Most of us have worked part time. Its a good way to earn a few extra bux for our daily expenses.
When I went to ask for my first part-time job, it was a very embarrassing situation. But I believe everyone has to go through it. I had to go from one shop to another, and it was really really awkward situation for me. I learned one thing though, that there's a tough and competitive world out there. If you want to survive, you ought to give your best.
If you have ever had such an experience, it'll be great if you share it with us.

I know haha. Been using it here for years and never got around to changing it so it's a surprise to see someone having the same avatar. At first I thought I made a new discussion that I don't remember doing.

Hi Sajeev !
I guess, you really enjoyed them a lot.
Part time is meant simply for fun, since neither you expect them to cover all your expenses, nor at any cost, in future will you ever go to accept them as a full time; well, looking at the profile of most of them, no one will ever.. (lolz.. :P).
Now that you have turned professional, you have come to realize what you miss. Anyways, your full time job can also be made fun, if you have a good working environment and if money is not the only priority you have. It depends on the profile of your job, and as well how optimistic you are about it.
Thanks and good luck. :)

Morning himzey!
Oh gosh, my first part-time job goes back years, decades lol
I worked as a waitress in a local hotel during the summer between finishing school and moving onto college.
While I was in college I worked on Saturdays in the M&S in that city. I was in the slipper department and oh my feet at the end of the day with all that running around
Later on I have had several other part-time jobs such as call centres, selling coffee machines, baby sitting and secretarial work and working in the entrace lobby of a disco too.
It is indeed tough in the working world. If you are lucky enough to have a decent full-time job which you enjoy and pays well then maybe you can manage without a part-time job too. If that is not the case then if the second job is a fun one, it doesn't even 'feel' like work

Experience is what helps make life easier as we grow older and face new problems.
I can imagine that teaching maths is not only worthwhile economically but keeps you in touch with people too?
I forgot to mention that I also used my knowledge of English too for another part-time job in Italy. I was not teaching it as I didn't feel that I have the right qualifications but I did hold English conversation lessons for people of all ages and those went well at the time. Then I had to give them up when I was in full-time work as the hours did not coincide.

Hi mysD !
Hmmm.. Now thats called "experience".
There aren't many part time jobs available in my city. The people here have not fully adopted modern lifestyle, and you can still get to see some rural areas here. I dont know why, but these people look-down upon those who work part-time. The only thing they want to see is their wards earning a handsome pay in some MNC. Either its their lack of knowledge, or their swollen heads which makes them think this way.
Although, I landed the best part-time in my field of interest. I give Maths tuitions to youngsters mostly of which are high school students. Its a decent job, and it helps me keep in touch with my subjects as well.

My first part time job was teaching extra classes one day per week. I enjoyed it very much even though the pay wasn't great, but it was so much fun to do something so entirel different from my regular job.

My first parttime job I got through the help of my dad, since at his place of work they needed some extra sparetime help, so I was lucky to get in. After that I ended as a cashier in a supermarket.
I have never had problems finding jobs when I was youger and still lived in Denmark, but now living in a foreign country it isnt easy finding a job. Most complain about my level of Dutch though I got the Netherlands governments exam papers saying that I speak it fluently enough (I would say far from perfect, but everyone understands me)

Agreed. Its really hard finding a job in a foreign country. And looking at the problems one has to face with the local language, it gets even tougher.
Its really frustrating that, even when you work so hard to prove your worth and try to learn the local language for effective communication; and you still have to hear complaints about your fluency in it. Sad nothing can be done about it.
Only if they could realize how hard one has to try to get mixed up in a foreign country.

Himzey, you are very right about the frustration part I am experiencing... But this frustration have made me serious about starting up my own business instead, and working hard to make it succeed. Plus I am my own boss :)

Hi there,
My first job was acutally a full-time job at age 11, though they called it a part-time job. I was a scrawny tiny one and the owners must have known there was no way I was of legal age to work, they still hired me and burnt the h out of me. I worked 7 days a week from 3pm until midnight. It was a fast food restaurant, where I flipped burgers and fries and washed floors. I was so exhausted that I would fall asleep in class.
Teachers use to ask me if things were okay at home and I always made up excuses. Did not want my job to end. Though the worked me to the bone, I honestly will say that it was the beginning of how I am today in terms of workings.
Very hardworking girl. lol

My first part time job was when I worked for a grocery store. It wasnt awkward since the only reason I filled out the application was because me and my brother were trying to see who they would get the job first. I got the job of course and I loved it until my mother made me quit because I met a boy and she thought I was getting too close. That boy however I am still with til this day and it will be 11 years that we have been together this November. So my first job had a good outcome to it. I did also work for Kentucky Fried Chicken for 6 hours. I quit after having to end the shift cleaning the cooking area and being asked to clean the restroom. I also worked for Albertsons, until the closed down. Then I worked for Rainbow clothing store, but I got fired because I went in to pick up my check one day and didnt come back for my shift. I will admit when I was in high school I was terrible with jobs. And my last 2 years i had to keep a job in order to keep my co op class. But once I graduated high school I was able to get my act together and I kept my jobs for longer than 6 months.

Hi Latricia !
Its so nice to hear that your first job gave you someone so important to you.
Now that you mentioned it, you drew my attention towards another very important thing to have in life, "stability". I started a discussion on "adaptability", two days ago, and you gave me a good topic for my new discussion.
Thanks and enjoy mylotting. :)

It is a tough world and you have to be competitive if you want to survive.
When i was in college, i never had any part time job because that time my parents were a bit ok financially so i do not have to work they finance me. The first time i tried applying for a job was after college and it was not that tough either because my cousin worked there and she gave the boss good words about me and i never did fail her..till now i am working here. But i do agree that you have to give your best to survive, to get noticed and to get higher positions. I am competitive myself and i love competitions and showing off..a bit lol but i can take them out.

Hi Jazel !
When you competitive in nature you definitely get an edge over the others, because, then, your job becomes more fun. Besides this, several other good qualities begin to take shape in you.
It also gives a more realistic view about life and society.
Thanks. :)

My first job was in a restaurant at the age of 15 when I was in high school. I ended up working there for 12 and 1/2 years. We had some turn around with employees, but overall we had long term employees and we had SO much fun there. I gained many friendships and memories from working there and still am in contact with many of them, even though we have taken separate roads in our lives. I am now in a different field, but reminisce about the good times I had.

Hi mindym !
Seriously, working there for 12 and 1/2 years, you might have adjusted to the place so well that it would have felt really bad to leave it. Its great that you are still in contact with your friends from the place, and the memories and experiences you had, are priceless.

This is a very exciting discussion.
My first job was selling chocolate drinks in bottles and I have to make a house to house sale. I was doing it when it is sunny or rainy and there were times when I would face a angry dog who is ready to devour me.
Then I got another job selling insurance and all I have to show my prospect was a piece of paper as small as one-eigth of a coupon bond! Can you believe i was able to sell some though haha.
Before I accepted those jobs, we were promised of many opportunities ifever we meet a quota. Well those early part time jobs only made me realized that not all they say are true but just marketing strategy who will just take advantage of a poor first timer in job hunting.

Hi lipstick !
I see you have had a hard time, finding a good part-time job for yourself.
Indeed, its marketing strategy to offer attractive offers and bonus, apart from monthly wages.
Its good that you have finally realized the truth behind them; a bit late though. But its never too late.
Wish you all the best for your future. :)

of course all of us have started a partime job anytime in our life, i just remember mine, i was young when i decide to get a part time job, it was dificult when i start it, be a new in the job its not so easy, many people sometimes expect so mcuh about, its like having many boss around you until you better what exactly you most do,
my first part time job was in a restaurant foodprepare, it was fun after all.

Hi investor !
I totally agree. Once you start with a new job, you become a magnet for the eyes of rest of the workers. Whatever you do; even if you use the bathroom ( ..lolz); you are being observed, each second by those staring eyes, waiting eagerly to taunt or comment on anything which you do incorrectly or by mistake.
Its frustrating and I am confident about the first thought which comes in the mind of most of the part-timers when scolded by the senior employees, and that is- "Hey dude ! cant you mind your own business. Or probably you forgot. In that case, let me have the privileged to remind you,' You aren't the owner of this shop'".
But its perfectly natural for them to bully a new employee, because everyone has his/her own way of doing things, and may not appreciate you, going for a route, different than the one suggested by them. Every employee wishes to avoid any sort of inconvenience in their happy go lucky place, specially when it is created by some new chap who joined yesterday only.

Hi gP !
Thats really nice !
You were very lucky to land on a decent part time at your first shot.
I feels so good that you still have your 1st ever part-time still with. It might have often brought back to you, memories of the time you might had just started to search for one.
And if its related to teaching stuff, then who cares for a fulltime.. lolz ;)
My part time is teaching, too. Considering this, I guess I can tell how great it feels.
Happy mylotting. :)
