Are you open to many different genres?

Do you like to read books from many different genres or do you usually stick to one genre that you really like? Which genre(s) do you like? If you get a book as gift and it belongs to a genre that you don't usually read, do you keep it and welcome the new experience or you do return it to the shop and get a book that you know that you will enjoy? I tend to stick to the genres that I know that I like for instanse psychological horror novels and historical novels, but I have decided to read something different next time maybe fantasy or science fiction. I have read very few books from those genres and I think that it could be interesting to read something different.

I have a pretty strong attachment to high fantasy novels. I don't stray too far from the genre. When I tell myself to venture out and pick more I wind up going around the bookstore and maybe I'll pick up something outside of fantasy that sounds interesting enough and four fantasy novels that looked too good to pass up. I AM trying to read outside my personal fantasy box. I've been reading some non-fiction (I stick to subjects I have an interest in like dreams, mythology, and writing) and some old classics. I haven't really read anything outside my fantasy box that I've REALLY enjoyed (except for Surprised by Joy by C.S. Lewis, which I read because I have an interest in C.S. Lewis, which comes from me reading his fantasy novels... naturally) but I'm still making the effort to read some stuff other than fantasy. But I doubt I'm ever changing my mind about my favorite genre.

I have read a few fantasy novels, but I usually read books from other genres. I especially like psychological horror novels and I have read many of them. The only C.S. Lewis book that I know is "The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" I got that one as gift when I was a child. I have decided to be more open to other genres in the future and I wil try to read more fantasy, science fiction etc. Which fantasy books would you recommend?

Thanks I will write down the names and see if I can find some of them at my local library. My library has website where we are able to search the database so it should be quite easy to see which books they have. I am sure that they have the Lord of the rings, but I am not sure about the others.

I would recommend all of the Chronicles of Narnia books. (Don't just read Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! Read them all!) They were some of my favorites as a kid and they still are! I also love the fantasy classics Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, and The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Some of my favorites published more recently would be The Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks, The Legend of the Guardian-King series by Karen Hancock, The Auralia Thread by Jeffery Overstreet, and the Dragon King Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead.

I am happy to hear that you share my interest in horror. That is one of my favourite genres. I often read psychological horror novels, but I also read other kinds of horror stories sometimes. There are a couple of authors from my country that I really like, they have written some great horror stories. I also like "Choose your own adventure" books. When I was a teenager I read lots of them, but I have also read some of them as an adult. My husband and I once read one of those books together, and we had a great time.

I think that interactive books for adults would be a great thing. I am not teenager anymore, but I still like those books. I sometimes borrow them at my local library, and they have many different ones. I don't really know what I love about horror, but it has been one of my favourite genres for many years and I am always excited when I find new books by my favourite authors. I like books that scare me and surprice me at the same time and some of my favourite stories are stories with a twist at the end.

I just wish there will be interactive books for adults because we all know choose your own adventure is for kids and teens I still do enjoy those books. I really don't know but what I love about horror is the fact that makes me here for a certain characters. There are characters I root for to survive. I also love how it plays with my emotions, it ignites fear and worry.

I have my favourites, like anyone, but I'll read absolutely anything. And I mean anything. In the last year, I've read non-fiction, science fiction, girlie romantic fiction, crime, fantasy, general fiction, kids' books... it's all good.

Wow, that is a lot of different things. I also read both fiction and non-fiction, but when I read fiction I tend to stick to the genres that I usually enjoy like psychological horror stories. What topics do you read about when you read non-fiction? I usually read about psychology, psychiatry, nursing, history, other cultures, art or philosophy, but my favourite topic is psychology.

My partner's a clinical psychologist, so I don't need to read those - she tells me loads of interesting stuff! For me, it's mainly science, philosophy or religion stuff that catches my attention, usually because I've seen something in a film or read a comment that I want to know more about.

I sometimes wish that I were better at science, but it has never been one of my strengths. I think that I am better at languages and things like that. You also mentioned history, that is topic that I often read about. I recently read six books about the history of Copenhagen and I learned a lot of interesting things that way.

Hi there! I love reading books! :) I usually go for the romantic comedy genre. Reading is sort of an escapism for me, so I prefer to read light-hearted works of literature rather than those serious, criminal stories. I also love fantasy as I am a believer in magic - Harry Potter, anyone? However, I also read psychological thrillers when I'm in the mood. :)

I also enjoy some romantic comedy books and of course Harry Potter. Sometimes, there are just so many good books to read and less time to read them. I try my best to read a book or two depending on my mood as well.

I also love reading. I think that it is a great way to spend the time and I read every day. Sometimes I am busy with work or other things and I don't have much time to spend on reading, but I still try read a few chapters for instanse before I sleep. I sometimes read romantic comedies, and I am reading one at the moment (a Danish book) but most of the time I read other kinds of novels. I have never read much fantasy, but I am thinking reading some books from that genre, because that would be a new experience for me.

Like many of the other posters I do have my favorite genres. But I also try to occasionally read something different from what I usually read. Part of this is because I'm a librarian and it's much easier to help people find goods reads when you have a little knowledge of a wide range of types. My personal favorites that I cycle through are science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, some romance, and historical novels. I will proudly admit that I read mainly for escapism. Not that I feel the need to escape this life, but the thrill of entering a totally different world, era, situation, etc. This is one reason I also like series and thick books. Once I find a world and characters I really enjoy I don't want to leave them! I do on rare occasions read non-fiction, but it's usually historical or on genealogical methodology, because both tie in to my researching family history. One factor many people forget when talking about genres. There are LOTS of subgenres for each genre. So if you like humor in your romances, look for a science fiction with humor. If you like mysteries, try a mystery set in the Old West. It's easier to mix genres if you actually read the style of fiction you like regardless of genre. If you pick up just any science fiction you still might not like it. But there are science fiction books that are romantic, have mysteries, are off the wall funny, are utterly depressing [dystopias, probably my least type of science fiction!], coming of age science fiction, etc. Think about it, and then ask your librarian for ideas for a new genre! Or post here and maybe I can suggest something!

I think it must be interesting to be a librarian. It used to my dreamjob when I was younger because I love books and I read a lot. I ended up choosing a different education, but I still love libraries and I can spend hours there. I hadn't thought about the subgenres, but it sounds like a very good idea to pay more attention to that. I want to give other genres a chance instead of sticking to the same genres all the time. In this discussion I got names of some fantasy novels that I want to read, and I have decided to find some science fiction novels as well.

I do tend to stick to the authors and genres I like, but since winning a book here and a book there from online contests, I have been reading these new authors and genres and actually enjoy them. It's like committing yourself to a person without having played the field. I am now reading genres I never thought I'd read and am enjoying them, even writing reviews on them. That's a lesson I have learned. Step outside the box. Don't tie yourself down to just one genre, or a handful of authors. As a writer, though, we are supposed to read what we write, however I think there is an advantage to reading different genres. You can always learn something new.

I agree with that, I think that we are able to learn many new things if we read different genres, that is one of the reasons why I have decided to read some books from the genres that I usually avoid. It might be surpriced and I might actually like some of those books. In the past I have read a few fantasy books or science fiction books, but I usually really books from other genres and it think it could be interesting to something different for a change.

I recently read a collectipn of short stories that he had written, I don't remember the title, but it is quite new. I have also read a lot of mystery books in the past. I love books that I can't put down, sometimes I feel like reading all night

I can see that your interests have changed many times. Your response made me think about my own reading habits. I also read comics when I was very young. Afterwards I started reading fiction for teenagers and for a long period I only read fiction. Then there came a period in my life where I didn't read fiction, I only read non-fiction books about psychology, religions, other countries etc. When I was in my mid-twenties I changed again and started reading a mix of fiction and non-fiction. I still do that today.

I am open to reading just about anything. I do prefer how-to books and unauthorized biographies, but then I'll read romance, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, etc. Sometimes I'm surprised when I come across something I'd never think to read. I think it's good to read across genres.

I also think that it is a good thing to read books from many different genres. It is a way to broaden your horizon and learn new things. Sometimes I discover that I actually like books that I never imagined that I would enjoy. When I visit the library I tend to choose book from genres that I know that I enjoy, but sometimes I receive books as presents and in those cases I read books from genres that are new to me.

I can see that you read many different kinds of books and I think it is nice to hear that you are open to different genres like Christian books, educational books and fiction. I haven't read any Christian books lately, but I have read some in the past. I also love reading, and there are many types of books that I find interesting. In future I want to read books from some of the genres that I don't know so well. I think that could be an interesting experience.

I love reading books. I read almost every genre. I do have my own favorites though. I love Paranormal romances now. Actually, as i think about it now, I read different genres depending on my moods. When I feel sad I read those books with light romance and i stay away from those books with heavy drama. When I feel like dwelling on my sadness I read those with dark themes and heavy story. But overall, I'm open everything. Reading makes you experience different things and i suggest that you try reading every genre and picked out what you like best.

Paranormal romances that sounds interesting, I don't think that I have read any books from that genre. I hadn't thought much about it before I started this discussion but I think that the books that I read also depend on my mood. Sometimes I am in the mood for long novels and sometimes I prefer to read something that is easier to read like a short story or a romance in magazine. I think that it is good idea to read something from every genre and I would like do that in the future

I always liked scientific books, or at least, all kind of books talking about facts, and the other genres weren't as much exciting as my expectation was. If I receive one of a different kind, I tend to be stuck-up with my ideas, so maybe I throw away that book, or in some cases I read that, but my approach is very critic, and I tend to discuss, or even reject a lot of thoughts, that otherwise wouldn't matter at all.

I am opened to different literary genres. I do have my personal favorites, but even though I do have my preferences, I am opened to reading other genres. If a book does seem interesting, then I will usually read it and see if I like it. Sometimes, I do, while other times I don't. But this is also true of books that fall into my favorite literary genre as well.

I have experienced the same thing. Even when I read books that belong to my favourite genre I don't like everything that I read. Sometimes a book sounds very interesting and I look to forward to reading it, but once I get started I realize that it doesn't live up to my expectations. Most of the time I borrow the books at the library instead of buying them and if I don't like the book I haven't spent any money on it and I can just return it to the library. If I had to buy all of the books that I want to read it would get really expensive

I am open to different genres but there are really those genres that I really like. It really depends on my mood. Sometimes, I want some serious stuff with thrills and suspense. Sometimes, I like the fantasy books. At times, I go for some vampire stuff or horror books or even get to read those kiddie an teenage books. I keep my options open 'cause in that way, I get to learn a lot more. Whatever book I read, I always try my best to finish it no matter how boring it actually is, especially if it was a gift from someone. Anyways, books for me are my ways of killing boredom and making me think of what the authors might think.

I recognize the things you write about genre and mood. I also think that my choice often depends on my mood. I usually like horror stories, but some of them (especially the very old ones) are written in a language that is hard to read and sometimes I don't have the energy to read that kind of stories. In those cases I like to read something easier for books that are written for teenagers or magazines. I think it is good to keep your options open, and it is a way to learn many different kinds of things. I don't manage to finish all of the books that I read, sometimes I give up because the books don't live up to my expectations.

Hi Poscopino, very interesting post. Just like you, I tend to stick to the book genre that I like. But I also tried to read books from other genres. I even buy books from genres that I like the least but honestly, I did not even finish reading a chapter. However, I believe that as we grow older, our interests also change so I might develop an interest of reading books that I do not like right now in the future. As of now, I like reading legal thrillers. But, my choice of the books that I will continue to read usually depends upon how the author keeps my interest. Thus, if I picked a good book from a particular author, I usually buy all the books of the said author. I also read some self-help and craft books lately. The genre that I like the least are science or war fiction. If I get a book as a gift not of the genre that I like, I still keep it respecting the choice of the giver while hoping to read it in the future. How about you, have returned a book because it was not a book that you read?

If I get a book as I gift I keep it even when it belong to a genre that I don't usually read. Sometimes I actually get surpriced when I read it, because I discover that I enjoy more than I expected. It is a way to experience something new and at the same time I respect the choice of giver. Sometimes my friends give me books because they want to introduce me to an author that they like. I don't think that I have ever bought a book from the genre that I like the least, but I have thought about borrowing some books at the library. That way I would be able to return the books if I don't like them and if I don't manage to read more than a few chapters.

I have some favourite genres (actually, fantasy and science fiction, classic novels, mysteries) but I read from different genres as well. I don't usually buy books but instead borrow them from my local library, and there all the different genres are stored together under "fiction" rather than separated by groups. This means that it's easy for me to choose books of all kinds at the same time - I read anything with an interesting title/cover. However, there are some genres that I would usually avoid: chick lit, books about wars, airport thrillers like John Grisham, Robert Ludlum. I would read them if I had nothing else to read, but while I have a choice I prefer not to.

I also borrow books at the library and I don't buy books very often. At my local library the books are divided into groups, so it different from your library. I visit the library very often. My library has a website and sometimes I borrow books that I have found on the website and sometimes I look at the title or the cover when I have to decide if I want to read the book or not.
