every now and then the technology changes. i remember that the pc i had i 10 years ago can't even compete with the mobiles today. with the increasing computing power and decreasing costs do you frequently change the hardware or just keep it up to a level you generally require i.e a basic computer with a word processor and internet.

It all depends what you want to do with your computer. As far as the Internet is concerned, an old 486 or Pentium 1 is quite fast enough - later models wont speed up your connection! I now use a Pentium 3 and the only addition that I found necessary was an extra USB card - only because I wanted USB2 for my wireless stick. P3's can be found for free in the dustbins! There is no need to buy ever! Why would you need multi-cored, super fast PC's when you type with two fingers?

I had a computer with Windows 98 up until 2 years ago. Now I have Windows XP. I don't have a super-duper fast computer or one that has lots of memory. But it works okay with what I do. I'm not one to go out and buy things just because they exist. My cell phone, for instance is not a smart phone. But I can take pictures and short video clips with it. I can check my email and get on the internet. I bought this just as the first iPhones were coming out and got a great deal. I'm sure I'll upgrade one day, but will always stay behind to get the better deals. I was just looking at a catalog a few minutes ago. Reconditioned PCs with 80GB hard drive for only $199. I'll probably get one of those sometime soon, since I now only have 40GB.
