I watched the movie earlier on 3D. I am amazed and I can say the money was all worth it. I have plans on buying the DVD soon when it's released.
When someone mentions Mermaids - the first set of thoughts that would come in my mind are: upper half body of human he or she, voice is hypnotizing and beautiful creatures.
From little mermaid to TV shows like h20 or movies like Aquamarine and a Tom hanks films where he fell in love with a mermaid.
I was surprised to see the mermaids in the movie Pirates. They are beautiful creatures indeed. Beautiful voice but with fangs? I was so shocked and had a hard time going through the film because they're suppose to "nice" and yet in the film - they kill humans.
Bear with me friends. I still can't get over with their twist of their mermaid versions.
If you have seen it, please share your thoughts and reviews. And for those who haven't - it's really a good film plus the humor is well delivered by actors Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. They are the highlights in the film. And yes...the mermaids, too.

yes, I am so excited to see this movie- Id' rather wait for the dvd release though, so I can watch it over and over again. Mermaids are really dark creatures though, but I didn't know about the fangs. They are beautiful women with hypnotizing voices, which they use on sailors who lose control of their ship or jump in the sea to the mermaids- in short they die.

Mermaids and mermen in mythology are not nice at all. They were feared by sailors and fishermen and people who lived by the sea. The "nice" mermaids you are thinking of are mostly watered-down, bowdlerised versions of the old stories, re-written for 19th Century children. I haven't see POTC, so I can't comment on the portrayal of mermaids there but they sound more like the real thing to me.

Hi, owlwings. You and Galena are on the same page here and as much as I'd like to protect my concept of mermaids but mythology says it all.
POTC did served as the almost best interpretation of what a mermaid is like. Thank you for your response.

This is new to you guys?! I saw "Sea Creature" and other films where mermaids have fangs and in actual mermaid lore, mermaids are not friendly, they are mostly evil. They are Sirens. They lure men to their deaths. They look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside, they will kill you if you are careful. Never trust someone that looks that beautiful.

My parents used to read me all kinds stories about mermaids when I was a child, and I used to watch films about them, they were said to be the sirens of the sea, the creatures that lured men to their deaths. Some people thought they could be friendly, many thought that they were just plain evil. Half-human and half-fish creature, do you seriously think something like that would be friendly? Even Centaurs have the tendency of being vicious.

LOL. Bear with me rogue. It seems that my "image" of the ideal mermaid has been stuck with Ariel of the Little Mermaid and Aquamarine.
After watching Pirates - I was still overwhelmed with the fact that they are "supposed" to be like that and never "nice".
And I love your last sentence, "Never trust someone that looks that beautiful" - can be applied to many occasions.

Yes the mermaids sizzle! They are beautiful , young and dangerous too , hehehhe. I just don't get if if anyone doesn't enjoy it , then they need to chill and loosen up a bit and not be too critical and psychotic about everything and anything. Pirates of The Caribbean 4 is just so cool! Damn awesome ........I think if the critics can sit and direct the movie , it'll be worst off. I mean , this time round the Director wants to focus on Johnny Depp's character , so that's why we keep seeing Sparrow with his antics.
The mermaid scene is classic and amazing like you've said. I intend to buy the DVD too once it's out. One can appreciate a good movie when one sees one. Anyway , it's up to them opinions if they want to think lowly of this movie , then it's just their loss. For me , I have my movie life to lead and I think Pirates of the Caribbean rules to the max.

I remember my cousin telling while we watch the scene where Tamara, the first mermaid to appear on the movie looks so innocent - he said, "Wow... She's so beautiful." and the next thing, he shouted, "WAAAAA! PIRANHA!!!". When she finally showed her fangs. It was so funny but I wasn't able to relate it coz I was more than suprised by him.
I can't wait for the next film? Where you able to watch until the end of credits? Because there was still one scene left there.

I have not watched the movie yet, but i know there are mermaids in it. It's said in the reviews, movie goers are sick of "captain jack sparrow", and the introduction of mermaids into the franchise is something fresh. However it's not mentioned that those mermaids kill? I can't imagine that when mermaids are supposed to be gentle, beautiful and graceful. I will skip the movie.

I saw this movie too! Yeah it was a really good movie, and the mermaids were a bit scary! I thought it was a big twist on what I've seen of mermaids / heard of mermaids in movies / shows / anything from the past. It definitely gives the Pirates movie series it's own special kick and makes me think what more will we find in those Pirates seas?

Dont forget mermaids have always been "the sea mans bane" so having extreme beauty and melodic songs is all there, but the fangs bit may or may not be real especially because they are meant to attract sailors and you never hear from them again.
I really want to watch POTC 4 :( But I only have so much money. Oh well, just gna have to wait for the DVD lol!

Now I am curious. Do you feel the 3D effects? I mean, does it feel like a sword is so closed to you, or some one is going to punch you? Do you know what I mean?

I saw the movie yesterday, and I reacted the same way as you did: The mermaids were not at all what I had thought of mermaids previously. But I quite liked the movie, people had told me before that it wasn't that good so I was pretty pleasantly surprised :)

All I can say is that Ariel and Aquamarine are still my best mermaids.

Interesting twist on the mermaids. . .merpeople weren't all that nice in Harry Potter, either, although they didn't have fangs. Maybe there are vampire mermaids just like vampire humans! I am glad to hear you liked the movie--I want to see it but it hasn't gotten such great reviews. . .

That made me shocked because they really have fangs and they hiss and I was like... WTF in side the movie theater. LOL.
But it's near realistic version compare to Ariel of Little Mermaid (Disney).
Just wait for the DVD. Maybe it'll come out real soon.

Wow I never seen a mermaid in my entire life. But hearing a mermaid with fangs is really intriguing. I never though that Pirates of the Carribean will be a good movie. I might try to watching it on my day off and have money on the day that I am off.
