I'm sure there are many people who sit down and read a book, the characters and the plot are so engaging that it really just pulls me in. It is almost uncanny how much its true to life. Almost a bit too true, when you realize that you wanted to read a couple of chapters before bed, and then look to see that its well after midnight and you have to get up at six the next morning. That is the point when you realize that the author did their job. If its able to pull me into the book, without the outside world, then it might been a good book. Sadly not as much time to read as of late, but still a little bit here and there when I have the chance.

I think the latest that I've ever stayed up reading a book is 4AM... (I needed to be up by 7:00AM) and ironically I didn't even like the book that much... I just wanted to finish it so that I could attempt to give it back to my friend the next day (she wouldn't take it!). On books that I've actually loved and couldn't put down for the life of me... I just haven't wound up reading as late! lol It happens to me pretty often though. I'm always reading, and constantly working on a never-diminishing (cause I keep buying more) stack of books.

Personally, I'm a pretty busy person... but I always make time to read. I don't like it when people tell me they have no time to read. I technically don't have time either... but that doesn't stop me! lol I always carry a book with me and I'm always snatching up spare minutes reading. Sometimes I take longer than I'd like to, but I almost always manage to get at least a book done a week. My typical average is 2-3... this month it's been more like one... but I'm still reading! It's not that I don't have time to read the books in my to-read shelf... it's that I keep buying more before I finish the ones I have. That's why the stack hasn't shrunk at all. lol I'm pretty stubborn in insisting that even though I don't really like a book... I've got to finish it! Otherwise I feel like I gave up too soon, or missed out on a chance to expand my horizons. Or just plain practice bearing with doing something I don't really want to do (it's actually a useful skill in life!).

I guess you're right, that is the real definition of a good book! It's been a while since I've had that experience, but I do remember reading some Grisham's that kept me awake most of the night, only to suffer through sleepiness the following day.

Indeed that is the one thing that is true about all good books, no matter what the genre it is or what author writes it. If it really something that keeps some people reading chapter after chapter, really not paying any attention to the time, as it disappears into nothingness and you just really keep reading and reading, until a lot of time really does pass. It is really something that is great. Some people will have different books that invoke these feelings. However, one thing that all mutual lovers of reading can agree is one thing that is true about all good books for most people is that it can be a bit of a step to really put it down. And you just have to find out what happens next a lot of the time. There is just rather engaging about this process, as we are getting pulled from page to page, to page. There is really nothing better than that feeling and its one that I enjoy time and time again. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I totally agree. It is just so true. It is really easy for me to get lost in a book. There are just those times, when I find myself getting lost in a book and not wanting or being able to put it down.

I have had this happen to me as well--sometimes it's much later than midnight by the time I put down the book! So now, when I am reading late into the night and want/need to go to sleep, I will read the ending just so that I can do away with the "suspense" that forces me to keep reading. I then go back the next day(s) and read the rest of the book. Probably cheating, but at least I get some sleep!

There are times where I almost think that its not the best thing to read a book late into the evening. Actually true, it is something that helps relax the mind, and helps me get to sleep faster. However, there is really a certain temptation to really continue to go onto the next page. Followed by the next page and then the next and you kind of do get the picture. There are just a lot of times where I feel like reading is one of the greatest things in the world but there is always too much of a good thing. So yeah, an author is really doing their job to say the very least, when you are staying up to a certaint point and really reading the book. It really does have a lot to do with our enjoyment factor a lot of the time. Especially when the author hooks you in and keeps pulling you chapter to chapter. And if you read it at night, there's a pretty good chance that it really can keep you up to all hours of the night. That's really what makes reading a grand thing. Thanks for your response. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

That is so true, and it's happened to me more times than I'd like to admit. It seems like as soon as I finish a book or series that I've been reading one of my friends has another suggestion for me, and it's just as good as the last one that I read. There was one book that I was reading where I became so invested, that when a major plot twist occurred, I literally had to stop reading the book for the rest of the day. I couldn't believe what had just happened and didn't want to accept the fact that I had actually read what I thought I read. I actually went back and read the part again, just to make sure I wasn't reading it incorrectly...That's when you know the author's done exactly what they need to do.

I do admit that there are a few times that has happened to me. There are times where something comes so far out of right field, that I put that book down. I take a couple of nice and swift deep breaths, before I really do look at what I have read. Then I re-read it again and there it is, right in front of my face. Of course, there are times where it is done so masterfully, that I almost slap myself for not seeing it coming. It makes a lot of sense. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

It is a world of wonder a lot of the time. Not to mention a wonderful break from the real world. It is really one of those things that it can be almost real, drawing you in a lot of the time. Really that is a mark of an exceptional author, that they are able to pull you into the story and really take you on a journey. That just means that they are doing their job. Thank you for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I agree. I am so thankful I can read. I can go to a whole different century and never leave my chair. There have been times at work when things get a little stressful and suddenly this feeling comes over me and I can't wait to get off work so I can go to what ever place I'm reading about and be with those people instead of the people I'm having to deal with at work.
