Do you donate blood?

I went and gave blood yesterday and was awarded a nice metal pin for my 10th donation. I have given blood in the past but not in the same location so it was my 10th donation at that particular place. I am aware that in some countries you can actually sell your blood but here in the uk it is a totally volunatry donation and nothing is exchanged for it. You do get a non-alcoholic drink afterwards and something snacky to eat to help replenish the salts and sugars in the blood though.
How does it work in your country? Do you donate blood? Are you not permitted to for some reason in your country? Do you get given something for the blood that you donate?

How nice of you to be a routine blood donor. Here anyone can donate provided their blood type id okay. I am one who is not allowed to donate. I have Rogram negative blood type. It is a rare blood type and they cannot accept it. *sad*
I often wonder that many are like me and could use it if they needed it. But anyways, I would jump at the chance if allowed because so many today could use the donation. My understanding is that one someone needs blood, family and friends are to donate to replenish the supply.
Our Red Cross here runs several campaigns to get many to donate through out the year.

Hi there hardworkinggurl
I would have thought they would have wanted your blood more than ever as there must be others that have the same blood group as yourself and are in need of it. I know here in the UK those that have rare blood types are encouraged to give blood for that very reason.
Thanks for response

Friend, have you checked? Around here they Rh+ and Rh- blood. I do not know if it is a problem if you have had the shots though. Of course there are other things that prevent it, like having had malaria or spotted fever (my sister). Both of my kids have given and they are both Rh-

There are places that you can sell your blood, in bigger cities. Then there are places that only do plasma. I donate through the American Red Cross. They are very strict. Because of the type of blood I have, I give double units of red blood cells. I cannot give again until August 16. I am working on my fourth gallon, I think.

Here you have to wait a year after a piercing or a tattoo.

I used to donate blood when I was younger, but then something happened and some blood test kept telling them that I couldn't donate any more. Now that I have cancer and have lived out of the country, there are even more reasons they don't want my blood. Donations here are also voluntary. You can sell plasma, but not blood here. But they wouldn't even take that from me. Oh well...

I don't know if there is any such thing as "cured", but I do seem to be improving. I just wish there were a way to know without opening me up again. They only found it for sure when they were trying to fix another problem that wound up not getting fixed because they did find the cancer. Hopefully they will be able to fix that problem so that I can get back to normal.

Yes I do! I live in hungary, and like other countries, they also set restrictions. You aren't allowed to donate if you have: any kind of haematologic disease; leukemia and other bone marrow-related diseases; your immune system is severely weakened, you are anemic, and you are a carrier of HIV or Hepatitis C, although the last one will be screened only after you've given your 5dl of blood.
Didn't hear anything about selling blood, but I know, that elder people will get a little reward about 50$ after the tenth occasion. Usually, after the "drainage", I get a chocolate bar, with an orange juice, and finally a big, warm thank you, that gives me a lot of happines, making me feel important. :)

Hi there stephn and welcome to mylot
Well done you, that is great that you too give blood and it makes you feel good afterwards as it does me. I think that some parts of the US they buy blood from people but maybe it is only if they are in great need, I really don't know but am interested to find out.
Thanks for your response, happy mylotting and keep up the good work of giving blood

Hi humbug!
Good for you! I always envy people who can donate blood. I just think it's something a good Samaritan will do. I wish I can donate blood but I'm anemic so I can't. And also, those that have been transfused with blood before cannot donate. I have undergone blood transfusion when I was a kid so that's another reason why I cannot donate.
It's the same in our country. People donate blood and they are given snacks to replenish their blood. I haven't heard of people selling their blood, that's preposterous! I don't think it's a nice thing to do. But in the hospital, I think patients who need blood transfusion pays for the blood that the hospital gives them. If they don't have the money to pay for it, then can look for blood donors who will donate blood that can serve as replacement for the blood that will be transfused to the patient.
Cheers.

HI there secretbear
I think that in some countries they need to offer a payment for people's blood to ensure they have plenty, especially large countries. I am sure that here in the uk we donate so much blood that it doesn't even stay in this coutry and is given away else where but they still ask for more. They were saying the other day that there are very few 17-34 year olds donating blood but then does that really matter? As long as they are getting enough blood in the right blodd groups it doesn't matter who it is coming from as long as it is healthy blood!
Thanks for your response

No your not paid in Australia for donating blood but i almost think they should have some sort of incentive to encourage people to donate because I understand or bloodbank stocks are much lower than what is required. I think every should donate blood if and when they can to do their part to help another. It could be them that infact need the blood. I have been more and more interested in donating but due to health and tattoos etc there are a few condition before being accepted to donate, then i will give blood to save someones life.

Hi there dont_pick_your_nose
Yes health issues, tattoos and piercings will hold you back from donating blood for sure. I was surprised though that after having my recent tattoo I only have to wait 3 months before I can donate again which is great! I think that everyone should give blood if they can but there are some that are scared of needles, have health problems and of course tattoo and piercing issues.
thanks for your response

Thats good to hear, anyway donating blood has no loss after all, pure blood is replaced by it anyway from our body itself. but so far for me i hate hospitals and those needles and syringes am phobia to it all, i dont know why..so far i got no disease to go there to. i avoid hospitals at all cost, due to this fright i dont even visit someone who is hospitalized. donating is all good and that its for good purpose to those who are in need of it. keep it up.

Hi there Fireheart
I don't even go to a hospital to give blood it is done in our local church hall where it is all very friendly and they also put the local radio on so there is plenty there to distract people from what is going on. I used to take my son who used to sit beside me as good as gold and just draw or eat his lunch. You might find that you would be ok.
Thanks for your response

I have not donated blood at any given point. I do not see the reason I have to donate my blood. I have the feeling that I need more blood so why want to give away what I feel is not enough for me?
In Nigeria, where I live government and the health ministry both at the federal, state and local government level have been encourage many Nigerians and other foreigner that are resident in Nigeria to donate blood. But the campaign is not receiving much attention because most Nigerian see the culture as not too good for them. I have also spoken to person of the Jehovah witness faith in Nigeria and they tell me that their religion forbids the donation of blood. I do not know where they got that belief from but I think that is the acceptable practice by followers of the Jehovah Witness faith around the world.
So religious factors, cultural factors, and african traditions sometimes affects people belief when it comes to the donation of blood.

Hi there naija4real
Yes that is very true of certain religions, cultures and traditions but I feel that I am helping people and that is what is important to me. I cannot help people financially or with my time so this is a great way for me to do something. I am sure that the blood that is donated in the UK does not remain in the UK and is shipped out to other countries who are in more desperate need of it.
Many thanks for your response

No, I was not given the chance. I had my 4-months internship at Philippine National Red Cross and we were responsible for the blood extraction and laboratory tests. Before we do the extraction, a donor must pass first the lab tests for him to qualify as a donor. Yes, some people here sells their blood, but they are not exempted from the qualifying tests. After extraction, we do give them a card, just in case they will need blood or their relatives they can just surrender that card in exchange of the blood. Yes, we also give them some snacks after the extraction.

I don't know how they could do it. During my time we pay them P350.00 per 500cc. That's a big amount already. Those who are in need of blood very badly approach the donors for the blood and pay them. The price also depends on the type of blood they have.

I have never given blood, I am not permitted to do so because of health reasons, so I admire you for donating blood. It's not that I am scared of needles, I am not, I actually watch the needle go in when I have regular blood tests, after 40 years of needles you get used to it. I only get queasy when it comes to treating the eyes.

I have given blood regularly since I turned 18, but in recent years I have been unable to do as I am from Scotland, and anyone who lived in the UK prior to 1985 is now not allowed to give blood. The reason has to do with the whole mad cow thing that hit the UK a few years back. It's a rather odd ban to me as I am pretty sure any symptoms would be here now if I had contracted it. I had my 25 pin, go that in Canada during my time there.

Hey there inked4life
As they take extra blood seperate to the actual donation you would think they would test it for anything using that wouldn't you but then I suppose that would be time consuming if they had to test everybody's. I agree that it is an odd ban though.
Cheers for your response

I appreciate your generosity. In my entire existence, I haven't tried donating blood. And there are a lot of reasons why, first, I am afraid of needle; second; I might faint when I see a blood. I can be strong in other aspects but when it comes to things like that, I am afraid. But I do not know yet if I can when the need arises.

Hi there maharlikah
You don't have to look at all, you feel a little scratch when the needle goes in and then you feel no more. You can look away when the blood is being taken and actually it is quite hard to see it anyway because you are lying down. I do hope you find the courage to do it one day and I am sure that when you do you will wonder what you were worried about haha
Thanks for your response

i dont donate yet but i want to. in my country i think that we also eat and drink something after donate it. so we can recover energies^^ but about being paid i dont think someone asks for payment. is like you volunteer to help others only. i should go and donate also while im healthy. sometimes is really hard for others to find a donor mostly if their blood is rare so would be great if we all healthy people could^^ i guess i can donate but still they always can test first^^ so that way i will be sure if i can donate or not.

Hi there sweetloveforeve
They will test your blood first for iron level because if it is low you cannot donate. Then they will take several other test tubes of your blood before filling the bag so that can be used for testing for other things. I do hope you will donate soon!
