at least I have an adjustable bed rather than having to use pillows to sit up. Have a great day!!!

Hey there,
Shucks all that on the way to the hospital, wow must have been a bit exhausting. Then to top you get moved and everything gets delayed. But on the brighter side you are in a bit more comfort and having a better meal, if we can call that some comfort.
I do hope all goes well and praying for you not to be so sick after the treatments. Take care and hope all goes as well as possible for the rest of the duration there.

I think the most exhausting part was that I didn't sleep well last night. I went to sleep around 12:30 and woke up about an hour later and surfed the net then went to sleep again. Then I got a wake up call at 5:45 so yes, I am exhausted. And the only time I actually sleep is when they give me the benedryl, although so far this time I haven't become loopy yet (at least not to the extent or as soon). Thanks for the comment!

Oh the joys of hospital 'routine' lol
Nice to see that you're keeping your spirits up, that counts for a great deal.
Meals and chemo! you are definitely being spoiled today, what with that and automotive stunts on the freeway, the summer holidays are going to be sooooooo dull :)
take care :)
